  1. Hi I'm 23 and have recently moved up to Newcastle from mid wales and I'm looking for work in the north east. My aim is to be up in the trees as a climber eventually and I'm willing to work my way up to that. I have over a years worth of experience as a groundy, working with small arb teams dragging brash, feeding chippers, logging up and snedding out, assisting with basic rigging and aiding with assisted felling. I also have experience working grounds maintenance; strimming, mowing, hedge cutting and all the clean up that goes with that. I admit I have only recently gotten my tickets so my experience is a bit limited especially with the climbing but I'm very keen to learn and greatly value any experience I can get or any knowledge passed on. Tickets I currently have: Health and safety first aid in forestry Chainsaw maintenance and cross cutting Small tree felling Tree climbing and aerial rescue With more to come once the bank account allows... I previously worked in a small sawmill so I know how to do a hard days work. I'm punctual and I appreciate that honesty goes a long way. I love being outdoors which is mainly why I've chosen this career path and have a passion for learning all about trees and plants. I have my own saw (husky 550) and relevent PPE and a small climbing kit that is enough for basic jobs and aerial rescue. I also have a full driver's license and my own vehicle and I'm willing to travel. Would love to hear from anyone with opportunities or anyone who knows someone looking for an extra hand. My contact details [email protected] 07309099178

  5. Hi everyone, I'm new on here so sorry if I am not posting correctly (someone let me know if now). So I hope to become a tree surveyor or some sort, basically have the role of doing lots of site visits (don't want to be office based) and assessing trees whatever job title that may come under. I'm doing my level 2 arboriculture now and am going to start my ABC level 4 course in September. I also already have a BSc in Agriculture/ Plant science as well as lots of practical experience as groundie. Is there any other qualifications or training I should do to open doors towards these sort of jobs for me? Am I likely to just have to get any role (e.g. tree officer) after finishing my level 4 just to get experience whilst I study more on the side? Should I be doing a different course? Or could I get a surveying course straight of the back of these qualifications and work my way up? Sorry lots of questions, even if you can only answer one any replies at all would be greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance :)

  23. Do foresters / cutters work until retirement til mid-60s or is the work too physically demanding to last that long? If that's the case then what do you do once you're too knackered to fell at pace anymore? Is there much scope for going into woodland management, forest officer, or estate work for a more cushy lifestyle? For my part, I'm 31 been doing arb in a city for a year and enjoying it, but had a week of removing Sitka regen (weeding with chainsaws) on Highland hills in driving rain - not nice, but one day we felled small sitkas (40ft or so) and loved it. After snedding up I couldn't wait to get onto the next tree. Definitely my gut is telling me that felling in the forest is where I belong! Not sure on my longevity in this specific line of work though... But perhaps opportunities will come along. Advice appreciated!
