Hi all I am looking for a bit of advice please. I have two decent size Oak tree's that went over in the storms last winter. The owners would like a table out of one of them and a few other pieces and to sell the rest. The access isn't to bad but I think they will have to milled where they have fallen (the edge of the woodland). I would like to do it myself with an Alaskan mill. I was wondering how best to cut it up (boards, planks, beams etc) and how much it would be worth roughly? What size saw, bar and which mill and chain to use? Any advice would be really appreciated. Thanks in advance. The measurements are relatively rough just done with a basic tape measure. Access to tree in the first picture. Oak section 1 Core trunk 409cm length 97cm width 310cm circumference Oak section 2 Right branch looking up tree from root 46cm wide 198cm length 175cm circumference Oak section 3 Left fork 69cm wide 150cm long 257cm circumference Oak section 4 Left branch upper fracture 168cm length 64cm wide 185cm circumference 2nd tree Core trunk 450cm length 81cm wide 224cm circumference Upper branch 185cm length 140cm length 213cm circumference

Hi, I'm getting a large-ish cedar stem lifted out by crane next week in Acton. It's around 2 1/2 foot across at breast height and is around 30' tall-ish. Anybody want it? We can lift it onto a truck or even deliver it for a fee around the M4/M40 corridor going up to the M25. PM me A.S.A.P. otherwise its going to recycling

Hi all I'm pretty new to milling. Did my research before is started. Many on here and books. Just need abit of advice on where I'm going wrong or if it's just bad luck. In the last few months I've milled a few large yew, beech and oak. The yews fine but the beech and oak have split. The stacks sheltered, woods stickered and the end grain has been sealed with oil based gloss. I've milled an oak up this morning and don't want the same to happen to this ! Any ideas of where I'm going wrong ? Cheers Matt

Alright guys... I'm a building surveyor when I'm not playing with my Magnum MS880, and today I came across a nice big straight Oak that the customer wants rid of from his garden. It's in Godalming in Surrey, GU7, with good access to the adjacent field and an amenable farmer by all accounts. It's over 3' diameter and about 40' tall, having originally been much bigger, but lost a bough or two in the '87 storm. If I lived locally I'd have it myself but I'm 600 miles from home. Any use to anyone? Seems a shame to burn it! Photos available by email. Ivan. 07790007979.

Just wondering if there are any saws out there that people know are for sale? Ive been offered the new stihl MS661 for £735 inc vat from my local dealer. But im not to fussy if theres a second hand saw out there that would do the job. Cheers Matt

Hi, I am completely new to milling haven't done any, though I have always taken an interested via this forum and YouTube. Any who, went to look a big dead oak (standing dead for about 18-24 months) The main limbs are a really nice size and straight. The customer has plenty of firewood and wanted to know if the cord could be made into oak posts? Can an alaskan mill cut thick enough "slabs" only really seen slabs in around 2"? Can dead oak be milled? The limbs are about 40" and below, if it can be milled what will I need? Have an 880 with a 36"bar (obviously to small so bar suggestions please) Any advice would be great. A lot if questions I know, sorry! Thanks

Hello! I've been asked to mill up this beech and he is in-tree-gued about what might come out of it. I suspect it might contain a couple of pockets here and there, but I've never millled beech so cant really help. Any ideas! and He's got an Oak which is still standing with some crown die-back and wants to know about how long it should be felled before sawing. I am new to sawing and have an idea but thought I'd check before telling him the wrong things! Isn't it best to mill stuff straight after its been felled? Does anyone know of a book detailing various tree types and their milling qualities, hidden quirks, which are prettyest? bascially everything to do with milling. If not I thought I might try and get loads of info from everyone on here and write one. All help and ideas greatly appreciated!

Hi All, I have a couple of large logs available for milling in west Strilingshire. One beech: c. 1m at the butt, relatively little taper, c. 10m length. One oak: c. <1m at the butt, some taper to >60cm, c. 10m length. One beech: c. 60cm at the butt, c. 50cm at the tip, c. 5m length. These are from a clearance / firewood job, but seem far too good to put the saw through (with the exception of the 2nd beech). They are basically free to anyone who wants them (I've had what I need from the job), would probably suit a woodmizer or similar. If anyone's interested, or you think you know someone who might be, pm me through here. I can get some photo's or arrange for you to come and see them.

Now then. Inspired by all of this milling chat and planning to gave a go. I think I'm going to get an Alaskan and wanted to get your thoughts on the following: Where can you buy them? Anywhere better than just googling? I'm going to use an old dolmar123 with a stihl duramatic 25in bar, bad idea?! With a 25in bar what size Alaskan? Mainly a weekend warrior who wants to cut fence posts from pine/latch, but also mill interesting bits from my woodland. Oh, and finally, lleylandii, worth milling? I have some biguns and reckon they may work like cedar, but no idea really... What's the worst that could happen?! Don't answer that...

So I do a fair bit of tree work so I am coming across plenty of nice pieces of wood that will often just get cut up for fire wood. I am looking into converting a 40ft shipping container into acomidataion/storage. I will insulate and line the whole inside with ply wood but I like the idea of making work tops, shelves, windows, doors and frames from wood that is a little more special, that wouldn't get painted. I first spotted these mills and love the look of how strait forward they and and also seem reasonably cost. (Alaskan 24" saw mill) ALASKAN PORTABLE 24" CHAINSAW SAW MILL LOGGING SAWMILL | eBay The currently only have two husqvarna 346xp saws, very nice saws for when doing tree work but I am unsure how suited they would be for milling. Also, this mill is 24", would that be adjustable as I wouldn't want to put a bar that big on a 346? I don't have any experiences with milling so I am putting this idea out for constructive criticism. Thanks Ian

Hi I am taking down 2 large planes trees and 2 not so large lime trees this sunday. Does any body want to purchase, at a very reasonable rate, this timber? The butt of the larger plane is big, not tall (15') 2+tonnes, perhaps someone would want to mill it. There is a lot of straight stems in the planes. We have a crane on sunday so could stack straight onto a truck. Need site cleared that day. Any questions, please talk to me very soon. Adam 07779352664
