Can anybody give me some possible reasons....

Neighbours of mine had a row of Sycamores (35ft) growing along a raised embankment behind his house. They were a mess...

Tall & skinny, swamped with ivy, full of hanging deadwood & broken limbs etc...

No evidence of any fungal or bacterial issues. But the site is far from perfect for such substantial trees.

Anyway...they were pretty dire, not to mention the gardens either side were suffering with minimal light penetration...so they asked me to reduce them all and remove the ivy.

Initially they were wanting a crazy reduction (about 70%!!!!!) but after a bit of negotiation we settled with about 30%....

All the trees are doing well except one & I just can't figure out why?

I'm told it was in full leaf last year & can't see any reason visually?

Its just really bugging me as I have never had a tree suffer soon after I've worked on it, even when forced to do a severe reduction...especially on Sycamore & Ash.

Oh - the trees were reduced in March - not ideal time of year but they wanted it done.

SOLO 637...bags of power and never skips a beat.

Sorry to break up the chat that has hijacked my thread (only joking lads)!!!

But stripped the saw, did a bit of cleaning and examining and I'm positive its the little circlip that jingling around...all else seems sound.

Have to say it again...its a bloody cracking little saw!!!!

Ok cheers for your thoughts...very much appreciated and some handy info...although after a bit of research, I must say the new 365 x torq does look a nice saw and at £500 I might have to see if I can stretch to it.

Can this be done on a 2004 365 special then?

No, not VAT reg so just happy to go for a good S/H one at the moment. To be fair I have bought a few used saws and they have been very very good.

Cheers guys...going to stick with the Husky then. They have never let me down anyway.

Tell me this though...the Husky is actually almost ten years old. Seems in great condition, but is £300 a bit steep for a ten year old saw????

I bought it from you if you remember? It actually didnt do it on me until a few weeks ago.

As I say, saws faultless apart from that...my best buy yet!

Apart from this, its a stonking saw. I reccomend it to anybody looking for a climbing saw at reasonable money!

Ok, so I am in need of a bigger ground saw, not only for doing some work but for ringing up bigger stuff for firewood at home.

I have the option to buy a Husky 365 Special (about 7 years old) or a Stihl MS390 (about 4 years old). Both around £300 and in very good nick...which is the better saw? I am just as interested in reliability as I am performance.

I have only experience of Husky 346xps and 365's as ground saws. Always quite liked the 365's...seemed to be hassle free.

Hopefully somebody with more experience using the various saws can help?

Have to make the right choice as can't afford not to so your advice is appreciated.

Guys anybody know what causes the 'tinny' 'rattly' sound when a saws ticking over?

I've had it occur on my work saws (mainly 346xp's) but now its happening with my own top handle and can't figure out what it is...saw is working great apart from this?

Dissapears when revved (or I just dont hear it) but is quite apparent when idling.

PS-why aren't there more of these SOLO top handles about? I bought this one s/h on here as my first 'own' top handle...and I much prefer it to the 200's I use at work. It is much much more reliable, munches through the bigger stuff with less effort, goes and goes all day long and I haven't broken a single component on it yet (forever replacing chainbrake handles on 200's). Only downside is there seem to be no suppliers of parts locally (NI). Apart from this its a light, well balanced and ultra reliable little saw.

Anyway, any advice appreciated regards technical issue.

Oh no...the saw looks in great shape to me & I'm really happy with my choice. Been doing my homework & I'm told Solo are excellent to deal with direct & people are ordering parts direct from them without hassle...just referring to the fact I dont have any stockists nearby.

Ive been offered it for 20 quid. Didnt expect it to be much use to me but wondered if it was worth having...maybe just for emergencies etc. Its the first I've seen and I'm intrigued with magnesium casing...heavy but feels really tight and solid wee thing.

Did a deal with burrel on his Solo...parts will be tight to get in a hurry but its getting good feedback, especially in the states (googling like a maniac!). And managed to find one being compared to an 09 ms200T and there didnt appear to be any difference in cutting speed on 8(ish) inch logs...and it appears to be quite a wee looker with a good shape. And the Germans usually arent too bad in the design department & build quality so its got to be decent...heres hoping anyway!!!

ive had 335xpts and 338xpts (gutless)

I know somebody (non arborist) who bought that 79 quid ebay saw...although he paid £120 from some supplier on Gumtree!!! I had a quick play with it...my kids toy stihl could do a better days work. Its a serious no no for anything other than light tinkering in the garden a fews days each year.

Just wanted to warn anybody considering one.

So is this Solo jobbie a better bet than a cheap Husky 335 then? The only thing Im worried about is parts...they seem thin on the ground after some calls a'nd googling. At least the Huskys seem ok for sourcing parts, even if some are SH?

To be honest I was thinking about considering a well used 200 but to be honest Ive owned a few at work and always found that after a few years use they became a little tempermental...and they are fetching crazy prices. I have to say I liked the design of the Huskys & do think the new 201 looks neat so was aiming towards a cheap but decent top handle for now and maybe investing in the new 201 in the future.

Not an option at all but cheers for suggestion.

Are those wee solo saws any good? I need a enough power to be able to cut some heavier stuff whilst in the air.

Are they no good then? I was told they werent too bad & hoped they would be a good option until I could afford a sthil?
