  10. Woodland / Forestry Worker Caterham is one of the UK’s leading co-educational schools. It is well placed for access to town and country: the beautiful two hundred acre site is five minutes’ drive from Junction 6 of the M25, twenty minutes’ drive from Gatwick and a short walk from the local station, with several trains an hour into London. We have 44 hectares of woodland, including ancient woodland, at the head of the Caterham Valley. A management plan has been produced outlining a long term regeneration and coppicing programme, to improve habitat, woodland health, diversity and to provide an educational resource. The successful candidate will undertake the various silvicultural operations which are outlined in the School’s Management Plan, as well as day to day management of the woodland. Work will include thinning, coppicing, planting, fencing, spraying, ride cutting, arranging the sale of firewood to local merchants, ordering materials and record keeping. The attractive presentation of the woodland will also be important. Work will include the use of a modest sized forwarder for timber extraction. It is a sensitive site, both ecologically and socially, so the candidate will be very aware of issues of safety, extraction and soil damage, haulage/collection, as well as woodland use by the school and public. The candidate will be expected to work on their own initiative on a daily basis, though under the general direction of the Estates Bursar, Head Groundsman and a woodland consultant. The work will be assisted by other members of the School grounds staff whilst doing woodland work and in exchange for their time, the woodland worker will also work in the school grounds. The candidate will also work in close association with the School’s Head of Outdoor Learning to ensure that planned works support and enhance the educational use of the woodland. Salary will be based on the recommended Forestry Commission pay scales, taking into account qualifications and experience. For further information and to apply, please visit the vacancies page of our website at www.caterhamschool.co.uk The closing date for applications is Monday 4 December, interviews will take place later that week. The school reserves the right to appoint at any stage of the recruitment process; early applications are encouraged. The School is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people and expects all staff and volunteers to share this commitment. Applicants will be required to undergo child protection screening appropriate to the post including checks with past employers and the Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS).

  12. Hello all, We have a free to attend event on Saturday 9th September celebrating Native Woodlands and tied in with the removal of an old larch plantation, planted in the 1950s, from one of our sites. The event will include equipment demonstrations by Mendip Forestry and felling technique demonstrations by our local and dependable tree surgeons. We're hoping that the event will raise awareness of what the sector is all about! It would be great to know if anyone else has ever ran or been to an event like this before, and any advice regarding advertising and content would be greatly appreciated! 14. One of my proudest moments was when I was contacted by someone I had trained and told that the first aid training I had provided had saved one of their team’s life. Everyone sees first aid training as ticking a box. Well it is, but it can also make a difference. Remember it could be you needing help. As you may have gathered I am a first aid trainer, I am also a little different. I am not an amateur or a volunteer, I am an ambulance professional who maintains my annual CPD and works for the NHS in a bank capacity keeping my pre hospital skills fresh. I also have a background in remote emergency care, chainsaw use and tree climbing which all helps to making my training as fit for purpose as possible. We work in partnership with suppliers, an agricultural college and the Horse Trust in Buckinghamshire to provide excellent facilities and equipment, we also travel to train at your venue. Please visit our website for more information www.inveniotraining.co.uk we will be providing advice and updates on courses in due course.

  19. Hi guy's, I would like to thank my UK contacts who sourced us regular supplies of quality material this year. We are always on the look out for new sources who deal a lot with ash from harvesters, contractors, woodland management company's or foresters of Estates in the UK. We ideally want tree's with a diameter at breast height of 25 cm - 50 cm, with no knots, brown stain or dry rot within the butt. We are paying the largest price per m3 for hurley ash out of all Irish buyers in the UK, £230 per m3. This price does not include extraction costs if the contractor extracts the butts with his tractor/forwarder. For £230 per m3 we only require the top of the ash be removed from the tree, leaving the butt remaining 1.4 - 1.5 meters long, refer to pictures attached of this method. When all tree's are harvested, my team & I will then arrive on site to begin felling at the root base. My tree surgeon is felling 80 - 110 hurley butts per day, roughly three day's work to clean, fell & extract all the hurley butts roadside for loading on to a 40 ft container to my sawmill in Ireland. We always work well in conjunction with contractors regarding our dates of arrival in the UK etc. All the above statements can be verified by numerous forestry company's & Estates in England, Scotland. If you have any forestry colleagues or connections who deal with ash but haven't entered this market yet, just pm for my phone number or email address, and I can send on more pictures & videos. Happy new year, Gerry Ryan.

  22. Hi everyone, im in my final year at college doing L3 arb and forestry. I am looking at different employment options when i leave, and like the idea of starting my own business doing woodland management (woodland clearing, thinning, tree felling) and selling the nice timber to the mill, and the rest as fire wood. I have access to tractors and an area too store wood in the dry. Obviously there are a few questions i have before starting up, so any help would be appreciated. -How easy is it to find work doing woodland clearing/thinning and tree felling? -Any tips/advice for this type of work? -How to you guys sell your nice timber to the mill? do you just give them a ring before you cut it or after? -Is there money to be made selling firewood? -How do you deliver your firewood? pickup? Thanks in advance
  23. Hi, I'm looking for weekend work around Bristol, north Devon and Gloucestershire. Have nptc tickets in CS30, 31, 32 and 34. Also have woodchipper, PA1 & PAw6, tractor and b + e trailer ticket. Been working in this sector for 6 year's. Any interest please call 07563660491. Thanks
  24. Hi all, I'm based in Glasgow, happy to travel. I am NPTC trained and qualified, and have 4 years self-employed experience cutting trees, in domestic/urban arboriculture setting as well as forestry and peat bog restoration. I have held my climbing tickets (also NPCT) for 2 years. I have all my own PPE, a reliable chainsaw, climbing/rescue kit, chipper ticket, first aid at work, full clean UK driver's license, and my own transport. Open to any offers of work, please get in touch, distance is not a problem provided there's enough work for it to be worthwhile. Cheers! -Dru 07789621187
  25. Morning all, I'm looking to get an alpine tractor and timber trailer to allow us to start extracting from a few small woodland sites in Buckinghamshire. It's all very small scale work (<50t a year) on SSSI sites which means we're limited to low impact kit and access only during dry periods. I'm looking at the AGT850TR and COT30-470 3t timber trailer combination at the moment, from Riko. But I am new to forestry work and was hoping to get some advice! I was thinking of putting 300/65-12 tyres on the trailer along with a crane winch and band tracks as we're on heavy clay and anything to spread the weight will be useful! Anyone's thoughts on this setup would be really appreciated along with anything else to consider. Thanks all!
