  1. Hello Marc, I posted as I'm having trouble finding companies to compare. I was looking to see who has had it done and where so I can contact for a price to comapre. Cheers
  2. Hello all, I live in Scotland and I was looking for places to get a price for arb tipper body builders. I have a Ford transit tipper and I can only find one place near me that do this and want to compare a few quotes before making a decision. Any help or recommendations would be greatly appreciated. Cheers
  3. Thanks all, for the comments. I think I may try subbing when I don't have any jobs on to fill in some space and try to build a network. @ Matt, I Didn't know that rule of thumb but its good to know. Would still prefer to have a trained rescuer though for piece of mind. Cheers and good luck to you also mate.
  4. Hi Matt, I am based in Edinburgh in Scotland. I also use friends and people I know are reliable just now and pay between £90-£100 for the day also in cash on the day. My trouble is that once I move to working during the week I wont have these people to help hence the post. I like the idea of being able to mold someone into your way of working but do they not need qualifications? Im not sure that if I had someone help with no Quals and they had an accident my insurance would be valid. Also do you have to have a qualified rescuer? Cheers
  5. Hello all, I have been working to build up a business of my own on the evening and weekends while working full time during the week. I have started to think about what the next steps are for me as I have built up a fair client base through social media, word of mouth, friends and friends of friends. I have a few clients with repeat business and feel once I have my website up and actively start to advertise my business I will get some additional work. I am thinking of going 3 days in my current position to have the stability of cash inflow and try to start with 2 days to see if I can maintain enough work to sustain full time with my own business. The reason for my post today though is I have people who can help me currently at the weekends if I require an additional climber or groundie depending on the job but once I have jobs during the week I wont have these resources as they work full time also so I'm looking for peoples advice/views on how they started with sub contractors. I wish to know where do you advertise/look for someone and also trying to find people if your not quite in a position to offer anyone lots of work to start with as I don't know quite how much I will have at this time. Thanks in advance
  6. Hi BobbyG, Just wondered how you were getting on in your new venture?? I was in a similar situation but I have been climbing for almost 2 years and I did a year and a half with a great company and learned loads. I took a job also on an estate (1000 acres with my best mate) with lots of tree work and I am now looking to start on my own. I don't have a van and chipper just yet (have a 6x4 trailer) and if I get any large jobs that require I just hire them until I can sustain enough work to cut down to part-time in my current role. I'm at the stage where I have to do the jobs on the weekends so some weeks can be busy but I hope as my reputation grows my business will grow with it. I hope to get to the stage where I can work for myself and maybe even employ another climber but it all takes time. I was looking for advice on where to take arisings from jobs if you don't have a yard or a place to store wood? I read some good tips on hear like multiple places that will take wood chips and on a few jobs I have advertised on gumtree for free untreated wood and people come and take it away for you. can anyone advise on what they did at the start of their business with all the timber and chip?
  7. I'm sure there is!! I suppose I wanted to know that with the employees liability would that still cover a groundie that has no formal qualifications i.e chainsaw and chipper tickets? I have a lad who wants to help and is not currently in work but doesn't have the money to do any of his tickets just now. I would love to help him out but I also don't want for him not to be covered by my policy if he was ever to have an accident. This is my first policy as self employed and I know I am covered for any such occasion as is my usual subbie who is a fully qualified climber who can rescue me. Maybe I will go through the policy with a fine tooth comb but I couldn't see anything concrete in it.
  8. Sure it was my PL insurance he was talking about. I also have employee Liability to cover any subbies
  9. How does this work with insurance? I was told that if I had an accident my insurance would be null and void if I didn't have a trained rescuer. I have a lad who is very competent using a chainsaw but has no chainsaw ticket and is not a climber. where does your insurance stand on using him as opposed to a fully qualified subbie? Thanks
