  1. So....I'm warming to the idea of climbing in the future....recreational to start with, hopefully progressing to arb work later on. Can anyone reccomend a good book of knots, or names of specific knots that you use regularly. Also a recommendation on a good size or type of rope to practice knots on would be useful. Thanks in advance. H.
  2. Hi all, Just thought I'd introduce myself with a first post, I've been browsing the forums gleaning information for a while. Basically, I'm 31 this year and it's occurred to me that although I enjoy my job (support work for children with learning difficulties and challenging behaviour) very much, I actually ended up doing it quite accidentally and it's not what I see myself doing for the rest of my working life. I suppose I'm fortunate to be doing a job I like whilst I look for other options, rather than desperately trying to escape! Since I was a kid I've always imagined myself working outdoors, doing something physical and "close to nature". I do have a second job, with the same employer as a handyman maintaining the building and about 1/2 an acre of garden (basic domestic stuff - tap washers, squeaky hinges, chipped paint, lawnmowing, assembling flatpacks, etc...) Anyway, I've scraped together some money and booked myself onto a CS30/31 course in July with the intention of looking at changing career before it's too late. I'd like to do tree work (obviously) or forestry. Can anybody offer any advice on how to "get into" the industry? Obviously I'm not naive enough to think that having one ticket will suddenly make me Mr Employable, so I'll need to try and get in at the bottom somewhere. What should I expect, is there much work out there and is it a competitive market? Any other skills I ought to work on or desirable certificates, etc for employers? Will lack of experience go against me? Honest and frank advice is always appreciated!
  3. Good morning good folks of arbtalk! My name is Adam, I currently live in Wakefield and am going through the process of leaving the RAF and hoping to gain a career in arboriculture. I am booked in to gain my qualifications (CS30, 31, 38, 39, 40, 41, 50) in June from TKF Training in Holmfirth as part of resettlement through the armed forces. To that end I am unqualified as an arborist but would however like to offer my services ground working or labouring for somebody in order to gain some experience within the industry. I am willing to travel, within reason, and look forward to getting stuck in. If anyone has any questions or advice feel free to give me a shout. Thank you, Ad.
  4. Hi All, New here so please forgive the newbie for any blatant stupidity and poor etiquette. I've had a little experience with a CS before but never enough to start thinking about things too much. Now I find myself wanting to use greenwood for turning and large carvings (Redwood Kings inspired to be honest). I have a few of questions which I would love it if I could get some help with: 1. Are there such things as neck and shoulder guards? I did some work with an artist from Seattle years ago who had a leather/composite guard that hung over his shoulders and fastened behind the neck. Just wondering because as a newbie to frequent saw use I want to protect from mistakes as much as possible. 2. I have found a saw on ebay from a company called XXX power tools. It's 56cc with a 20" bar. If anyone is aware of I would love some comments. I can't warrant forking out on a top make but don't want a load of rubbish either. 3. Most of the times I've used a chainsaw before has been simple crosscuts. Any tips, videos or guides on cutting down the length? Again... sorry for the newbie stuff... just want to get some decent advice before a new adventure begins. Cheers everyone. Rob
  5. Hi All, I’m new to this industry (currently an IT Salesman) looking to gain all qualifications and most importantly real, on site experience. I was wondering if it possible to exchange free day labour for some basic tuition. I have the majority of weekends free and I have a week off in March to fill. Is anyone looking for some free labour at the moment? I live in Yate, North Bristol, BS37 area. Happy to commute 1 hour each way. Cheers, John
  6. Hi guys, As you may have guessed I am new to Arbtalk so go easy on me... I have recently got into the Arb world after a major change of career direction. After university I started an office job but after a year I knew that I really wanted to work in a job that I enjoyed and found challenging. I am now 4 weeks away from completing a level 3 qualification in Arb and Forestry and gaining my cs30, cs31, cs38 and cs39 (or whatever they are calling them now). I realise that having tickets means precious little without experience, but I am now trying to look for work once I finish. I am not fussy, just want to get stuck in and gain some invaluable experience. I am based in Norfolk but would look at a short term opportunity anywhere. I also realise that full time jobs will be like gold dust so sub contracting would be just as appealing to me. I don't now if it is the 'done thing' to look for work on the forum, I guess I just thought firing the question into a group of industry professionals couldn't hurt. If anyone has any recommendations or knows of any opportunities in my area (or anywhere else), I would greatly appreciate any pointers. Thanks in advance, James
  7. Hello to everyone on the forum, this is my first post so please bear with me, I was hoping for a bit of advice from all you Forest and tree people. Basically i've been a carpenter/joiner all my life and really want to spend the rest of my working life outside doing Forest Work. How do i start? Do i go and do CS30/31 and ask somebody for a job or experience first, then CS30/31? I live in Cleobury Mortimer in South Shropshire if that helps. Does anyone know of a kindly Forester in that area that might give me a break? any advice would be much appreciated. Cheers Rob
  8. hi all i'm new to the forum so take it easy on me at the moment i'm studying in my second year of level 3 arbor, i've worked with a local arborist on a "as and when" basis and i've learnt a lot recently at college i feel like im going nowhere and really i'd like to start earning whats everyones advice, should i stick in at college and burst out my last couple of months or throw in the towel and up sticks for a job? cheers for reading
