hi i have read a few bits and pieces on bats and quiet a few species like full contact in a cavity or behind flaking bark. So as David said shaving a few inches is more than enough to provide a little bit of potential bat habitat. Good pictures!

do you take an intrest in bats chap iv'e decided to join my local bat group since iv'e been doing alot of monolith work. was speecking to the ranger for nts at threave estate and he was saying they have 9 out of the 17 spiecies in the uk and two of the species are rare so perfect for roost visits and so on, been looking at a course the bct do designed for arborist basic stuff about bats and habitats, id,biology, recognition of habitat and flight paths and law looks like a very intresting course.
