  6. Hey there, first time poster on this forum. I’m a 21 year old based in Edinburgh, Scotland and looking into becoming a tree surgeon. I have experience with a saw and can run one with decent confidence but don’t have any tickets. My main question is what is the best way to go about getting qualified. I’ve looked into getting nptc and it does seem pricey. would a company usually put a new “apprentice” through there training or do they mostly look for people with previous training/ nptc certified? I would much prefer trying to get on job experience rather than doing the college route however I would consider it if it’s more likely to allow me to break in to the industry. any help here would be appreciated, cheers!

  14. Hi all, I'm confusing myself with all the new NPTC course names, of course most are self explanatory but there are some almost duplicate entries that I wouldn't mind a training provider (or student!) making a little clearer if possible. I'm about to undertake some some intensive Arb courses and want to prioritise what is the 'better' award, and what is just overkill for an entry level climber. Firstly, what does this compare to in terms of CS? It's only a level 2 award and I thought this was covered by the level 3's aerial pruning, using a chainsaw in a harness and cutting using free fall techniques > 002005 City & Guilds NPTC Level 2 Award in Branch Removal and Crown Breakdown using a Chainsaw (QCF) There are two rescue courses now, is the level 3 worth the extra time money (obviously more rescue training can never be a bad thing, but in terms of employability )? > 002013 City & Guilds NPTC Level 2 Award in Tree Climbing and Rescue (QCF) > 002106 City & Guilds NPTC Level 3 Award in Aerial Tree Rescue Operations (QCF) And lastly, what is this? Is it groundie rigging based or general site stuff? > 002008 City & Guilds NPTC Level 2 Award in Supporting Colleagues Undertaking Off Ground Tree Related Operations (QCF) Thanks in advance!

  17. Hi All, I am in need of someone who can offer a block of training in following NPTC units; NPTC Course code-2549 (aerial tree rescue operations), 2554 (chainsaw from a mewp), 2552 (rigging), first aid, 2543 (felling trees over 380) and possible refresh in new tree climbing techniques. I hold all old NPTC units (aerial rescue, chainsaw use in tee, felling) but would like to renew the units below as I haven’t climbed for a while. The problem is I will be coming from Hong Kong and would need them in a block session as soon as possible. Anywhere between Brighton and London would be good. I have emailed Scott Fraser and GMarbtrees so far. Any help would be great!! thanks
  18. Hi, Ive been looking for chainsaw training courses recently, but have been told by my employer that it must be NPTC assessed. I believe the reasoning is that NPTC use a different person than the trainer to assess, but with Lantra there is no such requirement. In the conservation sector it seems that NPTC (City & Guilds) assessment is the preferred standard, and in many cases Lantra would be rejected despite (probably) no such requirement by their insurance. (RSPB, National Trust, Wildlife Trusts etc) It seems ludicrous, If you have recently been assessed by Lantra, to have to be reassessed on exactly the same QCF criteria, to obtain the same tickets awarded by a different body. Have I missed something? I would love to hear your experience, either as an employer or experience on the job market as to what organizations are requesting or accepting. Many thanks
  19. Due to a very late cancellation a place has become available on a Chainsaw Maintenance, Cross-Cutting & Felling Small Trees course running w/c 1st June 2015 near Woodbridge. 20. Afternoon all, We are running a UA1 course on Tuesday and Wednesday of next week. Great introductory course if you are thinking of working in Arb alongside the utility networks. We are also running a Cs32 and chipper course in May also. If you are interested in any of these please get in touch with Wildtrackers!!
  21. Hi all, In the process of getting my first truck sign written, and so have asked city and guilds if I had permission to use their logo etc etc, sent off a photograph of my certificates etc. They reply saying thank you for wishing to acknowledge your achievement and attached a 'city and guilds level 2 qualified' logo. Is this as I only have up to my cs39 at the mo? I'm not cheeky enough nor do I wish to go against the rules and simply use the standard NPTC Qualified stickers that you see around, but would a potential customer look at the fact that I was 'level 2 qualified' and wander to themselves why I wasn't qualified higher or anything? What are your thoughts? Cheers, Ben.
  22. Probably explored countless times in the past however what are the opinions on the credibility of Lantra versus the basic NPTC's i.e. 30/31, 38/39 etc. The reason I ask is that the equivalent Lantra course are a whole lot cheaper at the training providers near me however I have been told to get NPTC's as they are considered more credible than Lantra. Is it worth doing Lantra over NPTC given the opportunity or vice versa?
