  1. Whether this is relevant or not, you decide!

Many years ago, I had a pair of trousers that were the highest level of protection at the time (early 1990's) The arse had ripped out of them but the legs were complete so we decided to see just what they would stand up to. We stuff a log down each trouser leg of a diameter roughly that of a leg.

First test, a Stihl ms200. Dropping it onto the leg from full throttle with the trigger released, it bit into the trouser and stopped dead without going through.

Done again but with the throttle held on full, it again stopped but not until it had lightly broken through the inner lining, probably would have ended up with a few stitches in the leg.

Finally we tested it with a Husqvarna 262XP on full throttle, it didn't even slow down.

My personal view is this: whatever level of protection the trousers offer, work as though you're wearing shorts!

  2. I'm looking to buy a 14-18ft dory to do some sea fishing with. Ideally this size due to being able to be tow rather than store at a marina. Just wondered if anyone owned any boat and could give me some pointers on the requirements ie insurance, operator ticket etc

    Thanks

I own a 2.8 metre SIB (basically, a RIB with a sectional Aluminium floor and an inflatable V-keel) and power it with a Parsun 9.8hp 4 stroke. I chose this because I can easily launch and retrieve it single handedly. If you plan to fish on your own, bear this in mind. There's nothing worse than planning a days fishing with a friend who will help you launch a heavier boat to be let down on the morning!

On the safety side, you could do an RYA powerboat course. It is imperative though that you do take the one day radio operators course and carry at least a hand held VHF. Personally, I never leave shore without a lifejacket, no matter how calm. I have a PLB attached in case I fall overboard and cannot get back in the boat. I also carry a set of Inshore flares too, you can't be too careful out there!

Whatever you choose, I'm sure you'll love it!

  3. My wife has an allergy to them and usually the bites become infected needing a trip to the GP for antibiotics. On the doctors recommendation, she now takes a daily anti-histamine tablet during horsefly season and applies insect bite cream straight away. She's had several bites with no ill effects now in the last two years!

  4. I cant seem to switch off, even when im not at work im still looking up at trees, looking at how id climb them, where id anchor in,how id get to the end of a limb etc.

Even just tryin to id species im not sure of...

I even jibber away to the wife if were out walking the dog,she rolls here eyes, glazes over and goes into the nodding head and sayin yeah honey symdrome.

Anyone else do this or am i obsessed/mental...?

No, you're not mental, you're a tree surgeon! I stopped climbing 10 years ago and still do this every day!

Unless of course we're both mental.......

  5. I am after a chipper have been for a while.

want a tw125 but not been able to find anything and when I do its already gone.

Just come across a entec cs18hp 1999 can anyone give me hints what to look for if I have a look at it quite a bit of money for the year [i think]

unless anyone has a tw125 they may be thinking about selling in the near future.

wanting tw125 as don't have much room where I am and can get this round my back garden and have used them and think there a great little chipper.

I have just taken in a trade in Greenmech Arborist 130 on Friday with only 100 hours on the clock. It has a 23hp V-twin B&S petrol engine, a 6" x 9" throat and is fully braked. £7500 + vat. Give me a call if you're interested! 07774 282488, Julian

  6. I'm seriously looking for an 8 tonne forestry winch. Liked the spec on paper ,and the build weight and rope capacity of Kdg winches. The discounted price from the Uk distibuter of a ful spec 8T with remote control, unwinder etc is £5975 +vat

Searching on google, same spec, in Germany is advertised for 7300Eur including VAT at 20%

which equates to £4500 + vat

now that is a big difference, if it cost another £500 to transport it to the uk? Is this another case of RIP off Britain? or the importer being greedy? What would other people do? TIA John

This is usually due to the exchange rate. Although the exchange rate is flexible, export/import prices are set in advance in most cases with either the buyer or supplier absorbing the changing rate, depending on which way the change flows. On top of this, the cost of shipping has to be added.

  7. Many years ago I was working for a mature male gay couple on a very wet, cold winter day. My young blond groundie was looking particularly drowned and miserable when they approached him, felt his damp clothing (focusing on his bicep area), fussed around him a little and insisted he went in the house with them so they could "Get something hot inside you"....... It's amazing how quickly he warmed up as he got on with his work at double speed!

  8. Hi Adam,

Having been in a very similar situation to you I know how hard a decision this is to make. For me, it proved to be the best decision ever. I was fortunate to move into arboricultural sales so was able to stay wthin an industry I love. The real bonus was around six months into the new job I actually woke up one morning with no pain whatsoever, just proving really how physically demanding this industry is on your body.

Whatever you choose to do or which path fate takes you down I wish you all the best for your future.

  9. I have but don't want to be in loads of debt. I want to start off second hand and when work progresses then may be go down the finance route.

    Thanks Pete.

Although you don't want to get into loads of debt, I frequently see people purchase a sub £5K chipper and end up facing huge costs in repairs and on-going maintenance. Ask yourself this: Why are they selling? Quite often (but not every time) you end up buying someone else's problems.

Just as an example, a new machine with a £5K deposit could cost you as little as £25 per week..............

  10. I've sold plenty of it many years ago for mulch. It's best left to decompose for 4 to 6 months first otherwise it tends to leach the nitrogen out the soil (it will however release it back again as it breaks down) Put it on the beds following weeding at a depth of around 3 inches.

We used to sell it loose with a minimum delivered load of 2 cubic metres for £85 + vat and £14 + vat for each additional cubic metre........ great work on a wet day!
