  1. As per the title.
Im no longer in the Arb arena and back in construction so some advice would help.

I’ve got to cut and scarf several good sized oak purlins from an oak framed building and cutting them with my chainsaw would be significantly easier than any other tool ( circular saws etc) on my truck.
My question is would you just use a standard chain on my old Makita saw as I have got a couple new of chains still in the box, or would you buy a hardend / carbide / toughened type chain.
Don’t mind ‘investing’ in a specialist chain if that’s what needed or would you just use a standard chain and accept that it will dull quickly. No danger of nails just very hard seasoned oak.
    Thoughts?

I’ve got a brand new never used Dolmar (Makita) PS 420, supplied to me by Shavey of this parrish a few years back. Never even had fuel in it.
Still in the box red plastic tough carry case with two new Dolmar bars and two new chains. Got is as a replacement saw for an old knackered husky but then chained jobs.
Can be had for very reasonable money.

Should have said, it’s the SC version and has unused 15” and 18” bars.

  5. As per the title.
Looking for transit tipper size loads of unprocessed green timber / arb waste for me to cut, split stack for future firewood.
Not looking for charity, cash paid.
Used to generate my own but change in circumstances mean I need to source firewood for my own use ( not for resale ). I use between 4 to 5 cube per year.

Located between Chelmsford and Dunmow, Essex.
Maybe after the storms you professionals may have an excess of unprocessed trees to move on. Don’t mind what species, conifer etc, just not willow or other poor firewoods. Good access, can be tipped.
    Cash waiting.
Hope this is posted in the right section. Moderator please move it if not.
    Many thanks.

Should have said it's got a 14" bar on it at the mo and a new (ish) chain.

I'll post some pictures if anyone's interested?

  8. So...it's been a week. TPP axed. Muslim ban a-gogo. "Negotiations" with Mexico underway. Abortion Industry hammered. Sanctuary Cities capitulating...climate change off the menue...Obamacare on the way out. All in one week.

    Enjoying your Schadenfreude?

Hmmm you seem to be celebrating that climate change or basic healthcare are not important.

    WOW !

  9. Why don't you consult your crystal ball to see how long "right wing populist politics" lasts? I predict it will last a long time as Westerners are getting fed up with politicians that don't listen to them.

Seems to me that the electorate has a short memory for recent modern history.

The "right wing populist politics'' were the politics of the first half of the 20th century. Look where that got us (two world wars) !!!

The politics of nationalism and a culture of blaming everyone else (bar ourselves) for our own economic woe's has been seen before and always leads to conflict of one sort or another. A lurch to the right in France, Holland, USA and to a degree here in the UK is bad news for everyone.

Just for the record I'm not some sort of bleeding heart liberal.

IMO. Trump is already showing his true colours by telling bare face lies around the size of the attendance at his inauguration contrary to the photographic evidence, seems to me that he's laying down a marker to the press and his electorate. I.e. His version of events is the only version to be believed !!!

Seems like Donald Trump is behaving like Vladimir Putin!

    Just my take on it.

  10. Got a plague of moles last year and had some success with gassing them.

I removed the exhaust for my motor mower and rigged up a bit of copper pipe from the engine into the mole runs. Then ran the mower for 20 minutes with the exhaust gasses pipe into the tunnels. Had some old 50:1 petrol and 2 stroke mix so ran the mower on that just to give it a bit more fug !

Did the trick for a while, though there back again:001_huh:

  11. Oxalic acid ( think that's correct) is good for getting these small stains out of oak, not a chance on that though.

Oxalic acid will get that stain out.

It looks like sugar, dissolve it in hot water and paint it on whilst still hot (ish) repeat 2 or 3 times and give it a scrub with the paint brush in between coats. Then rinse it off or jet wash it.

It will go a light straw colour and continue to lighten over the next 24 hours as the wood drys.

Then give it a coat of wax (fiddes).

This will work, did my whole oak framed house like this.

  12. Could use 'spirt of salts'. You get it from traditional ironmongers / hardware shops. It's a very strong acid so be careful and it's very cheap (£4) a bottle.

If you are worried about the surface you could take it to a CO2 / dry ice (carbon dioxide blaster's. Safe to use but might cost a few shillings.

  13. The real division in Britain is not between London and the north, Scotland and Wales or the old and young, but between Johnson, Gove and Farage and the voters they defrauded. What tale will serve them now? On Thursday, they won by promising cuts in immigration. On Friday, Johnson and the Eurosceptic ideologue Dan Hannan said that in all probability the number of foreigners coming here won’t fall. On Thursday, they promised the economy would boom. By Friday, the pound was at a 30-year low and Daily Mail readers holidaying abroad were learning not to believe what they read in the papers. On Thursday, they promised £350m extra a week for the NHS. On Friday, it turns out there are “no guarantees” and Farage admitted on live TV that this was not true.

If we could only find a halfway competent opposition, the very populist forces they have exploited and misled so grievously would turn on them. The fear in their eyes shows that they know it.

Re the above. Not my words but those I've read but it hit home with me, sorry I know I'm not with the majority but I think we have been sold a pipe dream on brexit, people have been very naive if think this is anything other than political opportunism by Johnson, Gove and Farage.

    Just my take on it.
