  1. No issues. I have done the same practice on an estate where i cut the bigger stems out of clumps , which were then processed through a harvester for firewood, the brash for bio.
  2. Paul, Fair play for bringing this up. I respect how you have accepted your problem. Although you won't realise this i knew you when you were at one of your lower points in life, an am happy to see how you have turned it around.
  3. Read what you have put. You are asking me to define things and then saying lets agree to disagree. Denial is easier than facing up .
  4. Read what you have put Dave. How do you know you were the same person drunk as sober ? it defies logic. The accumulative units in 2 bottles of wine would put most regular drinkers over the drink drive limit most mornings after.
  5. So apart from the finances which you have admitted to, when you were drinking at home were you drinking alone or with partner and children around you seeing your mood swings as you got more drunk and having to adapt to them ? Denial is a form of justification for a problem.
  6. You may not consider it has harmed you, but has it harmed others, truthfully ?
  7. Dave i respect anyone's views around excessive drinking, we all see it differently . Not everyone that drinks heavily will become addicted to the level i did, everyone has a different bottom with it. The problem i have with what you are saying is why did you find it necessary to drink up to two bottles of wine each night ? Did you like the taste of it that much, or did you drink for effect ? If its for the taste alone then there are other drinks that taste good without the negative outcome alcohol can bring, if someone is drinking to excess on a regular basis who is in control of that situation, the person or the alcohol. I have no problem around alcohol and how others use it, i am not them, however i had to accept that alcohol and myself are not a good mix and thats fine with me, my life functions without it, and i am happy with that. The alternative for me would be to experiment with controlled drinking, i have tried that one many times before i quit, and accept now i could be just one drink away from the gutter. That works for me.
  8. Not run on block paving, but i have run full size forwarders fully loaded across golf courses on a combination of ply board, plant mats and steel plate and never left a mark after multiple passes.
  9. As with all timber that dies standing Ash loses its natural properties. There are words and terms used in the round timber / sawmilling trade that describes timber that has turned past it's best , "dotey" and "frammy" are the ones i am familiar with. Anyone that is familiar with cutting standing timber on a regular basis would be able to tell the difference from colouration etc , from the felling cuts at the base of the tree. In the case of Ash , as was the case with Elm it was more to do with how many growing seasons the tree had been dead or on its way out. The outward appearance of the tree standing impacts on the internal appearance of the timber that is caused by deterioration.
  10. I know of one case that involved a fatality where HSE asked for expert advice regarding the saw.
  11. From what i have seen of spruce beetle you should be able to find patches of lifted bark and trackways on the stem . Sheep dip is more than possible.
  12. I have had a couple of Hycracks, the first one which was the cheaper farmer type model. It eventually sheared the shaft. I had a stronger shaft made which meant bigger bearings , which in turn increased the gap from base plate to cone. Could spin logs for fun if you weren't careful after the alterations. The gap increase wasn't massive but made a big difference.
  13. Something not quite right here . On older tractors 540 pto speed was achieved at around 1700 rpm.
  14. I used to value a lot of standing timber for fixed price standing sales. The method used was working in guessed multiples of 6 foot ( pre decimal) by eye. The taper is reasonably easy to calculate on a uniform tree, so it is then possible to rough calculate the mid quarter girth or circumference., then cube the measures up for volume.
  15. Some of the local plant guys will be familiar with this type of work .
  16. The Ash SPOKES may be shaped but are untreated and exposed to the elements, and are hardwoood as opposed to the softwood fencing. Do you have any evidence pressure treated softwood is immersed in a sheep dip because all the sawmills i have dealt with for the past 45 years treat pressure treated timber in a pressure treatment plant as the name suggests.?
  17. Lots of Ash spoked cart wheels that have been around longer than treated softwood fences i know of.
  18. For stock net and barbed/plain we always used a crowbar and short chain or rope . At the end of each pull the bar was put in line with the last vertical strand then the loose ends wrapped round the bar and back round the wire. Just needs a pull with a truck/tractor then to tension. Doesn.t need to be done very roll of netting, if you have a run of a roll plus to the next strainer/ corner post do it all in one pull.
  19. It doesn't matter how much someone has gone through, a drink problem is a drink problem, but for someone to write alcohol helps them with something when it is proven not to can only be some form of denial. I went through a very difficult marriage and divorce, and child custody. Did alcohol help me get through that ? no, solicitors and doctors did, i actually made things worse by drinking.
  20. Les, with respect because believe me i have been to hell and back with alcohol and would not want to discount anyone. However, as i said in my post there are a lot of false beliefs around alcohol, alcohol may reduce stress for a while, however the flip side of that is alcohol withdrawal increases stress. People say they drink because they are depressed, alcohol is a depressant, and furthermore negates any medication for depression. People say it helps them sleep, not true, quality of sleep is worse when intoxicated, A lot of these are society beliefs, society is not always right. This is not a criticism of you Les, it's just throwing it out there. I can honestly assure you that if i hadn't started to listen and accept i would not be sat typing this now.
  21. Brave post. I went full circuit and haven't had a drink for over 15 years now and don't miss it. There are a lot of false beliefs around alcohol, the bottom line is if alcohol is causing anyone problems then they have a problem with alcohol. There's at least one in every graveyard in this country that could handle it.I can assure anyone there is only ever one winner when you have a problem and carry on. There's a lot of stigma attached to alcohol problems, and i haven't met anyone yet that set out to be an alcoholic, considering the depths it can take you to why would you? Take care of yourself , and i hope it works out for you.
  22. There's plenty of Larch around, i think its more a case of it being sent to licenced processors because of disease.
  23. True figure shows quite clearly as squiggly grain. There tends to be more use of the word figure since the popularity of live edge increased , the figuring described in boards is very different to the figure in a sycamore. Reading back through the thread i see mention of some boards being figured at one end, this is likely to be root figure that runs in from the toes of the trees, that is why sycamore need to be checked higher up. There are very few logs that make the grade as buyers are looking for pure logs with no brown staining or green streak of a minimum circumference.
