  1. Hello, has anyone on here gone through the HCC level 2 online course? Im two years into my Arb journey and I’ve been interested in getting quals and eventually becoming ISA certified. I would like to know what are the most valuable qualifications to get ahead, as well as being as good an arborist I can be? Is this a good course to go through to further my arb career? Are there any other qualifications I should get instead? cheers
  2. Are you an experienced arborist with some commercial experience looking to come off the tools? Or do you know anyone who fits that description? If so this role could be of interest: Our client is a West London based Arboricultural Association approved contractor working mainly in the residential sector. They now require an Estimator Contract Manager. The job is varied and will include monitoring and supervising the teams, being responsible for some pricing and processing of quotes and conducting and delivering associated reports and method statements. This is an opportunity for the experienced climbing arborist who wants to come off the tools and is practised at good Visual Tree Assessment techniques and has proficient IT skills; a level 3 in Arb would be an advantage. The role is remote working in the NW, W & SW London areas with occasional working on site; part-time applicants will be considered. A salary of 38k is offered, negotiable depending on experience, plus a generous discretionary bonus structure. The job benefits from 28 days paid holiday leave (inc Banks) and the possibility of a company vehicle and fuel card to use during work hours. If you'd like to know more either email [email protected], attaching your CV, or call us on 01743 344466. Kate & Beccy CTC Recruitment Ltd - 'For the next step in your arb career'

  7. ARB SURVEY RESULTS - WHAT DO YOU THINK? In October we started a mission to find out more about how word travels about careers in Arb. You can read the results we has through Arbtalk here. One of the things that came up at APF in September was that there don't seem to be enough people coming into Arboriculture in general, so we decided to ask some questions. I made a couple of questionnaires, one on Arbtalk and one on Instagram, which was also shared on Facebook. The sample isn't very large, just 50 people, but the findings and comments were interesting... The question asked was: How did you find out about a career in arb? And the possible answers were family/friend, careers advice, a stranger, the internet or 'other'. The standout finding is, I think, that no one seems to hear about arb through careers advice and most people hear about it because they know someone who is in the industry. Is this a problem or an opportunity? It's probably both. Not everyone wants to work outdoors. Tree work can be physically tough and certainly requires the ability to cope with most weathers, whether from up a tree or underneath one. It makes sense that people who are in arb and enjoy it are the best ambassadors for it. That said are we missing an opportunity to spread the word outside the world of trees? How could we tell more young people about this career? And who should we even tell? People can be so kind, and the arborists of Instagram are no exception. While we desperately encouraged people to answer our questionnaire one arborist, George Husher, jumped in and sent us the survey results from her dissertation in 2018. It's a huge piece of work, with respondents from all over the world, and throws up some interesting results. One that particularly grabbed me was about roles prior to coming into arb: Out of the 423 respondents 306 had worked in other roles before coming into arboriculture. That seems a very high number. It may be that the outdoor industries attract a higher proportion of transient workers, which is probably true, but if people can come into it at any time, then that's an opportunity too. Attracting the right people and creating a working environment which is likely to keep them interested in arboriculture could be part of the solution. What do you think? Do you have different insights or suggestions as to how we can promote arb careers together? We'd love to have some open discussion around this and learn what we can do to help. Either catch us on Linkedin, Instagram or Arbtalk or email us at [email protected] to share your views. Thanks! Kate and Beccy

Not sure whether you’re ready? Or already have a PTI? Never fear – we are also offering a one-day Fungi course – another useful arb qualification. 12. Too often, arboriculture has rigidly focused on easy-to-understand, but simplistic and erroneous theories. Perhaps partially because a lot of people have made money thanks to them (which is totally understandable and respectable, in a sense). However... if we stay within the limits of those theories, then our mind will possibly not be able to devise the path of evolution. Read here the article Nature on tree risk assessment

  23. With DEFRA announcing a ban on imports into the UK of Quercus from The Netherlands, Belgium and Germany, a timely reminder to source trees from a UK nursery with a Biosecurity Policy which can demonstrate an audit trail on every tree offered for sale. At Barcham Trees we have been banging this drum for years. Imports from Europe have been made available to the Landscape Industry to offer the variety demanded but these imports need to be grown on in the UK, acclimatised and quarantined before sale, to ensure any live or dormant pests and diseases are eradicated before despatch into our glorious UK landscape. At the link below is a PDF copy of our Biosecurity Policy which you can download and save to your computer for future reference. This is a useful guide to refer to from whichever nursery you source trees for planting in the UK. https://www.barchampro.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2018/07/Barcham-Biosecurity-for-web.pdf
