The small difference is because both seek to calculate the same area but based upon different dimensions of the tree. Because the circumference is obtained by multiplying the diameter by pi (3.14...) you can reverse the equation by dividing your BS5837 multiplier by pi (or 3 which gives a more usable round number)!

Diameter (or circumference / 3.14) x 12 = circumference (or diameter x 3.14) x 4

The variation occurs because pi has been rounded down to three - just like in the bible.

Thanks for clarifying that Tony... but how has pi been rounded down to three in the bible? :confused1:

"And he [Hiram] made a molten sea, ten cubits from the one rim to the other it was round all about, and...a line of thirty cubits did compass it round about..." — 1 Kings 7:23

Its frequently used to tease fundamentalists (the bible is the literal word of god right? Didn't he mean 31 cubits? He can count right?etc) and again illustrates the problems of rounding these pesky numbers.

That puts it in context Tony, but now I don't get why it should be 31 cubits... On the plus side and thanks to you I've just learned from the dictionary that a cubit is 'an ancient measure of length approximately equal to the length of a forearm' Not that it helps much - I'm just glad that God didn't write BS 5837 .:001_smile:

Because pi is 3.14... so the circumference is 10 x 3.14... = 31.4... :001_smile:
