  1. Thanks. The trees are already felled. Some of the wind firm stumps are around 40-50cm diameter - is this going be a problem for a 6-8T excavator with the right attachments? Cheers!
  2. Hi, We have a building project coming up on our own woodland and are planning to remove a couple of hundred sitka spruce stumps which are on flat ground. We are looking to buy a used excavator to do a lot of the groundworks for the building project [foundations, service channels, drainage, gullies maintenance, felled log handling etc] but also to remove some of the sika stumps. Question: Would a 6-8T excavator [with thumb] manage the stump removal ok, accepting that it may take a little more effort/time than say a 16T machine? Thanks Alec
  3. Thanks @openspaceman, I expected that there would be some type of restrictions. We are in close contact with our local FC so I will make some enquiries
  4. Thanks, we have some other "natural" landscaping to add to the clearings - like seasonal fish-free ponds etc so its important to remove most of the stumps
  5. Fair point @drinksloe, but that was the thinking around making the low bund that follows the site boundary. So the soil from the hole will be placed on top. The bund can then have new hedgerow planted along it... This isn't a solution for all the stumps though, just for some of them.
  6. Sure, no problem. See attached. We have a good track into the woods, which we used to harvest the timber. The articulated wagons had sufficient turnaround space to pickup the timber.
  7. Storm Arwen caused around 6 acres of windthrow of our Spruce plantation. This is now cleared and we are looking at options for stump removal. We are replanting native broadleaf species within the areas that have been cleared. So, we have a lot of Spruce stumps that we could perhaps grind, remove off site, pile up somewhere in the wood or bury. One idea is to bury them along our fence boundary to create a kind of low bund, perhaps planting more hedgerow over them. Are there any restrictions around burying stumps [in the UK]? The site is around 32 acres. Thanks
  8. Hi Simon, we are still looking at different options, so could still be interested. I will dm you more details, thanks.
  9. Yes, will give you a call today if thats ok - [your number from your website.]
  10. Thanks, yes - a harvester / forwarder setup is required as the site is currently too dangerous for manual felling. Ideally we are looking for someone who has a small harvester / forwarder to work on the windthrow area [now measured as 5.5 Ac] without causing too much damage to the tracks and surrounding woodland. Cheers, Alec
  11. Hi, We are looking for an arborist company local to Northumberland who can help with 5.5 acres of 50 year old spruce windthrow. Access to the site is available via a 10ft wide private track, and there are spaces available on site for storing the logs. The site is gently sloping ground. Please respond if you are interested or if you can recommend anyone suitable? Thanks Alec
  12. Interesting, thanks. They are mostly lifted off the ground, stacked like dominoes, and the ground is gently sloping with good drainage. One concern we had for leaving them on the ground with root-base attached, was having birds nesting and other wildlife making a home during the spring time...
  13. Hi, We have about 10 acres of Sitka Spruce windthrow to clear. We want to store some on site, for our own future needs and sell the rest. When it is stored [for example at the side of the road or in a clearing], approx how long can it be there before it starts to degrade/rot? Thanks, Alec
