hi

As the title says what is a good boot for footlocking?

I'm practicing the art but i struggle with the gap under my boot as the rope tends to slide through making me struggle with grip.

Wondered if there as a boot out there that has less of a heel on, i am not to fussed if the ideal boot isnt PPE because this is something id like to perfect for rec climbing or comp climbing.

Ive found a boot called "scarpa pro ascent" anyone got any reviews on this?

Just a quick couple of questions regarding the lolering of some equipment and wondered if anyone on here who is perhaps an inspector could answer.

if a spiderjack slipping on the rope as a result of wear on the cam or any other ART device that uses a "cam" would that likely be an item that a loler inspector would fail or is minor creeping acceptable?

If my rope has no information on whatsoever and no paperwork to go with it will he/she be likely to loler it?

would appreciate some feed back

So i was just having a browse for equipment for use when doing LOLER inspections such as hot knives and shrink wrap etc..

Just wondered if anybody new of a website where you can get everything you need to do this. rather than buying an item at a time through various sites, perhaps one of our arb equipment suppliers may do such a thing?

i recently touched the subject of self emplyment and contract climbing with a thread called "getting a little bored now".

Referring back to contract climbing there seems to be a few unanswered questions from a business point of view.

In theory contract climbing sounds simple meaning that you have a day rate and those happy to pay that ask you to climb and work on a tree on their behalf. However, what are the "terms and conditions" of this and should you even write some down? what happens if you get to a site and the tree in question is deemed knackered and un climbable and the client has made the error - do you still charge him a full rate?

should you check for TPO's yourself or trust them to?

If you have insurance but were working along a road and the company you contracted for had no signs and cones or you liable?

for those who contract themselves out, how do you work?

I dont think that a company could argue to much at a rate of £150 a day because if the average employed climber is on £70 -£90 plus the cost of ppe, loler, insurance and holiday and days the company loses out because of weather and staff being sick they're probably not that far away from paying a high rate.

what is your rate if you dont mind me asking steve.

hi guys, been a while since i have posted on here.

So i was just hoping perhaps may be i could steel some free advice regarding what could be the next step of my career. As the title says i'm "getting a little bored now" and frustrated with my current job (which is arboriculture by the way), listening to politics and false promises of the company and have been thinking about the future.

I'm not bored of the work - far from it! just wondering if i should think about going self employed (apologies if this mimics other peoples thread). I dont want to start a tree services company with all the kit etc.. more likely the contract climbing side of things however, selfishly i do not want to climb all week and therefore my idea was to break up the week offering a service which would include climbing, loler assessing, smaller private jobs and firewood.

An idea of my background - been in the industry for 8 years and climbing for 7. Worked for a couple of arb approved firms. RFS certified arborist with the usual tickets including cs41, plus chapter 8.

Thoughts would be appreciated, thanks gents

i have the ropetek hitchhiker i think its great, i like it but don't love it yet perhaps its because SRT is like learning to climb all over again.

Hi guys i have a question or two regarding SRT.

I've been playing about with SRT for about 6 months with some good days and some days needing improvement.

question one: if i were to use a crotch from s branch as a redirect is there any good method of getting back through the crotch?

question two: if I've branched walked a limb to get to a crotch for redirect are there any good methods getting yourself back in from the limb on SRT?

Quick question, does anybody know where I can get a bag long/big enough to fit items such as felling lever, big shot poles etc... I've been trying to find the bags you get with the fold up men at work signs.

If anyone has any links that would be great many thanks.

Is this to help a mate as a one off or to give the experience to more disabled folks?

 

I reckon this is a cause I could be happy to sponsor as would many many others I am sure.

this is to begin with just a thought for people i know who have family or friends with minor of major handicaps.

but i have also thought about recreational climbing as a business and obviously i would like to provide this service to those at a disadvantage.

Thanks guys this is great thinking, unless you have lots of money to spend on expensive winches, it's looking like a ratio of 4:1 pulley system is looking promising with one double pulley at the anchor and a double pulley attached to the harness with the hoisting line attached to either my harness with a Prussik acting as stopper or using a capsten to tie of to? Any thoughts on that much appreciated also if anyone has time to show pics or drawings of a setup that would great, thanks guys

Thanks for all the input so far, I would like to explain that this is not for a business as of yet more just an idea to help out people I may know that are disabled. So crb checks are probably not needed as of yet. I've looked at 4:1 pully systems but don't know if that's enough yet. I may need 6:1.

GRCS looks like a great idea and would be a simple fix to the problem just a shame that they are hugely expensive.

im curious about setting up a climbing system that would be useful for those with minor or severe disabilities

perhaps the individual has one hand or is paralyzed from the waste down.

The system doesnt have to be worked by them it can be worked by me from the ground but just a simple, safe and steady way of getting someone in the crown using rope and harness.

hi just wondered if anybody can answer a question,

there are a few companies in the UK e.g good leaf tree climbing and treefrog tree climbing. Do you need to be a qualified instructor to start a business like that or can you do it with the NPTC climbing ticket that most of us have.

just wondered if someone could answer a question for me.

I was looking at the possibility of a mini business in recreational tree climbing, e.g kids and adults would come for a couple of hours when they are on holiday and have a climb.

I am aware of companies like good leaf tree climbing in IOW but wondered if you need an actual instructor qualification I.E lantra award or if the relevant NPTC tickets are acceptable with of course reasonable amount of experience.

however putting wages to one side, weighing up the pros and cons of both jobs (climber or foreman) which could be considered more desirable or less stress.

often i wonder in this trade if its better to be a climber or a foreman.

naturally in this trade you have expectations of rising through the ranks, groundsman - climber - lead climber - foreman etc.. the thought of more money and more responsibility sounds great. However is it all worth it, sometimes i think back to when i was paid to just climb, it was simpler maybe even be happier?

Team leaders have alot to think about, make decisions, push people to keep motivated and constantly watch the new recruits!

im enquiring about becoming a lantra award approved instuctor. Obviously there is a few hoops to jump through first one of which is having a teaching / instructional qualification and that would be preparing to teach in the lifelong learning sector (PTLLS)

what are other people experience like in taking the PTLLS course what would i expect and the micro teaching scenario.

ive found an onling course but obviously you still have to do a small practical session.

yeh the dmm renagade sit harness looks quite nice. do you use the belay loop as your main attachment point?
