  1. New here. I don't know of anywhere else to seek advice on this. So here we go. I volunteer for a small charity that do conservation work in the Scottish Southern Uplands. We currently have relatively low grade "strimmers". An old Hitachi grass trimmer and a newer Stihl FS70. We need to invest in a serious upgrade to tackle forests of Gorse. Our Lantra trainer recommended the Stihl 400 series because we will need the mulching blade and scratcher blade kits. The question is. What is the sort of minimum power required to saw and mulch gorse that could be 2-3 inches thick, 12 ft high and acres upon acres? I was thinking the Stihl FS 461. We don't have heap loads of cash either. So even a brand new Stihl clearing saw is a big spend for us. We are going premium brands though. Not taking a chance on cheap crap that may look good on paper. Thanks.
  2. Hi Gents, This may be a long shot... I have kept my Husqvarna 240 RBD brushcutter alive through thick and thin for over twenty years. Pistons, pot, bearings, ignition module all replaced. It has been an absolute workhorse on tussocky grass and even gorse. Recently however, the flexible channel for the flexible drive shaft somehow became detached from its bracket and seating at the motor end and deformed the plastic portion by which it was held in place. The part number is 503 76 68-01... but it is no longer available. I might be able to figure out a Heath Robinson solution involving wires and jubilee clips but I wonder if anyone can recommend anywhere which might have parts for older Husky kit, or if they might have this part lying around unused? Thanks
  3. Looking for a pool of people to be employed on a casual basis at an Ecological Consultancy based near Huntingdon for groundwork. Mainly brushcutting/de veg works but also small chainsaw work if candidates hold relevant tickets. Hourly rate, plus mileage paid, as well as holiday pay. More information available on request.
  4. I'm looking for a straight shaft brush cutter with the option to occassionally use a hedge cutting attachment . I tried being cheap (Florabest multi-tool ) but it's a heavy and loathsome machine, the hedging "tool" is particularly awful/useless. The tiny Tanaka (TBC-2390) has caught my eye. It's very light (3.9 Kg), from a reputable brand, can have the TPH-200 hedging attachment fitted, and within budget. -So has anyone got any experience of this little weedwacker and/or the hedging attachment? Powerwise it should be ok for strimming duties, I currently have a Stihl FS-50 which is sufficiently powerful for dealing with long grass on fence lines and reeds in my brook etc. -Will the little 24cc (1.0hp) Tanaka have enough grunt to drive the hedging tool reasonably well? It'll be used to trim soft green material like Juniper, conifers, Laurel and the thin extremities of Hawthorn a couple of times a year. Thanks for any responses
  5. I am currently searching for a replacement brushcutter since my FS410 was stolen by the light fingered scum. I was set on another FS410 or FS460, but having read a few reviews etc I am reconsidering the Husky equivalent a 545RXT. I will be running it with a shredding knife attachment on thick scrub/brambles etc. So your views and opinions please?
