We have two mature (9ft round the trunk) white poplars. The wife has taken a dislike to them and is thinking of having them taken down. She thinks it'll be good for firewood but I cringe at the thought the process and storage, let working like a stoker on the Titanic feeding matchwood into our 8kW stove! (Have done it before with Lombardy poplars but I was 10 yrs younger!) Is there any demand for poplar timber as planks etc? We are in West Essex Regards Graham

Hi all...looking for a bit of advice please. I have approx 30m3 of silver birch from a clearfell I did this winter..I think I'm going to sell it to a log man, but I have no idea how much it's worth. Had a quick google and people seem to be paying 80-100 quid per cube...is that realistic? I might have to go into log production if it is! Cheers.

My cheap Chinese chainsaw experience I have noticed that even though everyone, has seen or heard of the cheap Ebay/Amozon chainsaws, there are suprisingly few reviews of the things on here. So I figured I would give my take on china's finest. I will start by explaining, how i got into a situation in which I needed to buy something with such...... questionable reliability. It all started when some dumb f*ck delivery driver, "left my package with a neighbor" that package being a nice reconditioned Jonsereds 80. To make a long story short he just left it on my driveway, and inevitably got nicked. Needing a chainsaw desperately to finish felling, some 32" ash on a neighbors property, I go on to eBay and order the "beast", and well this is my experience with the saw. It started well out of the box, and felled and bucked 2 32" ash trees with (about 2 cords of firewood). But after that initial victory it started to run into issues, First the chain ,that came with the saw, snapped in two and few of into the brush. Then a couple days later the pull starter assembly broke. I contacted the company that sold me the saw (SGS engineering), who sent me out a new pull starter and chain. I fitted the pull starter and threw the chain in the bin, so I could fit a better/safer Oregon chain. After about a month of using it most weekends and cutting, a further 3 cords of firewood (hardwood between 10" and 25"). After which point I replaced the stock bar and gave it a new Oregon chain. A week after this point the Anti vibration/felling handle got bent, but it was easy to bend back into shape and has cause no further problems. So scores on the doors Customer service: 10/10 great customer service, sent spare parts with little hassle Quality: 7/10 Ok, but probably not great for anything more than homeowner use. Safety: 4/10 Not that good, previously mentioned flying chain and the chain break is off low quality. So overall I would probably not recommend to anyone cutting more than a cord or 2 of wood a year, and I would definitely recommend replacing the chain if you go with this saw. I have a stack of firewood, cut Aug14, for sale, it is in a field so access is not strictly roadside. I was intending to chip it for the boiler, but we currently have a surplus, hence its for sale.

We have a large stock of potato crates for sale. Made of pine planks, 7in x 1.5in in varying lengths. Suitable for firewood, shabby chic design etc. Images can be provided if requested. Dimensions:153cm x 119cm x 114cm 70kg in weight. Not standard size, but if using for firewood etc this would not matter. Hello, We have a 15 hectare mixed broadleaf woodland in West Dorset (ash, oak, cherry, lime, field maple). Trees are 13 years old (ash have done best) and we want to start thinning. We have a licence. It is a flat site, the trees are in blocks accessed by wide rides. Does anyone have an idea of the price for standing timber in this area? Or would it be financially worthwhile to do the work ourselves and sell cord wood to a firewood contactor? Thanks -
Hi. Has anyone got examples of firewood (and timber planks) drying barn as being permitted development for forestry purposes? In my view drying timber in the woods (from my own homegrown timber) should be part of my normal forestry operation & I think a drying a barn is necessary. None of my pallet stacks with tin or tarp roofs hold out water as well as a barn. However the planners say a timber drying barn requires full planning permission as a change from forestry to industrial use (I'm on a National Park which makes things a bit less easy). Has anyone got any examples of of wood drying barns being permitted development under prior notification? On appeal or as PN would be good, especial in a national park or aonb. I know of Druid Farm on DNP and Doynton in South Gloucestershire AONB, but could do with more examples. Thank you.

Hello I am looking at buying a billet processing machine. At the moment I split all of my cord along its 7-8 ft length I now need a machine which can cut the billets into logs and load them into vented bags. The Amr Quadromat seem to be fast but everything has to be cut to a very specific length as the little offcuts can cause a problem I.E they can shoot back out the machine. Does anybody process there logs in the same way or does any body know of another machine apart from the amr solomat or the two from posch .

Stacked firewood for sale AND felling contractor sought

Hi. I work for a local authority in South Bucks and we manage Country Parks. We have the following timber stacks for sale (as firewood presumably): ALSO, read to the bottom if you are interested in potential felling jobs with timber sale as price). STACK 1...Mixed species but approx. 65% deciduous, all cut 8 ft long, diameter varies from 2"-2ft, average diameter 6/7", stack measures 5ft 9" high, 88ft long. This was cut Winter 2013/14. Good access - can take photos of road surface for interested parties. Warning: only 50 pieces are over one foot diameter. Small bits inc. birch but the big bits all all oak. STACK 2...Grand fir and pine, all cut 12ft, 4"-20" diameter, average 11" diameter, Approx 140 pieces, cut Feb 2014. Good access - same place as STACK 1. Storm damage clear up. STACK 3...Scots pines, all 12ft long. 4"-2.5ft dia, average dia 1 ft, stack size 5ft3" high, 42ft long, approx 300 pieces, felled and stacked spring 2014, 55 to 60 pieces are over one ft diameter. There are a few other bits of conifer and sweet chestnut dotted around on the ground, which we would be happy to listen to offers for if you visit. In the meantime, feel free to ask any questions or request photos of the timber or the access points. We also have a sizable clearance job to undertake at one of our parks. Brash would need disposing of (fine to burn at certain times of year). It is under HLS so there are terms and conditions to adhere to. The ground conditions are potentially pretty wet in the winter, so we would be needing seasonal extraction and we want the brash disposed of (burning ok but seasonal - basically winter ok only!) The Felling Licence is in place and calculated as: 5.8 hectares, all Scots pine, approx. age of trees 35 yrs, the dbh is 31. The selective felling percentage is 70% to come out. The licence calculates the metre cubed volume at 600 m3. At this moment I'm just trying to ascertain interest in the felling and clearance job - I may have to put it out to tender depending on value. Certainly public liability insurance and tickets will be required and we would have to set you up as an official vendor etc. but this hasn't caused any problems in the past with official businesses etc. Enquiries are very welcome at this stage. Whether we clear it all in one go or stagger it over five years is also debatable at this stage. Cheers. Matt. -

Hi All I've stumbled accross this site after another long internet search, I am looking to buy a couple of tons worth of hardwood which i'm happy to collect and cut to size (over several trips) so that I can cut and break it myself - I must be unique in this request but I find it enjoyable and reminds me of my childhood winters to do this myself. Problem is i now live 150 miles from 'home' and therefore cant justify the cost of fuel to do a circa 300 mile round trip just to collect some wood. I have just moved down to the Wetherby (West Yorks) area and cant find anyone who will sell me anything other than massively over priced bags which will last all of a couple of hours on a decent fire. Any ideas will be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance! Rob.

Hello, A neighbouring farmer and I are considering putting in a plant which will produce heat and electricity. Some of the heat will probably be used at a nearby school, and we plan to use some on the farm for crop drying etc. I was wondering if anyone on here has experience with contract wood drying? Ideally someone would drop off a lorry load of green chips (ideal) or cordwood. We'd then take it down to 10-20% MC, and they'd come and pick it up a few days later. Does anyone know how much we might get £ / ton or even if there is demand for this kind of service? We are in the Bromyard area so the M5 is pretty close and there are some big woods nearby. Willk
