  1. Hi, We are based in South Shropshire and have a volume of cut and split hardwood logs ready at the road side for collection. very low £ per m3. Cord wood also available. Please contact for more details.
  2. 40 tonnes of raw state ash wood felled aprill, am open to offers. Kington area
  3. I have looked at the various threads on vented barrow bags, and people mention the quality dropping. Also I note that they seem to bulge in the middle. Can anyone recommend some good ones with covers on top that don't bulge so much (if there is such a thing).
  4. I'm new to this forum and growing trees in general and I could do with some advice. I have three fields and I want to become self sufficient for firewood for heating/hotwater/cooking in a woodburner w water jacket and rayburn. I have planted one of the fields with mixed willow and the other half in black locust which I grew from seed from ebay (no idea what variety). I have now become aware that the speed of growth depends on the variety and that there are some even faster growing hybrids out there. I would now like to plant another 2 acres of Black Locust but with e fast growing hybrid. I saw this page that refers to a study of different varieties/hybrids and I am now trying to find the "Tulln 81-62" variety that apparently can only be propagated from suckers. Here is the link to the research: Black locust | waldwissen.net Although thorns are a big issue with these trees, I can't find anything that matches the stats for these trees in terms of energy per square metre per year. Any idea how I might track this hybrid down? Is anybody growing this hybrid over here? Thanks everyone.
  5. I'm just back from Barcelona where i befriended 2 very nice guys from London. As you know talk in a bar with plenty of beer and Long Island iced teas can lead anywhere When asked how much a net of logs was in their area they told me usually £7... I feel somewhat short changed for selling to my local coal merchant for £2... even though he's only selling them for £3. On saying that his main business by far is coal, and i imagine selling the logs is only to keep customers happy. I think we'll have to up the price by about a quid in the Autumn, don't you think ???
  6. Going to try a bit of firewood this upcoming winter, as have all equipment and space available to me on farm, looking for prices of a lorry load of ash or oak cordwood delivered to gloucester (GL3), have a weighbridge at farm if that helps, cheers Ryan.
  7. Hi, Just had my first wood burning stove put in, should hopefully be finished off tonight, can anyone point me in the right direction for firewood, ideally seasoned but also some that I can start my own supply. Thanks in advance
  8. Hi all, thought i'd like to share this. I've often struggled with small diameter logs in a saw horse, they're often prone to moving and catching on the chainsaw, so had a brainwave today...... simply clamp them into the hydraulic log splitter behind the tractor and saw away, 100% safe.
  9. Hi all, thought i'd share my latest brainwave. Last week i started using a small branch off the dying Christmas tree to light the stove. No firelighters or kindling needed, works every time. Looks like it will last a few months..... Sorry to all the kindling sellers !!
  10. Anyone care to hazard a guess as to how many standard log nets could be filled from an artic load? Would 1000--1200 be anywhere close to the mark? Thanks:thumbup1:
  11. Hi all, was wondering would a firewood processor be way faster and less work than my rather slow way of doing things? IE, lifting approx 10 or 12 sixteen foot logs about a foot in diameter on the loader's pallet toes. Then cutting them into 10 inch lengths whilst still on the loader and finally splitting them individually on a vertical tractor splitter. Cheers in advance.
  12. Hey there, A couple of queries here, I've only recently got into buying unsplit logs for my fire, as a bit of a hobby and to save a bit of cash. However I have had loads off two different people in my area one of whom was great and the other has kindly provided me with some rotting cherrywood (not spotted due to it being dark on delivery) as well as what appears to be woodworm. I've taken them out of the garage now, but I was wondering: Can you stack split logs with inner rot with your normal logs or is the rot still 'live?' And therefore likely to infect the rest. And also: What is it best to do with the woodworm logs? Should I still cut them into rounds and split for it to season. And again if outside will the woodworm thrive or die off? Cheers
  13. Four years or so ago I had about 40 acres of Douglas Fir clear felled, I believe it went mostly for fencing posts. This resulted in quite a lot of off cuts being left behind along the woodland tracks. I have ignored this lovely wood because I was told that Fir has too much creosote in it and should not be burnt in my wood stove. As this wood is now starting to go soft and rotten I will appreciate any ones views on burning Douglas Fir before the wood has 'gone beyond it'.
  14. Hi all, making my first post here, i must say i really enjoyed looking at the site this past few weeks. I have a barn full of really dry pine logs and a local merchant is taking 200 45x70 nets off me every week. Hes giving me £2 and selling them for £3 or 4 for a tenner. His main business is coal deliveries but the customers always want a few logs as well. With an artic load costing £1100 now do you think £2 per net is enough? Or should i be asking himto up the price by 50p? I could understand him for not wanting to as the local filling stations are selling them for £3 though the supermarkets are about 4 quid. Was also thinking of getting a couple of school lads on Saturdays and hit the large housing estates in the city and try selling them at 3 for a tenner, that would be alot more profitable i think. Any comments greatly appreciated, thanks:thumbup:

  22. Hello, I was hoping someone might be able to identify this tree please, I have a wee wood burner and the chance of a trailer load (windfall) but don't know if its any good for burning. It's quite heavy and seems like it would be okay once seasoned but I'm no expert! Thanks, Cris
  23. Dear all. Can you please offer any advice. I am looking to apply for planning permission to build some barn buildings to help with timber work in 22acre mixed woodland (*mainly undermanaged and overcrowded)... Thinking of 3 structures. 1) shelter for mobile sawmill and dry covered workspace. 2) Big barn to store & maintain machinery & stack drying timber (also double up as bit of a workshop). 3) Barn to act as dry room for workers, and small office with compost toilet. Also could do with a firewood drying barn but think that this could just be a temporary pole barn structure in a field? Can anyone offer any advice on planning permission needed in national parks? Also what should I consider as essential in my buildings? I am felling 5acres of infected larch this winter which I want to process onsite & store for future firewood sales. What size barns do I need to make? Also what do people suggest for roofing options? Many thanks. Doug
