  1. I just arrived in Vancouver and love it. Apparently the winters are very wet here! But they work throughout the season. Vancouver is expensive to rent in, the cost of living is lower in Alberta so if you're looking to save money, you could consider Calgary or Edmonton. Have a look on the Davey Tree website, they were advertising in all those cities not long ago, and Nanaimo and Victoria on Vancouver Island I think.

  2. Yeah, bit harsh fellas. I'd imagine if he's bothered his arse to post on here, he's probably also asking round and looking in the phone book etc. Good luck eddgaiger, I'm sure most people will recognise you're putting the effort in, rather than just gypping you.

  3. Wanting to relocate! And just waiting for you all to bombard with me advice/job offers/contacts etc. ;)

But seriously, anyone any experience/ideas at all? I have an ND, will have a BSc Forestry in June, CS up to 39 for arb and 32/34 forestry. Plenty of ground work experience, though very little climbing.

    Thanks guys

  4. Not for the sake of shaming, but so other people don't get stung. Me and a mate did a few days work for someone advertising the work on here. That was about a month ago and still waiting to be paid. He's let me down several times, promising to drop the money off, send a cheque, but nothing. Even sent him letters/invoices, and now considering small claims court. I'm studying and actually had to spend money I didn't have anyway, putting fuel in the car to get to the jobs.

Is it worth naming him on here? There's plenty of other students in the area, wouldn't want anyone else ending up in the same boat.

  5. Chain and bar damage. If the chain was run really hard it might have got hot enough to damage some of the casing. It it's still running fine, i'd tell neighbour that they owe me a new bar and chain and thankgod that they didn't refuel it with straight petrol!

Also worth having a look at the sprocket.

Luckily he didn't use straight petrol! But I'm starting to wonder how accurately the two stroke was mixed. Lesson learned! Thanks folks.

  6. My neighbour had been running my prize 357 WITH ABSOLUTELY NO CHAIN OIL:scared1::scared1::scared1:

Probably for a few hours. I could cry. Anyone know if it'll have any long term effects and what, besides never lending it out again, I can do to rectify any harm?

  7. I've just invested in my first piece of machinery. I'm now the proud owner of a STIHL hedge trimmer. I've always been meticulous about maintaining and cleaning kit and so have good intentions for the hedge trimmers. I read somewhere that WD40 will disolve grease, which made me think maybe it's not the best thing for cutter blades? Does anyone know if it's worth paying the extra for the STIHL resin solvent, or whether it's essentially the same stuff?

    Any advice welcomed.

  8. I can't help on this occasion but I'm starting at Newton Rigg in a couple of weeks and so will be available short notice then to do odd days, weeks, hours etc. I've got cs30, cs31, CS39 and Aerial Rescue as well as driving licence and car. Also ND Arb. and six months groundy experience. Hope you get sorted.

  9. have you thought about using hazel ?? not something many would reomend but i have used it and it works a treat with various methods for management . either hadge laying or standard hedge cutting , bnut just a thught oh and its a bit different to what most people are going for !!!

I'd go for hazel too. There's a variety called Corylus avellana "Contorta" which is much more slowly growing but has all the ecological benefits of normal, native hazel. I'd try to reccomend a nice mix of native shrubs, something that's going to provide cover for birds and food for insects etc.

  10. There's another website, Northern Red Squirrels too. I'm just starting my own group, I have permission to trap in Jesmond Dene/Ouseburn in Newcastle. If you're interested, have a look on googlemaps. The area is really obviously a green corridor through Newcastle and YET the Local Authorities are doing next to nothing. Really gets my passions going this subject!

  11. OK, just a bit of forward planning here. I'm going to Newton Rigg, National School of Forestry in September and will be looking for as much part time work as possible. I have National Diploma in Forestry and Arb, six months experience with a tree surgeon and NPTC CS30, CS31, CS39, Climb Trees and Aerial Rescue, UA1 and a full, clean, UK driving licence.

I also have my own climbing kit and PPE. I could relocate earlier for a good offer. Just about anything considered!

  12. What are your views on them? I'm not a full time climber myself, just finished college and doing the odd-job for friends family to save up and get some kit. I've climbed in a few different harnesses and really liked the treeflex but lots of places don't seem to sell them, which has made me slightly suspicious.

Are there any particular issues with them that I wouldn't have picked up on, being inexperienced, but that you folks have noticed? Any thoughts welcome, ta.
