  1. Spot on there.

Until the invention of the rough terrain forklift/telehandler all the jobs on the farm were not only back breaking but dust laden in confined spaces.

Loading and unloading 1 cwt sacks (used to be 16 0or 18 stone before my time!)of potatoes, meal, fertiliser, seed corn.

Trays of seed potatoes had to be filled from the cwt sack three at a time then stacked then loaded into the planter.

Shovelling corn into augers out of bins, unblocking combines, stubble burning.

Forking sugar beet, hand hoeing sugar beet

Working as a student on a dairy farm had a lot of the above but also the physical part of dealing with large animals.

Some of the early tractors were unbelievable for noise and dust and heat.

A day in a Track Marshall 90 after a stubble burn with the hydraulics so hot by your right elbow that they would burn you, the noise deafening, lungs and eyes full of crap and the levers so hard to pull that I have yet to meet anyone who can beat me at arm wrestling.

And yet I am still in awe of all you tree climbers and am much happier doing the ground work!

    Brilliant

Still hard work on a dairy yet. Handling cattle and feeding plus long hours.

Working on the farm definitely a good way to keep in shape 8)

  2. Evening. I seem to have spent more time than I'd rather winching myself and others out over the last few months. As a result my winch cable is looking a bit ropey (sorry for the pun!) I'm thinking of replacing it with rope instead of wire. I'd welcome people thoughts on what to go with. Cheers

Synthetic ropes are really meant for self recovery so they are static (Ie they aren't moving over objects) whereas wire ropes are ideal for all winching jobs including winching logs and recovering others

  3. Cheers for the input guys.

I had meant to take some pics of the winch in the shed with where I had thought about attaching to but time was against me. Next week!

The more I think about it having a solid anchor is the key as the tractor only weighs 1500kg with the winch and on a double pull is likely to start shifting about.

Eddie good thinking about the draw bar sadly our winch like many modern ones has a solid butt plate but I wonder if running a chain from the draw bar under the plate for the line to attach to would work or if the chain would be compromised with the load on top?

Only problem I see with running chain under the butt plate of the winch is that as you apply pressure onto the winch the chain could/will start to lift the butt plate out of the ground hence loosing your anchor. If using a chain bare in mind to use a strong enough chain and check for damage as with pressures involved you don't want anything to let go while under full load

  4. 👏👏why do digger drivers then want to move to forestry why don't all us foresters buy diggers and do digger work.

forestry isn't all about kit. knowledge of trees and love of woodlands and how they work is on going learning you can't learn in a cab seat.

I don't care what anyone says about low ground pressure a 10 tonne machine still weighs 10 tonnes next to mature oaks or any other tree.

Forestry is a lifestyle choice/way of life not just a 9-5

  5. You gotta weigh up what you want from life. Wood work doesn't have to involve much kit or expense, but then don't expect to pay a massive mortgage or fly business class (or even fly, ever again). Aim to specialise in something, become a master of that skill. You may find greater happiness in that than in chasing cash.

    :thumbup1::thumbup1::thumbup1::thumbup1:

    cash doesnt bring the happiness

  6. Evening all, toying with selling my Valmet 665-4 to free some capital up to invest into other toys, what thoughts have you for value? Has 500hrs ish on clock and pallet fork loader on front, but no ballast weight.

Slight surface rust in few places

Will take pictures tomorrow and post.

    Thanks in advance
