I also have broken 2 other wrist bones but don't think they are too serious, think scaphoid is the main one. Is does hurt a lot at the moment, going to get done good physio after it settles down a bit. Don't want to rush it, but want to get climbing ASAP, oh well these things happen, didn't think it would be such a awkward little bone to break, but cheers for all your replies!

Thanks for all the response bit of reassurance as people say they can be awkward to heal etc, I have had it pinned, I also dislocated my wrist but that's back in now

Ha yes I also did it in a bike had a motocross accident got spat off mid air, think bike has come off worse though haha

They have said 6 weeks which I kind of expected, although I want it to be right, just happy to know that it won't effect my climbing in the future

Hi there, I had a little accident yesterday and have fractured my scaphoid, also got some ligament damage. Has anyone had a similar injury? Does it affect your climbing? Just wanted to know how long I would be looking at recovering from this.

got sorted out with the tree climbers guide 3rd edition now, so will be busy reading that now. I will have a look at the books and sites mentioned.

Just after buying a few books that would be handy, i have got my cs 38 and 39 coming up in april, and have just done my cs 30/31. I just want a head start and to gain some knowledge that will help me on my course and afterwards.

my advice

 

get a GOOD accountant, NOT someone you know.

 

I save every reciept i get, for everything i buy, put em all in a folder for the relevant month, every quarter pass them to my accountant, who tells me which i can, and which i can't put through the books.

 

the little bit he charges me is easily offset by the ammount he saves me.

 

cashflow'll be your hardest issue

I will take your advice, seems sensible to get someone who knows what they are doing.

Im not fully decided yet, although its something im deffinatly considering, after speaking to local firms they haven't got the work to take someone on full time.

It would probably be spraying etc, and could also pick up abit of work from where im at now to fall back on.

Just keeping my options open, whilst trying to fund futher training.

Just had my assessment today, all went really well. Was worried for some

Reason but I don't know why. All the nptc assessors seem to make you at ease and get the best out of you! I loved everyminute of this week!

Considering going self employed as a subbie, as i have come across a good opportunity.

However, I can't get my head around self emplyed tax, and expenses etc.

My main curiosity is that travel expenses. It says 45pence per mille for the first 10,000 miles and 25 there after or a fixed rate, think its 60%. Now I would be doing around 100 miles per day travelling to and from the place of work. Would I be able to claim 45p per mile on this? Would work out at £45 a day, seems like an awful lot to say i would only be using £20 worth of fuel? I would run a small van (VW Caddy) therefore fuel wouldn't be much.

If this is correct then it would help me out so much. Also could I claim for PPE for example chainsaw trousers, boots etc? and also could I get anything for training? obviously work related?

Are there any more perks. Just after some advice and more clear info.

To be honest I would rather go work full time for a local tree surgeon i know on min wage the. Atleast it's a guaranteed income, but he said he hasn't got he work on ATM to pay and extra wage, fair emough I guess.

Thanks for the replies! Yes it does seem very competitive and hard going out there. How's work in your areas? Where I am (York) I have rung every tree surgeon in the yellow pages and most of them say, no sorry we have been laying a few people off. A small minority say I will take your details, however this is probably just politeness above anything and I will be surprised if i here anything from them. The majority of the work on here does seem to Be in the south though?

So would you risk it or not? I haven't got much to loose, place where I'm at now is appalling to work for, I hate it if I'm honest, I think if it doesnt work out then the stuff I will have invested in won't go to waste anyway. I'm only young 20, and no commitments etc

Just a few questions for you all that I'm hoping you can give me some advice from. First of all, how competitive is it out there going self employed for

Subbying for other companies? Would I stand much chance of making a basic wage? I ask this having little to no experience with a saw? I'm working landscaping at the moment, i have got experience stumpgrinding, and with chippers etc, have also got spraying tickets.

I am doing my cs 30 and 31 in a few weeks then I'm hoping to be getting cs 38 in the summer.

I am also quite flexible with what I do, don't mind doing a bit of hedge cutting, strimming, spraying etc

I will have my own van, ppe, saws, strimmers, k/s, everything. I should add I

Happily work away, will travel anywhere. One final question is what would you be looking a for a day rate for me, say with cs 30 31 and 38?

Oh and I'm in the Yorkshire region.

As above, looking for any work in the york or surrouding areas, selby, castleford, hull etc.

Have previous experience pruning, chipping and stumpgrinding. In a few weeks i will be doing my cs 30 & 31.

Hard working, reliable, good time keeper, and very willing. Can also work weekends.

cheers for the help and advice everyone. Yeh, i think that would be the safest option making enquiries before. Its one thing getting a job but actually getting one you want and enjoy doing is a totally different thing. I wouldnt want to throw myself at the deepend doing work i wasnt confident with or out of of my ability but. To be honest i would be happy just going as a groundie just to get feel for things, then see how things turned out. Going to do some more enquiring have a browse around some other forums anyway, cheers!

Do most people just go out there on a working visa with nothing and get work off there own back, or have something in place?
