  1. I see a lot of ring shake in Oak. If I was asked before seeing this post Id have thought it was one of the most common species to get it. Never seen it in Elm, or at least the Elm Ive milled and Im yet to mill Sweet Chestnut in any meaningful quantities. Ive a mate who is a Timber Framer and worked with Oak since he was 15 and see's ring shake all the time, its the first thing he checks for when selecting an Oak Log. Star shake is another issue but not as common as ring shake (from my own experiences)
  2. Really depends. I sometimes get a 10t bogie delivering me Larch or Elm. You'll pay a small premium for getting that size of delivery over an Arctic. I think I paid £700 for the last 10t bogie of Elm but there was maybe 6-7t in it.
  3. I can mill 5.7m on my Bandsaw but I if Im re-sawing already squared off beams then its easy to slide the beam down the bunks and finish the cut. 7.4m would not be an issue. I did this recently for a customer as he needed 20 beams like this done. You're way to far away for me to do something like this but Id be wanting £300 if you where closer.
  4. Depends on the profitability of the work though. If you can make £150 an hour with your own work and someone wants something re-sawn they dont normally want to spend more than £50 an hour. Even then they scoff. Plus the hassle of stopping what you're already doing or planning to do is not always that straightforward. Is there metal in the junk they're bringing in? They're not gonna want to spring for a new band plus your down time. You spend more timer dealing with messers and dont make a penny out of them.
  5. That colour will not last more than a few weeks, a couple months at best. Then it will just turn grey.
  6. Id not bother even it if was dumped in my yard and Dave milled it for me.
  7. Some of the Bandsaw milling I do comes from Customers wanting their blown tree's repurposed.
  8. Thinking about it more and looking more into Earthballs I’m not so sure now. year round they are never bigger than in the pictures and generally Hazelnut/Cob sized. They certainly are not potato sized. The dogs eat as much of them as they can dig out. They never go near actual Earthballs when they do grow above ground.
  9. This seems to be what they are! The Dogs love them and have saught them out for the last 8 years and seem to be fine.
  10. It’s a hard crunchy shell. They seem to be like this year round and always this size. Never see them above ground and don’t see regular puff balls above ground either. Lots of ther mushrooms though including a good crop of Chanterelles. They’re always 1-3” deep and growing within a fine mat of roots.
  11. I’ve three Samoyeds and they all love to snuffle out these things. They’re about 1-3” below ground level and in the local woodland. They seem to zero in on them and once they’ve dug it out they’ll eat it then move onto the next one. They must dig up 10-15 each on a walk. There is no real smell to them and the insides are a very fine dark brown powder.
