Looking for tree advice in East Devon

Recommended Posts

Hi there everyone,

I help out with a small, private nature reserve in East Devon. It's based on what used to be a lot of farmland and as such there is always room for expansion.

We have been in touch with FC, and from what little I understand they can be pretty firm on what's allowed and isn't, but in the interests of learning more anyway I thought I would ask some of the experts here :001_smile:

Sorry if this is the wrong area of the forum -- we are aiming to get some broadleaved trees planted in the near future and just wondered

  1. if there might be any pitfalls specific to coastal South West England (we're around 3 miles inland)
  2. if there were any resources/sites/books/whatever that you would recommend
  3. if it isn't too broad a question, if there are certain trees that attract certain wildlife

Apologies in advance if any of those questions are stupid, and many thanks for your time!

Tom

I am sure that you have your reasons for tackling this problem in the way that you are.:001_smile: But, as you are creating a nature reserve, wouldn't it be better to consult your local wildlife trust on the sort of species that they are keen to encourage in your area and work backwards from their list to identify the appropriate foodchains and therefore the habitat(s) that you need to establish?

Sorry if this isn't very helpful, but once you know your target species then google comes into its own ( and Arbtalk, obviously).

Hi Tom,

We offer the same service. I'll ask our Exeter based Woodlands & Countryside Manager, Claire Jordan to call you in the morning if that's OK. Claire will be more than happy to pop along and offer advice and assistance where needed.

Regards

Terry
