  1. Hi,

My name is Callum Throw, I am a self-employed Tree Surgery Contractor based in Ashbourne, Derbyshire. In October 2010 I started my own Tree Surgery and Contracting company, namely Total Tree Preservation.

I have been a fully qualified Arboriculturalist since leaving Merrist Wood College, Guildford, Surrey in 2008 from which I acheived a Triple Grade Distinction National Diploma in Arboriculture.

I would say my strongest assets are that I am very self-motivated, determined and keen to impress, I cannot do a bad job, I am very self critical. I have a keen desire to learn new skills and gain new experiences. On a lighter side I am easy going, don't mind a bit of banter and often find that in this industry you have got to be willing to have a laugh.

So what can I offer you:

•A Tree Climber- complete Climbing kit, PPE and MS200T

•A groundsman- complete PPE and Groundsaw (if necessary)

    •A Consultant/ source of enquiry

•A general labourer i.e. Log splitting, Gardening and Grass Mowing

I also hold comprehensive insurance, Public liability of £5,000,000 and Public Indemnity up to £1,000,000.

    Thanks for reading...

  2. As 'Billy68' said, if you are looking at getting Minted quick...your heading into the wrong game and maybe working for some companies first before starting up will show you that its a mighty hard job but if you put the effort it...you will start to reap the wonderful benefits of this industry!

I decided to go self employed in October 2010 and it has been difficult (i now know why my parents always used to say 'its not what you know... its who you know'). So I got some comprehensive insurance (Public Liability and Idemnity), registered as self employed, bought some kit, kept and still keep masses of receipts, Invoice/d clients, Kept a log of payments in and payments out (Balance sheets) and sought advice from family/friends etc.

Pay a trip to the bank manager, see what you can afford and what your limits are...don't try to grow to big/do to much etc at first (although it can be tempting)...Find some decent lads (Subbies) so you don't have to have Employers Liability and save on some paperwork !!!!Oh and yeah........use some balls!! I am truly loving the challenge and have many people to thank for giving me advice when i needed it!!

FINALLY..NEVER BE SCARED TO ASK FOR SOME HELP!!!

  3. Thanks again everyone...The problem I'm having is I need a vehicle I put woodchip/logs in to as well as kit and dog etc, but it also has to be used for quoting, surveying and doing the shopping in!! I can't afford 2 vehicles at min!!!

I know people are all thinking Transit but there has to be an alternative??Would a pickup fir much in??1tonne maybe...

    Callum

  4. Hi,

I noticed your thread RE: Lincoln work!! Try contacting B and B Tree Specialists in Washingborough, Lincoln. They are an arb approved company i worked for last year, a good company with some real hard working lads...plenty of kit and a tip site!

They have a website and the Boss' name is Harry Bavin.

    Kind regards,

    Callum Throw

  5. Hi Guys,

Thanks for all the very useful comments, excellent...I have a 200 Tdi Land Rover Defender at the minute and it has just cost me a fortune. I am a subbie and use varying types of roads on a day to day basis. I love the Landy but i can't afford to keep replacing parts at £500-1000 at a time.

I like the Warrior but have heard of the gear box and 4 x 4 problems, although most on here seem to think they are a decent work vehicle!!! MPG i am not concerned about, i run a defender so...the only concerns i now have from all your comments is the towing guts????

Oh and Nick, get the 5k L200 on here, i am also interested???

    Thanks everyone

    Callum

  6. Hi Guys,

I was wondering if anyone on here has an L200 (Warrior etc...) and if so how you feel they perform, on and off road, there reliability, cost to run and so on!!

I need a vehicle for throwing kit in the back, running the dog about and really for general everyday arb use. I don't need to chip into it or use it on an everyday basis for towing...just as a decent work vehicle??

Please feel free to tell me how you rate them, it would be a massive help!!!!

    Thanks all,

    Callum
