Farmers manage around 70% of the UK’s land area, and many of our trees grow in farming landscapes across fields, hedgerows, near roadsides and near buildings. However, foresters are not well versed in reaching farmers and engaging around tree health issues in a way that resonates with farmers and their priorities. In this talk, we’ll be discussing how and why to improve engagement with farmers, using the ‘Farmer’s Guide to Ash Dieback’ as an example.

The Story of a lifelong adventure with trees and tree folk.
    ➡
    WWW.TREES.ORG.UK

A source of publications, guidance notes and leaflets for arboriculturists. Competitively priced available to members...
Ted kindly funded the production and printing of this book, and all the proceeds from sales will go to the Arboricultural Association charity, to support education in tree ecology.
This book tells the story of Ted Green’s lifelong adventure with trees and tree folk. Since earliest childhood, and with Windsor Great Park as his playground, Ted has been asking questions about nature and our environment. Treetime is a collection of tales from over 80 years spent observing, questioning and caring for the natural world and all its wildlife, especially fungi, trees and birds. Professor Mick Crawley, an internationally renowned ecologist, calls Ted ‘the complete naturalist’ in his book The Flora of Berkshire.

  12. Roots - A Field Guide for Identification

    • A groundbreaking new field guide. Available in English for the first time.
    • Roots from 45 species of street and park trees with high resolution photos and detailed descriptions

By Kristin Moldestad and Olve Lundetræ

    BUY ROOTS

What do roots look like? Is it possible to find out in the field which tree species a root belongs to? The appearance of tree roots has barely been studied, but by increasing our knowledge and understanding, we can ensure that more trees are preserved. This book gives a unique insight into what the roots of different trees look like, exploring a hitherto little-described underground world.

Roots from 45 species of street and park trees are featured in photographs accompanied by descriptions of each example’s anatomical characteristics, habit and, in some cases, scent. The book is practically oriented and allows you to identify roots in the field, whether you are a professional or just curious about one of the most important parts of the tree – the underground system, where nutrients, water and oxygen exchange happen to create the basis for everything we see above ground.

A new format and a spectacular new venue

The UK’s biggest arboriculture conference presents an innovative new format and world-class lineup of incredible UK and international speakers covering a wide range of topics relevant to everyone working in arboriculture and related environmental sectors.

Early Bird Deadline: 7th August 2023

    SPEAKER PREVIEW: Kristin Moldestad (Norway)

A field guide to identification of tree roots

Kristin is a consulting arborist at COWI A/S and a part-time teacher at a technical college in Norway. She has been in the arboriculture industry for about 20 years and is often out on building and infrastructure construction sites ensuring that the correct procedures are followed to protect existing trees. She also collaborates with architects and landscape architects to find good solutions for preserving trees. Over the last two years, she has dedicated herself to studying tree roots.

    Abstract

Construction works and existing trees are a common and complex combination. The responsibility for overseeing the protection and wellbeing of trees on a site often falls to arborists. When it comes to trunks and crowns, methods of species identification and assessment are plentiful and well known, but this has not been the case for tree roots. The aim of our project has been to create a field guide for arborists to aid the identification of roots. My colleagues and I are often on site to ensure that the correct procedures are followed to protect existing trees. When digging works reveal tree roots, it is not always obvious which tree the roots belong to. Roots can expand far beyond a tree’s crown, and they are covered in soil and dirt. This recurring challenge – and our professional responsibility to save trees – inspired me and my colleague Olve Lundetræ to study more closely the roots we came across during our work. We began to assess roots more systematically as they appeared in trenches and on building sites. As a result, we learned that roots of different species are almost as different as their branches and leaves. We found roots with beautiful colours, amazing patterns, strange bark and different structures, and some with a distinct smell. So far, we have identified roots from around 40 different tree species. Our field guide includes descriptions and photographs of the roots. We hope that this information will help other arborists on site, and perhaps give them the evidence they need to change the direction of a trench or get a planned building moved by a few metres.

The 56th Arboricultural Association Conference features a new format that delivers fantastic content, better value and more opportunities to catch up with old friends and colleagues, and meet like-minded professionals. On Sunday delegates are invited to attend the Masters final of the 2023 UK & Ireland Tree Climbing Competition, followed by a drinks reception. The seminar and workshop sessions will take place on Monday and Tuesday in the spectacular new Warwick University Oculus Conference centre. The field trip will take place on Wednesday featuring more conference content and a guided tour of some of the best trees at beautiful Coombe Abbey.

    Why the new format?

Feedback from delegates in person and reviewing the post conference surveys showed a trend, with many saying they could not justify three full days away from the office. Discussions with partners around the world also highlighted the need for in person conferences to do things differently, with so much high-quality online content available for free. The new conference format is intended to offer flexibility, so those that wish to attend the full three days, plus Sunday’s activities can still do so. While those who can only attend two days will have access to all the presentations and workshop sessions. The change also means a reduction in the cost of a whole Conference package ticket.

  24. Netherlands Study Tour! - A unique tree care voyage! Learn, Network & Discover...
    28-30 June 2023 👇

Management of OPM, Ash Dieback and Sooty bark disease in the Urban Jungle of the Netherlands

For this unique arboricultural journey, you won't be confined to an office; instead, you'll be outside or riding in the Safari Bus as you explore the Urban Dutch Jungle!

A special three-day study tour in the Netherlands, with the opportunity to experience first-hand the consequences of oak processionary moth (OPM) in the eastern region of the Netherlands and observe the outcomes of ash dieback (ADB) in the west, as well as sooty bark disease.

A series of field trips will take delegates to hot spots of infestation, providing numerous examples and offering practical information, demonstrating the effects of these diseases on trees, as well as insights into their management and policies.

Throughout the journey, Henry Kuppen will sprinkle in his knowledge of tree diseases and offer insights into the landscape's origins. We’ll also be joined by scientist, consultant and OPM expert Wendy Batenburg and Roel Geerts, an expert in Ash Dieback analysis and decision making.

    The Explorer’s Mindset:

Participants do not need prior knowledge of oak processionary moth, ash dieback, or sooty bark disease to participate in this excursion. However, a professional background in arboriculture is required. Having an "explorer's mindset" and a strong interest in OPM, ADB, and SBD will enhance participants' enjoyment of the field trips. Group discussions and Q&A will be encouraged throughout.
