Brother Printer Ink Use

Just wondered if anyone else has a Brother printer/scanner/fax thing. I got one 10 months ago, to replace an old HP printer that was becoming a bit temperamental. It works ok, but it seems to really knock the ink back. It came with a set of cartridges, which ran out less than 2 months later; the next set lasted less than 3 months, and now, just over 4 months later, it's telling me that these have nearly run out too! That's 3 sets of cartridges in 10 months, at about £34 a set, to print about 300 sides of A4 at the lowest quality I can get away with. The thing is, it's the colours that run out, even though most of what I print are letters in black type; of course, the thing won't let you print anything if it's decided that any of the cartridges have run out :mad1:

Is this normal? It works out at over 30p a letter in ink alone, which seems like a lot..
