  1. Has anyone had any dealings when a section 154 notice was served on a tree that is a potential bat tree ? Are there any examples that a highways authority extended the 14 days notice
  2. Hi All, I am running a course with Cumbria Woodlands on Bats and Trees, this December. It's targeted at Arbs and Woodland Managers etc and aims to show people how to risk assess trees for bats when undertaking tree surveys or pre-felling checks. We cover; where bats live, what to look for, how to rule features out, how you'd know if a bat was using a tree and what to do if you do encounter bats. It will be held in South Cumbria, within easy reach of the M6, and is only one day long. At the end you get a CPD certificate. You can find the rest of the details here Bats and Trees | Courses & Events | Cumbria Woodlands Cheers, Rich
  3. Cumbria Woodlands are offering a subsidised course on Bats and Trees. It's a one day course, held in the south of Cumbria (but not too far from the motorway) and looks to address the issues of risk assessing trees for bats. You'll look at the types of features bats use, as well as how to identify potential roosts and how to rule bats out. It's aimed at Arbs, and Woodland Managers/Practitioners who may encounter bat roosts or need to make an assessment of a potential roost tree prior to felling. You can find the details here: Bats and Trees | Courses & Events | Cumbria Woodlands ---------------------------------------------- Mods: Please remove this is you deem it to be unacceptable. However, it is genuinely relevant to Trees and the Law in the UK, and may be of interest to some ArbTalkers. Cheers, Rich
  4. I'm an ecologist that performs aerial tree inspections for bats. I currently hold CS 38 (since 2009) but am looking for somewhere in East Yorkshire (will travel further if needed) that can provide a refresher course so that I can carry out some CPD. I managed to break my leg about 14 months ago and haven't been up a tree in that time. I'm about fit enough to climb again and would really like to not just have a refresher but really get better at climbing. Your recommendations are welcomed. Typsey
  5. Hi, I haven't found any recent threads on doing bat surveys, but I understand the training is out there, even for those without ecology degrees. I know it can be difficult to get into as (it seems) it's a who knows who type industry. It's something I've been interested in getting into, but haven't known where to go. Also, I need to pay the bills, so voluntary work is generally kept to a minimum. Any thoughts or direction? I'm in the southwest, by the way. Thanks
  6. Due to the demand for our recent 'Wildlife and Woodlands' Training Day CPD courses we are running 2 further stand alone one day courses on the following dates. Friday May 30th 2014 and Friday June 27th 2014. The course is run in Suffolk by highly qualified practitioners and is specifically designed for those who work with trees, in estate or woodland management, arboriculture, or conservation, and who would like to add to their Continuing Professional Development by learning more about woodland management, protected species (particularly British bat species) and the law. The course is also suitable for anyone who is working towards a Natural England Bat Licence, a barn owl licence, or a great crested newt licence. In order to make sure everyone can gain the most from the day places are strictly limited to 8 and will be available on a first come first served basis. Please don't hesitate to contact us if you require any further information. Thank you. 7. Hi all, At Access Ecology Ltd, we undertake ecological surveys and design mitigation strategies for Natural England protected species licences. As an ex-tree surgeon holding a bat worker licence, I run our Arborist Support Team providing ground-based and aerial surveys of trees to ascertain the presence or absence of bats and nesting birds. To comply with H&S we're looking for casual sub-contractors to accompany our ecologists on aerial surveys. We don't undertake tree surgery works but ask that our contractors have 'Climb Trees and Perform Aerial Rescue' certification as a minimum, we can supply climbing kit if necessary. Contractors would assist in climbing the trees and recording findings on field survey sheets. We are based in South Yorkshire but work across the country so please feel free to provide me with your contact details wherever you may be based. My contact details are below and I look forward to hearing from you, Jonathan Moore 0114 2587819 [email protected] Ecological consultants providing approved bat survey and phase 1 habitat survey - Access Ecology

    bats in trees

hi all I wanted to hear if anyone else had had involvement with bats or surveying for bats(in trees) as in the past two years our company has been on jobs where we have had to work with ecologists to survey the trees first before any work can commence. three of us have since done training and we now subby to one ecology company when they need climbers and have been training thier staff so they can access the tree if we find anything. this aside it still strikes me as a lot of trouble so has anyone any thing to say on the subject.
