  4. This is a Norway Spruce growing in my mum's garden. She planted it 70 years ago rather than let her parents throw it out. However, on my last visit I noticed a lot of ivy was growing up it, and looked to have been for quite some time. I'm concerned that it will eventually overwhelm it and either kill the tree, or worse, weaken it and bring it down in a storm. It's close enough to the house that it would hit it. Also light free draining sandy soil. Should I be worried? Should I just cut the base of the ivy and hope it kills it off?
  5. Hello all. Has anyone on here been adversely affected after coming into contact with ivy. Yesterday I cleared an ivy-clad flowering cherry that was more ivy than cherry. I managed to get most off though some still remains. Halfway through I began to get a really bad headache and felt sick - so much so that clear up was a real struggle. As soon as I dumped the foliage I returned home and went straight to bed. I'd like to emphasise that it wasn't a skin reaction - just headache, pain and nausea. It is like something is able to leech through your skin into the bloodstream. I remember years ago a similar reaction but had forgotten about it until today. Anyway, 24 hours later I'm almost back to normal.
  6. Has anyone known or heard of any potential negative effects through treating ivy stumps with Glyphos that are located at the base of the host tree? Are the root systems with ivy and host tree connected in any way or interlinked through ecto-mychorizae? If not is it safe to treat ivy stumps by painting Glyphos on the cuts whilst in such close proximity to its host tree?

About

Arbtalk.co.uk is a hub for the arboriculture industry in the UK.
If you're just starting out and you need business, equipment, tech or training support you're in the right place.  If you've done it, made it, got a van load of oily t-shirts and have decided to give something back by sharing your knowledge or wisdom,  then you're welcome too.
If you would like to contribute to making this industry more effective and safe then welcome.
Just like a living tree, it'll always be a work in progress.
Please have a look around, sign up, share and contribute the best you have.
