Tree Surveys

I'm looking to do a little tree surveying, not commercially but for social benefit, at college we were shown some software which provided a database allowing you to accurately locate trees with a GPS device (you could then tag the tree for verification) and it would allow you to input photos, update any works carried out, schedule future work etc etc.

So, with this in mind, and given that my knowledge is now some years old, can anyone advise on the lowest cost setup in terms of software and GPS device (i'd like a fairly high degree of accuracy), again this isn't for commercial use so the cost must be minimal.

Thanks.
