Lock those ratchet straps shut though.

I was just using the straps to stop any more splitting. Do you reckon I should have used them to close the gap?

Finally got back to sort this today. Customer finally agreed to a MEWP. Narrow lane only allowed us a small (ish) one that couldn't reach the tip. Braced the split, winch holding the stem, bit of polesaw action from the MEWP until I was happy to go unto the stem, then chog it down. Sever bottom and lift, then lower the stem. No damage.

What a machine!!

I use Freemake for cutting the video to the bits I need, then VideoPad for putting it all together.

Do any of you guys use your wee chipper to chip into a mini dumper (muck truck or similar) then load into tipper? I've read most of this thread at various times, think I saw it somewhere but wondering on the practical application of it. Seems like a decent idea. Keep all the mess in the one area, removes long drags.

Not a bad idea. That tree is about 35ft tall, pretty sound. It forms part of a old hedge that has been left unmaintained that is now just a row of trees. I'd have no problem climbing the main stem of the conifer. Not sure if I'd want to be up there if I'd secured the split stem to it though.

I'll call the customer tomorrow and say it must be done with machinery. She's an old doll, half deaf. The shed is filled with junk she has hoarded over the years. As is every other space around her house. Trying to explain a MEWP to her should be fun. When we were there one of the neighbours came out, surprised to see us, said 'theres no way in the world she would ever pay anyone to work on her trees'.

Thanks for all the replies. It'd annoyed me not doing it but it seems that I called it right.

Had a look at this last Tuesday then went back the next day to do it, but walked away cause I felt I was leaving too much to chance.

• no access for machinery
• customer won't pay for machinery
• shed to be saved (minor damages accepted)
• main anchor would be on stem behind split one. If you're out on the tip, if failure occurs, you're swinging into the shed/ground
• second anchor off a Sycamore. Lower and to the left/behind of the split limb

Hate not doing a job but didn't feel I could control the chaos on this one. Anyone got any bright ideas?

Got mine from Santander yesterday into my personal account. Took about 8 days. Had to submit Tax return and proof of business and address to them but overall a painless process.

Regards paying off other finance - there is a stipulation against that and pruchasing new equipment. Something about only being allowed to replace existing equipment, like for like. So will have to be creative.

Just came across these chippers. Anyone got any practical experience with them?

I bought one of these last year. It is a decent wee bit of kit the only problem is getting replacement teeth. Monster only supply the teeth as a pack, 3 left, 3 right, 3 straight for £130. Problem for us is we break mostly straight teeth. Has anyone tried different teeth on the wheel or replaced the wheel? Do Hyundai supply single teeth?

I would have the same feeling but we're all going to have to pay this back whether we take the money or not. I don't think its a loan were everyone's repayments will be different.  If you don't take it, you'll still be paying it back for years to come.  I'll be taking what is offered and try to put it towards something useful.

Not sure why there is such confusion over work, or not to work. Pretty simple there on the government website. There's also radio ads on the national stations saying the same thing. 

It's a personal decision whether to work or not, not the law. Obviously whatever we chose we should adhere to the social distancing guidelines. In our line of work that is very easy.

We're in a 3 week partial lockdown, what if its extended another 3 weeks? Or it goes from partial to complete lockdown?

Watched the speech fully expecting it to be a lock down. Think Boris dodge it. He could very explicitly said 'only key workers can travel to work' but he didn't. I think everyone would have accepted it if he had.

Yeah, that one drifted a bit with the weight/wind!! Keeping him on his toes.

Customer is renovating the existing bungalow, extension into back garden where those trees where and landscaping the garden. Garden faces directly south. Removal of the trees made a massive difference to their light and space.

One we've been at for a few weeks. Glad its over.

Not sure if this is the same one as fits the 525lk combi unit. That attachment is comparably to the Stihl BG86 in terms of performance.

Access - install 2 climbing lines from the ground. So no ladders to get you into the tree. Also, throwing two throwlines to two separate anchor points. I've wasted many hours trying to hit anchor points with a single throw bag. Could be lunchtime before I've made a cut. I can see how this goes - try to comply, takes ages to get to your main anchor point, takes ages to get work done, two groundsman watching you fannying about, you've quoted the same price as you always would, mid afternoon you start stressing that the job isn't going to get done, take shortcuts and start rushing, accident happens. Or comply all day, job runs into the next day, you make no money, eventually you give up. One things for sure, customers aren't going to pay more cause you have to be slower.

Try them. I sell mine,unprocessed, by the trailer load delivered, but if someone is willing to collect from site they get it for free.
