Riggerbear: I live about 5 mins south of Birmingham. I am not sure what soil type it is. The ground doesn't seem too sticky.
eggsarascal: Yes it is a manhole cover (good spot!!) There are also manhole covers just out of view on the left.
If I was to get rid- can I just chop it down? Would the balk need removing too or would the roots die once the tree is cut down?
thanks again.

Evening all,
I moved into my home just over a year ago. Outside the front is a beautiful weeping willow which I love. When asking my neighbour if he wanted me to cut back the overhanging branches on his side he declined but pointed out that I may need to look into getting professional advice about it as the roots can interfere with house foundations and drains.
I have done some basic research on the web and it appears as though weeping willows are known for their aggressive roots system. I have posted three pictures and was hoping that someone on here might be able to have a look at give some advice or opinions.
In worse case scenario and I have to cut down the tree. Is it small enough to just cut it down with a saw? Do I have to destroy the balk too? I have never cut back a tree let alone cut one down. The tree isn't too big and I think quite young so it doesn't look too daunting.
Thanks for all your help!

There is a fair bit of weight but not so much that it appears in any way under pressure. Its has now all dried up and doesn't look as bad. Should i be treating the damage with insecticide or anything else?
thanks for all your advice.

Hi All,
I was hoping to get some advice. I was told last year when having my cherry blossom cut back that the horse shoe that the previous owners had put around one of the branches was now severley cutting into the tree and could one day kill off the tree or at leats kill off that branch. This morning, I set about getting the horse shoe out as I love the tree and it would look terirble if this branch had to be removed.
After hacking at it and finally getting the horse shoe off, I now fear that I may have been a bit too hasty. I have uploaded pictures of the tree and the damage. A good part pf the bark has been removed- is this likely to bring on disease? Also- with this chunk missing, will the tree need strengthening?
I know nothing about trees and in hindsight probably should have left it....
any help would be appreciated.

Thanks for all the advice and helpful comments. I successfully removed it this morning with little effort required. Going to look for a less vicious replacement as the front looks a little bear now!
