  8. Hi all, I am due to leave the forces in a year and intend to qualify as a tree surgeon. I was a landscaper before I joined (15 long years ago), always keep myself in good shape, enjoy the outdoors, honking weather and all that guff... Basically, I intend to take my newly learned trade abroad, possibly France or Canada and have a few questions before I take the leap: Can you earn the money abroad? With the French and Canadians alike using wood as fuel more than here, surely everyone has a chainsaw in their shed? Qualifications wise, before I commit all my resettlement grant to say kingswood for example, are the courses here recognised abroad? While I'm looking at courses, can anyone reccomend the basics I need to be legally employable to gain experience, including climbing. I am after being a monkey with a saw to begin with, earning some money whist looking at education in conservation, forestry in the long run. Any help would be greatly appreciated or advice from anyone who has gone down the same route as I intend to do, thanks! Dan.
  9. Hi folks, we do maintenance and landscaping in West Yorkshire, mainly in north Leeds and north of Leeds, but have no tree qualifications or kit. We get asked about lowering, pruning, getting rid of trees (felling), etc, quite a lot and it's a shame to have to say no without having somebody we could recommend instead. So I'm posting here instead of lurking, a first for me. We can be flexible, anything from we pass our enquiry on to you in the hopes you may pass whatever you can't do on to us, we handle the customer side being guided by you so you are by that fact subcontracting to us, or we would be willing to consider your proposal as to how we should work together. We'd prefer to work with a freelancer or very small team. We would need to see your credentials and insurance and you are welcome to see ours. Note: we don't have tree kit, whether PPE or to do the job with, as already said so you either need your own or be prepared to give hire guidelines. So, firstly, have I posted in the right place? If not, which of the Arbtalk forums should I ask on? Followed by, have I given enough information for you to be able to point me in the right direction? Or even to offer your services? Finally, being new to the arborial scene, I find the "in-the-know" labelling a bit confusing in spite of having visited the site a few times before signing up. Is there a term for the individual or team described above? For instance, I see "climber" and "groundsman" around here a lot, whereas clients tend to refer to "tree surgeons". Are they one and the same or very different things?
  10. Hi, I have looked at your members directory but not found anyone very near me. I need 9/10 leylandii topped off and would welcome suggestions as to who might be approached in the Ashbrton Totnes area. Thanks
  11. Hello fellow arborists! So I have a problem and I don't know who can fix it... This forum seems the best place to find out! My friend has inherited a farm through his family, a very big one! It's absolutely gorgeous and the land begins in Lewes near Brighton. As gorgeous as it may be agriculturally it needs a lot of TLC (Tender Loving Care). This subject takes my interest so i'm excited to help although I do not have enough experience or knowledge on everything that needs sorting! For example: The tree's need a serious inspection I have no idea of the possible diseases etc they could have so any tree surgeon contractor/ tree pruning type of service would be great, its a big job he has a lot of trees.. Also Tree stump removal.. Sure there are many companies that do this and yet again its a big job he has/had a lot of trees, is there any companies that you guys are aware of around these areas? A personal recommendation would be fantastic. I have heard Dave Ford Tree Care in surrey? Also Geall Tree Surgery but I haven't had any personal recommendations from them, and we want a reliable company. There are many more things that we need to fix, but that is all on the agricultural side, to another forum I will go! Thanks in advance
