Thanks a lot Bayhales. The video took me ages to put together as I'm definitely happier in a rope and harness than behind a computer so I'm glad you enjoyed it and thanks for the kind words! What were you up to in Indo?

Hello arbtalker's,
I was lucky enough to be involved in a project with Sawpod to teach HOCRU (Human Orangutan Conflict Response unit) modern tree climbing and aerial rescue techniques to aid their ongoing work in Sumatra to save orangutans that come into conflict with humans or deforestation. Sometimes it is necessary for them to dart the orang-utan, sending it to sleep, often up in the canopy of a tree and then bring them down to relocate them. The techniques we taught them will hopefully make this process faster, safer and more efficient for the team and the orangutans.
I put this edit together with the footage I got from the trip. Please read the description in the link for more info on how to help this great cause, change the settings to 1080p, turn the music up and enjoy!
Thanks for watching!

If your anywhere near a shop that sells sailing supplies you can normally find ball stops that are the exact size you need and they're pretty cheap. They'll probably have some nice thin cord for it too

Had the privilege of climbing with the 53 year old south African legend leon visser last year and watching him regularly footlock 20m+ ascents on a single line in chainsaw boots was both inspiring and pretty humbling. Absolute beast, If I have half the energy and enthusiasm that he has when I get to that age ill be a happy man! massive respect to anyone who keeps climbing as a lifelong career

great video, really well done

Most memorable ones so far have been judas priest, napalm death (in a tiny venue), three inches of blood, whitesnake, ozzy and of course slayer are always awesome!
Bit different to those bands but matisyahu was awesome live and going to the reggae sumfest in Jamaica was a great experience.
Off to see motorhead and saxon together in November and cannot wait!

Not sure, Ed will have to answer that one
No worries, cheers

Hi Tony, Just wondering what sort of height you can get with 8oz and a bigshot with a trigger. A couple of friends and I are off to Indonesia climbing trees in the rainforest. We are not allowed a crossbow apparently so its the bigshot and a trigger. We were hoping for 50m shots.
Hi Ben, sounds like a great trip. I've only fired the 10 from a big shot so not sure with the 8 but I don't think you should have a problem getting around that kind of height depending on wind etc with a fully stretched bigshot. Take a spare bigshot rubber though as it kills them pretty quick being stretched out like that.

Hi there John k,
try sending a message to Delabodge on here, he will definitely be able to make something to suit your needs. He does go on holiday tomorrow but you might be able to catch him tonight if your quick!
cheers, geoff

I would like to hear one good reason why SRWP is not allowed in competitions.. I cant think of any decent reason why it is not safe.. To be quite honest I find it ridiculous that the powers that be won't/don't allow things that they don't understand. Ive seen judges at last years Victoria TCC looking at Ewan's wrench setup and taking the piss about it in each others ears.. Oddly Ewan was up to the casualty faster than all the DdRT people. Which in the reality of a real rescue is surely one of the most important things.. GRRRR
yeah, doesnt make much sense does it

cheers ewan, i know some chapters in America have allowed it, it seems to be different all over. if it is a no it would definitely suck balls

Hello,
Just wondering if anybody in the know has any info on if the ropewrench is being allowed for use in the UK and I ISA event this year? Would also be good if anyone knows if the german ISA chapter are allowing it?
Cheers, Geoff

whats the catch hes using on the bottom of the pole?
Hey steve, it's just a quick release shackle that drew set up as a trigger mechanism to get maximum power from the big shot. you pull the small piece of string on the side of it to release the elastic. works really well for aiming at bigger shots. hope that makes sense?
Unless you mean the red thing under that which is an ISC rocker rope grab . .

Cheers bbtarb,
I am looking at getting my own big shot & something that will come down with more ease than a conventional bag on high shots so I may go with this combo for my money.
How do you mean positioning? point sat well into the base of the big shot pouch & careful holding prior to launch so as not to invert ect?
Hi Danavan,
By positioning i just mean taking the time to make sure its seated well in the pouch, nice and central, so that when you release it it flies straight out at the right trajectory and doesn't hit any part of the catapult. Not an exact science but worth the extra effort when you get it right! Here's a couple of pics of steve fry getting it set up

Hi danavan,
I used the throwpod from a big shot on the africa trip and it flys well out of it. Hit a couple of high shots that regular bags were struggling with. It needs a bit of positioning to get it to fly right out of the head but when it does it works great!

Aerial rescue for orangutans

Thanks everyone for all the great feedback! I had a feeling a few people would feel cheated about the lack of close up orang-utan. We saw one mother and baby orang-utan in the wild whilst we were there. You can see the moment in the video but unfortunately the gopro has no zoom and it was a long way away. Tony got a couple of pics on his phone but the quality was pretty bad. Either way it was an incredible moment that made the trip for us! If you head to SOS – Sumatran Orangutan Society there's loads of pics and info on recent rescues and projects with the orangs!
