  5. So I decided to lay a hedge adjoining my house today. The hedge is very tall because it's full of sycamore and elder. Quite nice for privacy but it's happy around the bottom and my dogs keep going into the farmer's field next door and have been on the road from there. So wanting to improve the hedge anyway and being too tight to buy wire netting I decided I'd have a go at laying it. I did some hedge laying about 10 years ago at agricultural college and did some reading. It's not looking good though. I've done about 3 meters of it and don't know whether to continue or not. Here are the problems - •It's that overgrown on my side (I've been here a year, I wouldn't have let it get like that) that it's nearly two hedges running beside each other. Farmer's side is gnarled up hawthorn that's on its last legs from machine cutting. Upon starting to lay the hedge I realised my side is about 80% sycamore in the process of becoming trees. Lots of elder in it too that I've removed. •My plan was to just lay my side and leave the farm side of it but I don't think that's going to work. •Farm side has a rickety old barb wire fence that won't keep cows out if the hedge isn't layed properly and I didn't really want to go offering to put them a new fence in (which I'm good at and know the farmer well enough, but I didn't want the cost). I'm not sure if I can just lay one side and have it turn out good. And in just laying sycamore, ideally most of that needs to be out and hawthorn layed and some new plants put in. I'm wondering now whether I'm better just cutting the sycamore down to the actual level of the hedge, cutting off the pleachers I've layed and letting them coppice. Maybe I could plant some Blackthorn and let it sucker a bit to fill the gaps along with the coppiced stools. If both sides of the hedge were mine I wouldn't worry too much but I think I'm going to wreck the hedge if I carry on trying to lay just one side which is mostly trees. It's dark now so can't get pictures until tomorrow. I'm sure I could do an ok job of it if I was a bit more confident and was prepared to do both sides and fence it off. I don't think how I've gone about it though is going to work.
  6. Hi All, I could use some advice from experienced arborists. Please excuse my lack of knowledge on verge of ignorance, but it's all new to me and not even close to my profession. I live in Bedfordshire, soil type in my area is chalk/Soilscape 5: Freely draining lime-rich loamy soils - loamy (depending on maps used). Sycamore TPO tree is approx 50-60 ft tall, crown spreas between 39-45 ft, tree is located 9m from my front porch and 10m from main building. Building is 13 years old, timber frame end of terrace. I've noticed some damage to my drive (material tarmac, irregular bumps, no cracking) and property. Porch door and window frame crooked, cracks on brickwork coming down on both sides of windowsill (two of them further away from tree are 2-3mm, colser one is 1-1.5cm), 2 internal door frames crooked and some hairline cracks on plasterboard joins. Can this damage be caused by tree root system? Who I need to speak with to have it assessed? What is approximate cost of survey? What is deemed as safe distance for large sycamore tree from property boundary? Is there any official guidance (when submitting planning application) for tree distance by type from property boundaries? Can I build carport beneath TPO tree (in line with planning regs), or I need to get approval from Tree Officer as well? What would be the best route to have TPO removed and tree replaced with smaller less intrusive tree? Thank you for your understanding and patience. Just realized that this is probably in wrong place, can this be moved to homeowners or deleted?
  7. Hi - we are felling a couple of big ash trees and a few sycamores in the middle of Usk next week and need a home for the logs and chip. If anyone is interested please give me a ring on 07970188050. Cheers, Dan
  8. Hi and hopefully someone can help advise me. I have looked at a large sycamore today with a number of cavities from previous wounds. The wood is growing really well to heal up the holes but water is getting in and most of the heartwood is rotten. I could push my metal probe through to the sapwood on the other side of the tree. There were around three cavities that had black rotten wood inside and the lowest was also oozing a brown sludge along with water that is collecting. I'm reading though my books but struggling to know whether this tree is likely to be safe. The main trunk is rotten inside but the growth as you can see around the cavities is really good. The canopy is nice and tight with very little dead wood and overall looks healthy. Any advice here would be much appreciated.

  10. Any ideas on what's causing this and what action to take given the base feels ever so slightly spongy and near house. Cheers Sent from my iPhone using Arbtalk
  11. I was asked recently to design and make a memorial for a mate whose great uncle and wife's great uncle had both died at Flanders, co-incidently about 3 miles or so away from each other, and 2 years apart. He wanted to incorporate 2 poppies from the Tower of London and some rusty barbed wire. This is what I came up with and used sycamore from a local estate which I milled and kiln dried. Its spray lacquered before the laser engraving and has hanging plates on the reverse although it sits up ok. Mike
  12. I have two large(ish) Sycamores coming down in March and at the moment my yard is full of timber and I have nowhere for the timber from these trees. Both trees are in a front garden and close to the road (with a 2.5m tall hedge between them and road), and near Stamford, Lincs.. Anyone interested? I will consider all offers. One tree has a lot of flaking bark at the base and the crown is not too clever (a couple of large snapped limbs in the last couple of years) - so I suspect the timber from that tree wouldn't be up to much for milling/turning but should be useful for firewood but I'm not sure about the other. T1 is ~25m tall, has dbh~1m and bifurcates at ~4m into two ~40-50cm stems T2 is ~18m tall, dbh ~0.7m and bifurcates at ~3m into two stems
  13. Hi There, Currently coming across lots of medium to mature aged sycamores with damage to the bark and cambium thus killing limbs and in more severe cases the whole tree. The tree that concerns me is mature with the cambium stripping away 5M up the main trunk and about 1/3rd of the circumference of the cambium. There is clear evidence of (what I presume to be) larvae damage on the deadwood falling with clear lines of feeding indicative of beetle damage. There is a lack of entrance or exit holes on this particular tree and I'm a little stumped as to a) what species is causing it and b) the extent of the damage that this species may cause. Any ideas on the pest or how I may find out more scientifically? Regards Richard TREE CANOPY CLIMB
  14. Hello, I have 100+ year old Sycamore tree (which has been felled) in my back garden. If anyone is interested please get in contact. I'm told it's approximately 15 tonnes. I'm not a tree expert but feel free to ask questions and i will do my best to answer and appolgies in advance if i have posted this in the wrong section of the forum. Location: Keighley, West Yorkshire £ not sure what it's worth TBH
  15. Hi There I've just received an e-mail from a good client in the South Yorkshire area. Her large sycamore (mature) has just come into leaf and only on a few branches. She is very concerned as she loves the tree. Has anyone else come across this. The tree has been pruned last year but only a few branches <15cm diameter. A few trees have been removed within the near vaccinity so would increased wind exposure cause this? But other sycamores close have NOT been affected by late / little leafing. Any help would be great. Does anyone know of this happening with sycamores in the area or nationally? Kind Regards Rich
