  1. To reduce surface area for infection and to the collar where healing cells are??
  2. Too big to prune out and too risky to let it spread?
  3. Just before Xmas is the last time to prune and definitely when dormant. yeah, the pics are apple only unfortunately it’s a real tricky one.
  4. Hi, I have the following acer tree. pictures below. a large limb snapped off in the summer and I cut it back to the collar. Not the correct time I know but felt it better than leaving a rough snapped branch break. i went to check it out this November and noticed breaking bark lower down from the cut and coral spot around the discoloured, breaking bark. its a major limb so don’t really want to remove it below the infection but also want to stop the tree dying completely. Does anybody have an experience or advice on what to do? Will it survive if left? Can I treat it without removing basically half the tree below the infection? Any advice would be appreciated. I am hoping it won’t be fatal as it’s a wonderful tree. IMG_3282.HEIC IMG_3280.HEIC IMG_3280.HEIC IMG_3282.HEIC
  5. Sound advice… I did think being a willow it would recover. i am a gardener but know a little about how well willows in general respond to hard pruning and that they are susceptible to brittle snaps. what worries me is that I piled a load of leaves nearby tarped and hoping this wasn’t what caused it. Although it was away from the trunk and only for a week or two till my next visit… as I know they suck water up like the proverbial. And they sent me the picture asking what happened. i am a gardener and not a tree surgeon. i suspect it’s the frosts that have caused it. But any thoughts are useful. It’s not too dangerous as away from the road but they like the tree… was it my fault with the leaves as it was a huge huge huge pile but was only there for a bout four days one side of the tree… interesting tho. The tree seems healthy imo
  6. Hi i have this goat willow. A limb coming from the main trunk has snapped, I know they are prone to this as are brittle trees. my question is will this survive or will it kill the whole tree. Happened yesterday. pic attached. Any advice would be appreciated regards paul
  7. I will check where it gets stuck and what direction ect… but sometimes it pulls over. Then locks up again. So certain it’s an obstruction somewhere… when it has enough force before it gets stuck it passes through. But when it hits whatever it is I have to use force on the flywheel to free it again. will get back to you after I have checked as this might help others too
  8. It turns clockwise but gets jammed anti-clockwise (the way it jams when pull cord is pulled). I have not got the pull cord wrapped round wrong way or something silly?? I don’t think it’s hydro lock as it still gets jammed with plug pulled? Think hydro jam would not get jammed with plug pulled??
  9. Hi I have a Stihl av 038. When it pulls over it fires…. But it’s rare to be able to pull it over, because the pull cord locks up. I have tried everything… flywheel ok, pull cord and assembly ok, piston and rings look intact from exhaust and carb port. If I undo pull cord assembly and turn the flywheel with spanner it frees up again… untill it jams/locks up again. Everything else is working. Good compression ect. Even with spark plug removed… still locks up every rotation or other one. What could it be? Tearing my hair out here. LolI’m
  10. The guy i used to get it from did jobs out my way. He took the better stuff back and i took what he didnt want or couldnt get on. Saved him loads. He charged for removal. I bunged him a few quid. He saved another journey back.
  11. Unless you are doing artic loads at a time fast. I am talking van loads.
  12. Thanks for your insight. Probably not worth doing then. They must be selling it to people who use it themselves. 60 quid per ton.. if that makes 2 ton bags you gotta pick it up, chop it up sell it, deliver it.. all to turn 60 into 120 before all that time and cost. I wasnt looking at premium grade timber... more sensible ish arb waste. And I buy alot of that at 30 per ton to collect.. sometimes from jobs.
  13. It really helped the guy I used to get it from. He took the nicer straight bits but never had to come back to his jobs for a second load saving him time. Which we all know is of value.
  14. Thank you for the advice. Yes, I was thinking 30 pounds per ton would be fair. That gives me say 30 pounds diesel cost and time to pick up. Given I could get 2 ton bags of logs from the 60 pounds total cost then that gives me 60 pounds profit if i sell at 60 pounds a ton bag. Which seems fair considering all the work involved and if it saves tree surgeons shifting it about. If there are any takers I would be interested. Thanks for the advice.
  15. I did have a great arrangement with a tree surgeon. I used to gk and pick up his wood from his jobs. He took the chip and dumped it locally and I took the wood in return for it. As he had no yard at the time. Also, cleared a guys yard for him when he was moving out in returm for the wood. But as I say. Happy to buy it in
  16. I am in hertfordshire... so canntravel but not loads loads miles. Also, get enough softwood free already. Cant offer a tip site as cant have people coming and going where I store. They wont let me.
  17. Well, its gotta be worth my while paying to collect, cutting up and selling on. I reakon, and this is on the assumption, that 1 tonne in weight of unseasoned raw wood produces 2 x builders bags of logs. Then I need to be paying under half of retail value per tonne? Hit me with a price? Per large transit van load (nearly as much as a transit tipper loaded full). My van carries 2 tonne.
  18. Hi, I am looking to buy raw wood in order to process into firewood. Dont mind unseasoned but only looking for hardwood really. If anyone wishes to sell any at the right price then let me know. I have brought by the ton before. How many builders bags should I be getting per ton of unseasoned wood? I am in a position to collect as have a large van. Sometimes from jobs if it helps but obviously the price given will reflect the costs and time to pick up. Any advice or if you have any fir sale please feel free to message. Thanks.
  19. Thanks for replies so far... its narrowing down my dilemma a little. I am a gardener not a tree surgeon.
  20. Can anybody tell me the name of this small tree / shrub please? Thanks.
