5 to 8 bags a week at the moment , letting all the once a year wonders sell out then hit it hard when the weather realy kicks in, cos i think what we are getting at the moment is just a taster for some real winter weather:sneaky2:

Haha well someones got to love it, right?over the years its had a bad rap,and to be honest I think alot of English firewood suppliers could do with taking a leaf or two out of our European brothers overseas.Softwood is huge over there. On a quiet week I'll bank over 350 notes after tax from selling softwood alone, with a customer base of over 289 people the proof is in the pudding that softwood can work rather well if given a shot, and certainly if people find it harder and harder to gain good hardwood cord then it just reassures them that softwood isn't such a dirty word anymore.

I've recently converted to softwood. I've been giving all my hardwood customers a free bag of softwood at 20% moisture rate. It's dry lite and clean and once you've given the speak on why softwood is the future their more than happy to try a load. It's easy to handle and process. Try given a free bag!
thats just what were going to do , nothing ventured nothing gained

Where abouts in the country are you as transport is normally biggest cost due to the length of the hoops. With the increase in fuel costs our 7.5 tonne truck is now working out at £1 per mile. Hoops at £10 each means a 25mtr x7mtr tunnel works out at £200 to which you would need to add the price of the cover £450. If you dont want the hassle of erection then you should be able to get an all inclusive price for approx £1500.

need a haulier in buxton derbyshire area just under 20 mile run any takers?

I've had the " There's someone selling bags at £30" this year. It hasn't stopped me putting mine up to £60 a bag which are selling fast.
If you listened to the moans and groans you would be out of business in a week and signing on. They have no idea of the work or costs involved in producing "good quality" firewood
Sent from my iPhone cos it was
£65 per bag this year and not one complaint

I'm doing more and more softwood, mind you I push it to the customers a lot more than the hardwood. but by far my best selling loads over the last few years are the softwood /hardwood mix's. 50% Larch etc & 50% Horse Chestnut! and before you say it yes it is any good! just a bugger to season! Its what I use at home and my customers love it. And lets face it there's going to be plenty around over the next few years!
Softwood is easier/faster to grow easier to process and if season properly burns almost as long as most hardwoods. Even my chimney sweep burns softwood and like he said the woods never the problem its the moisture that all problems stem from!
maybe we are all about to turn the corner and see the light, i am 99% convinced that good quality air dried soft wood is the way to go:thumbup:

mention soft wood to a customer in our area and they will run a mile...
i know what you mean , so they will have to be educated or go back to the gas fires

I take it you've never done contract felling, trying to earn a living with ever spiralling costs? Hardwood costs a lot to harvest, if a harvester can be used it cant handle the spready branches of the crown, whereas it can whip through a softwood plantation. A man on a saw wants to earn enough to be worth his while being out in all weathers, doing a dangerous job, then the wood has to be got to the roadside, so a forwarder is needed. More expense and more fuel. Then a timber lorry has to transport the timber to the yard to be processed, more fuel, more labour and more $$$. I'll not bore you further with the processing cost, transport costs and labor cost to deliver to your door. Softwood is ok, but it will burn quicker and you will need more of it, false economy maybe?
maybe, maybe not, i agree with what you say totaly . its the reasons behined the increased cost .....fuel were all governd by it but dont get me started on that one:sneaky2: maybe if we move towards softwood it could create more new jobs and new plantations easyer harvesting (not that i am saying that harvesting is easy its not) better stop there cos am not a politition just a simple log man

is any one thinking of giving up chasing hardwood and paying inflated prices when its found , and moving into the world of softwood????

You lot living in the Arctic?
Down here it's warm enough to still need a cooling fan going in the bedroom, just so we can get to sleep.
Can't imagine having to put heat into the house until mid October ish.
