  1. Hi everyone sorry I have not been around for a few months, I have been planning a new business.

It involves Health, Education and Rural wood crafts all in one place.

It is going to be funded entirely by public donations and will be open and available to all members of the public as well as school parties and referrals from Health authorities.

I have the backing from The Royal British Legion who are giving me business skill training. Local councillors and a National wildlife trust so far.

I am in discussions with a promising venue and have just started to raise funds through various sources.

I Have so far Recorded an Album in my living room with help from my 8 year old daughter on a track and is for sale if you follow the link Here.

My crowdfunding sites are Here and Here.

I will be eventually putting on small exhibitions and demonstrations of all Wood related crafts and businesses and Tree surgery and Chainsaw carving will be a big feature of all I do.

I hope you all like my project and if any of you can offer any support in any way I would love to hear from you.

  2. Hi folks.

Im looking to source some ready cut slices of light wood trunks about an inch to inch and a half thick for pyrograph practice.

About a dozen if I can get them.

The type they use for house signs and plaques etc.

With the bark on preferably and if I am very lucky seasoned too.

I dont have an awful lot of funds to play with being on benefits.

Can collect if it is fairly local to me Beds, Bucks or Herts.

  3. My friend has about a dozen + Mahogany planks to give away FREE to anyone who can collect them. Perfect for plate turning and tons of other projects.

They are about 3 meters long about 9 inches wide and varying depths between an inch and inch and three quarters.

If anyone is interested his phone numbers is 07791000867, His name is Chris.

Just tell him you got his number from me. Steve Hill..

In the time i have been able to be creative with woods that were otherwise going to be incinerated or slung in the skip i really hope i have been able to make a tiny difference.

I also have a facebook page that tells a little more about me and brings you more up to date with my work and how it came about.

  9. Looks excellent.:thumbup1:

Is the finish on the pestle just from sanding or have you done something else to it?

Both Mortar and Pestle were sanded down to an 800 grit paper then treated with Olive Oil ( Tesco's Own ). I have not put any solvents on them due to the fact they will be used for food preparation.

  10. 2 years ago i won a grant to do some training with the Association of woodturners of Great Britain but never got to do the course cos of my health problems after my marriage ended.

The powers that be now that are helping me find a new career couldnt really justify the course this time round because the chances of a full time job after the course is pretty low so i am spending the next week Training to operate a 360 Excavator instead.

Its not obviously my first choice but it will get me earning again if i pass.

Woodturning will have to be just a hobby for me but given half a chance i would turn for my living anyday.

The two years i spent not turning felt like a punnishment i wouldnt deal out to anyone.

  11. I found a nice piece of Beech lying around in my shed for the Pestle, i Think it was an old Table leg or something.

Anyway i have waited for my mum to come round so i can measure it up to the size of her hand so it is comfortable for her to use and fits nice.

Here are two views of the finished Pair now i think the contrast between light and slightly darker wood is quite nice. What do you think ??

Here i have just turned the piece and mounted it onto the chuck now, you can see were thr back plate was.

    Photo016.jpg

Here it has been hollowed out and lightly sanded

    The finished piece.

Hopefully i will get on with the Pestle tomorrow.

  13. Well ive got a piece of Elm that i have roughed down this afternoon, It got some imperfections but it doesnt matter cos i will make them an asset if i can.

Heres a couple of Views of what ive done so far.

You can see here the first basic shape, Its going to be quite bulky by the looks of it.

Here you can get the very first idea on how it is going to look when its polished.
