  1. I want to start by saying I know nothing about trees, but I think the two in my front yard are not healthy. They have black bark almost all the way around and it is brittle and falling off. The trees still produce a lot of leaves, but I want to make sure they are healthy. Any thoughts? I think these are oak, but unsure.
  2. Hi all, Thanks for reading, We have a small apple tree that's been in the middle of our garden for at least 60 years! In recent years it hasn't been in good shape, quite a lot of small dead branches covered in this stuff pictured, now larger branches, sometimes showing just a couple of leaves on the end. We've reached the point where there are no leaves or small branches in the lower half of the tree. Side note, unusually it hasn't grown any apples this year! If anyone knows what this is - and even better what my best course of action might be to try to fix it we'd be very grateful. Thanks a lot! Dave C p.s. I thought I'd branch out a little, turn over a new leaf and see if someone here can get to the roots of the problem!
  3. Hi, we are having problems with our ornamental cherry tree. As the picture shows the leaves appear to have a dark spot on them that turns into a hole. Developing leaves also wither, discolour and fall prematurely. Any help would be much appreciated!
  4. Morning all, First post here and I hope someone can help. We have a small ~10-12ft tall Rowan Tree in our back garden, which started as a bare root dished out by the local council about 6 or 7 years ago. Last year it suffered somewhat with aphids I think, which were being tended to by a large number of ants. This caused the leaves in the affected areas to curl in on themselves. I trimmed away the affected branches and all seemed well. As the tree has blossomed this year it looks healthy up to about 5 or 6 feet, but then the main trunk (only a couple of inches thick) and all the branches above it appear to have died off, there were some buds, but they have never blossomed. There are also a couple of small wounds/breaks visible in the bark. I've read about fireblight and wondered if this is what we've got, or if it's something else? Any suggestions as to what it might be and how I might save this tree please?
  5. Hello I have a lovely walnut tree - just strated to produce nuts last year - now in full leaf but with significant bark damage. Does anybody have any ideas on cause or treatment ? All advice gratefully received Many thanks
  6. Hi there, Has anyone had experience killing Larch standing to deal with Phytophthora - or know of any research on doing this? What affect does it have on timber? How long will the timber last standing before rot sets in? Does it work First time? Will trees flush again in Spring? What is best product to use? Roundup BioActiv (Agricultural), or Tree&stump killer, or something else? My understanding is 3 cut marks, or drill holes 1.2m above ground & 2ml of Roundup in holes. Do this in October and the poison will be drawn down into root system with the retreating sap. Not a nice topic - but I've got a seriously crowded wood & think this might be a good way to achieve the PHN by spring. Thanks for the advice.
  7. Most of the Ilex trees in a small woods have these growths that i'm calling cankers. Are these cankers, if so please provide a research reference. Not sure what breed this is either. Thank you. Sam.
  8. A population of Aspen (Populus tremula) on one of our nature reserves has rapidly succumbed to disease this year and I am struggling to identify the cause. I submitted a report via tree alert earlier in the year, but I didn’t receive a response as I suppose the team are snowed under with reports of ash dieback and other economically important diseases. The Aspen have cankers on the small branches and twigs. Searching through the internet, the closest match I can find for the disease is Black Canker (Ceratocystis fimbriata). However, I cannot find any reports of the disease in the UK and I wonder if anyone could suggest a more likely cause? Thanks in advance for any help you can offer!
  9. Hello, I'm hoping an expert eye can tell what is wrong with my apple tree? I'm worried that it is the start of canker. It is a Spartan apple tree on M26 rootstock planted in November 2015 as a 2-year old bare root plant. On three of the branches, the bark appears to have split and looks papery. Is this the first sign of canker? There is also an area that looks more like pictures I've seen of canker, where the branch has a depression. Please can anyone identify the problem and suggest advice? I've already pruned out some of the affected branches. Hopefully, I'm just being paranoid and there's nothing wrong! It's been quite wet here (Northants), so is it possible the the bark has split due to rapid growth? Many thanks.
  10. Hi friendly people, I'm new to arboriculture, only having grown trees for a few years. This year I bought myself a couple of 2-year old apple trees and planted them. Both trees seem to be doing well but have developed what looks like different problems. I can't find out what they are so I thought I'd post photos and see if anyone could help me. The first tree has brown spots on quite a large number of leaves. The second tree has problems only at the ends of branches. The leaves curl up and turn odd - it doesn't happen to any of the other leaves which all look healthy. Any clues would be brilliant! thanks, Oli
  11. Phytophthora lateralis survey You don't need to be an AA member to get involved. If you have found any lawson cypress (not leylandii) that are looking a bit sick can you provide some details on this survey? There are links on the AA website for more information on the disease. If you have already removed the diseased trees you can still report them as we are attempting to find out where the disease is. Tell your friends - it will be open until the end of March 2015. Thanks!
  12. We have what I understand to be a Gold Crest in our North East facing garden. It is a mature tree, taller than the house. It is on the boundary of our garden and our neighbours removed all overhanging branches right up to but not including the crown. Since then the corresponding branches on our side of the fence have all fallen off. Is it possible that the tree is 'balancing' itself out due to the excessive pruning or is the loss of multiple branches more likely to be due to disease? There are no obvious signs of disease and foliage on fallen branches is green. I can upload photos another time if needed I am just keen for any thoughts sooner rather than later in case I should take urgent action. Many thanks for any advice!
  13. Thought that this might be of interest to other Arbtalkers in a number of forums including firewood, landscaping. Plant health risk register.... Plant Pests & Diseases The case study used in the workshops at the seminar used a 'theoretical' outbreak of Asian Longhorn Beetle in Croyden. How would an outbreak team tackle that (2km tree clearance zone in an urban environment) - challenging!!
  14. In metro Atlanta, and I can't figure out what fungus/disease is making the bark peel off. Here are some photos: My tree got disease, yo - Imgur
  15. Hi all, I'm wanting to improve my knowledge of tree diseases, particularly the different types of fungi/rot, as I would like to start thinking about doing a bit of surveying in the future. Can anybody recommend any good books on the subject? Thanks,
  16. Hi Guys, I am at collage studying arboriculture and have recently started doing about pest and disease and am wondering if anyone could recommend me an identification book to carry when working and seeing jobs for both fungi and pest and disease. I realise that a definitive book wont be out there as our understanding is constantly changing but is there an identification book out there worth getting for arb purposes? Cheers Conall
  17. Found this on a pear, could some one tell me what it is and is it curable and if so how! Cheers
  18. Now I don't usually read the Daily Mail, yeah that's right, someone else saw it, yeah that's right, that's how it happened, yeah.... Just saw this... The disease threatening UK's 80m ash trees after nursery imported infected saplings | Mail Online
  19. Hi There I've just received an e-mail from a good client in the South Yorkshire area. Her large sycamore (mature) has just come into leaf and only on a few branches. She is very concerned as she loves the tree. Has anyone else come across this. The tree has been pruned last year but only a few branches <15cm diameter. A few trees have been removed within the near vaccinity so would increased wind exposure cause this? But other sycamores close have NOT been affected by late / little leafing. Any help would be great. Does anyone know of this happening with sycamores in the area or nationally? Kind Regards Rich
