Canker?

Hey, saw a few claret ash the otherday which had disrupted bark up to a height of about 3M. Attached a few photos of one of the trees (A few of them were worse off but forgot to grab pics). Didn't look like vandalism more like a canker. Some had been fully occluded and other parts the bark was just cracked.
