  1. The fact the question is being asked means your out of your comfort zone so if I were you I would put a proficient climber on the job . Work with them and learn.

    Bob

    Disagree totally.

Your asking your peers. That does not mean you are incapable, It means you are giving full and careful consideration to a complicated scenario.

Most of us have dealt with complicated scenarios and ones that would never come up on a climbing course. You are doing the right thing by asking.

Go into it sure but always with the edge of caution and willing to change your mind if the situation merits a change.

    Be confident and sure.

    Best of luck.

You will feel on top of the world when you nail it.

  2. It is true that round wood lasts and burns longer than shown grain.

What you look at as a 2 inch round wood log last for as long as a piece showing a 2 inch split faces at right angles. The grain shown is greater but the heat output will always be with the larger piece (mass).

The heat is in the wood, the amount of time of the output differs.

The 2 split sides will burn quicker throwing heat into the room quicker even though the round wood may still be burning.

  3. I have a load of Elm 8x4" various lengths for sale ASAP

At least 5 cubic metres, maybe more.

    Originally cut for Fire Surrounds.

    Best offers would get it.

They were cut 2 years ago and have been dry stored with good air flow.

I have moved to France but the timber is located near Forres, Moray.

My father is in Scotland (doesn't know info about the timber) and can arrange viewing/collection

    His number is 07544666201.

  4. I saw this scrawling through some french felling clips. You need to wait till he's finished his back cuts. Liked the way he put in his gob cuts. slightly different to how i was taught. takes experience to know that you've got it spot on from one side. Think it is time to try that method. Practice makes perfect. anyways enjoy the vid.

PS shout out to Euan Doig, Melvin, John the Chipper King, Kevin Holt, John Mckail Steven Mcfarlane and Jeremy Thornhill,

  5. Just reading up on setting up our business, under the Ltd company section on the gouverment website it reads the following........

*Must have at least one director (two if it's a plc) who may also be shareholders. Directors must be at least 16 years of age. At least one director must be a person.

So I cannot make my 10 week old pup a director then as hes not old enough!!

I got really bogged down into what the "person" means and laws surrounding the "person" and how relevant it was to the human being.

    Blacks law dictionary 1st Edition

PERSON. A man according to the rank he holds in society, with all the rights to which he holds the place entitles him, and the duties which it imposes. A human being considered being capable of having rights and being charged with duties, while a "thing" is the object over which rights may be exercised. Persons are divided by law into natural and artificial. Natural persons are such as the God of nature formed us; artificial are such as are created by human laws, for the purpose of society and government, which are called "corporations" or "bodies politic".

Deep but once you get involved it gets really interesting.

  6. i think the delivery would kill the price. You can collect the nets for 1.20 each or i could meet you part of the way.

i am based just outside of durham in the northeast so its a fair old distance.

I can keep it in mind as we sometimes travel down to England and in some circumstances we travel back up light so there could be possibilities for a meet up. At least it's not south as that would totally kill off the idea. :thumbup1:

  7. Wedidn't get taught the recovery position on our training course and when it came to the test i had to rescue the assesor as an unconcious casualty. I climbed up and brought him down safely and shouted to the groundsman to support his back when he came down with me. Not knowing i assumed that was it over but the assesor remained "unconcious" (fortunately having done my lifeguard certificate i had done the recvovery position) i proceeded to put him in the recovery position thinking that would be what i would logically do in the circumstances. He opened his eyes and climbed to his feet scraping all the leaves and twigs off his back and said "the jacket, you forgot the jacket", i was however happy that i did at least get him in the recovery position he then turned to talk to the then groundie who was doing a rescue next and he had a big turd on the side of his helmet, i didn't have the guts to tell him but fortunately the groundie did. Both myself and the other candidate struggled not to piss ourselves laughing but did so because we didn't want to put the assesors back up.

My advice is remember the jacket just in case of turds.

  8. garages want to buy a net for a quid and sell for 5 quid.set your price and stick to it.sorry for the stick pun

Well, I have been fortunate with the first Garage that was needing firewood because they are more like a family run business than an oversized shell garage or the like. They seem to understand that it is a time consuming operation. I have done my maths and I don't want to sell them for less than £3.00/bag to the garages - does that seem unreasonable, I know they are sold on for £5.00/bag. I have profited from the lack of competitors being able to get there supplies out over the cold spell. I want to keep up momentum and also make my deals attractive.

  9. buy the kindling on a wholesale basis. itsvery slow and labour intensive producing kinlding by hand. you will probably struggle to cover your labour costs.

i sell kindling on a wholesale basis in 40 x 50 nets from £1.20 per net

Do you have min buy quantity for that price and any ideas on postage to Morayshire north of Scotland? That seems like a decent buy if the courier costs don't max it up too much.

  10. Hey Folks,

I've expanded over to supplying garages and one of the ones I sell to has requested I supply Kindling. The concept is simple ans straight forward enough and I have a couple of lads who work for me that have been attacking the softwood stack but I am wondering if you guys have learnt any good tips that you're willing to share? What prices do you sell bags to garages/public for? With out the use of a machine how many approx bags do you manage in an hour? All info greatly appreciated. :thumbup1:

  11. Yeah i have noticed that they are also trying to sell chippers. I put a post up on here which was removed by the mods. I highlighted two different chippers in different areas but that had the same prices and 0 feedback. I contacted the sellers and their email replies were exactly the same. They tend to put please send correspondance to address (at) yahoo.com. or likewise. Needless to say the items were removed and the accounts were cancelled.

I know of one other chipper that has just been removed which is the same scenario.

    Beware of chippers too.

  12. heres a picture rupe, camera ran out of batter so only the 1 sorry

What a clean example  ... Now all the scare stories are coming through. It is without a doubt a handy van but just has it's own wee character that tends to show every once in a while. Enjoy your van mate.

  13. I Have one with the duratorque engine. 52 Plate. The only thing to be aware of is the flywheel on the duratorque's is poor and tends to fall apart over time. The shards of metal fall from it and clog up the starter motor. I have had to have my starter motor removed and cleaned out since owning it (just under a year) 75,000miles on the clock. I have been told about another fella who has the transit with the same engine and in the spell of a year he had to take the starter off three times. Other than that it is a good cheap vehicle. Just beware of the starter clogging and if it suddenly doesn't go give the starter a tap to move the particles then try starting again (eventually it will clog). Don't think you have to buy a new starter if the starter stops completely, just get it removed and clean it out, it will work again. Apparently though the flywheel will eventually fall appart (i can't sustantiate the claims though) Some people have changed over the flywheel to the older style but the kit cost approx £600. Hope this helps.

  15. I watched the programme too. It didn't reveal too much about merchants which i would have thought given they chatted to a gas merchant would have been fair game. Talking to the estate manager didn't give a great understanding to the bigger picture of how many people already use firewood but did give us an idea of how cost effective (if properly managed) it can be to large houses/estates, this is based on woodchip at that large a scale. The plans are in the pipeline for new homes to be built with wood as a heating source in mind and it will only be good in the long term, with everything proper managment is essential. How is the planting down in England? I know that in the north of Scotland around the Cairngorms we have rich woodlands and some lovely Softwood crops. As far as hardwood goes for us we are limited, thats not to say there isn't any but that access to it for us just now is only Dead Elm or dead/dangerous trees. I think our national outlook to woodfuel will change and we will start to take heed to the advanced Scandinavian countries. Over all i think this is great news for us and we should benefit greatly.
