Quite a few of these books have been recommended on ArbTalk at some point.

This has been taken from the link below; for the C&G Level 3 F&A handbook which lists recommended resources after the unit outlines so simply find the units you are interested in and scroll to the end of each unit for the recommended books.

Unit 308 for Advanced Arboricultural Practices (ie rigging) with a mention of the aforementioned Jepson.

Hope that is helpful as a large starting point.

If you are ex-services then be sure to check if you have any ELCAs credits available. There are some great starter packages for those looking to start in the Forestry and Arboriculture industry.

Sorry to hijack the thread. Do u have a link for any of these courses. I have some ELC to use up

    Hi Tony,

Our ELCs programmes are detailed here:

    http://lynhertraining.com/elcas/

We are based on the Cornwall/Devon border. We have trained ex-service leavers from all over the uk and can plan training in blocks and to work around your schedule as much as we can. We have NPTC programmes but also offer the City and Guilds Level 3 Forestry and Arboriculture Qualifications with more theory based courses such as Tree Pests and Tree Surveying. Have a look and see what you think - alternatively let us know what you'd like to achieve and we can see if we can work them in as part of an ELCs programme.

Look forward to hearing from you if we suit your needs.

  3. Here at Lynher Training we offer a range of ELCAs approved programmes from just gaining practical NPTC tickets to gaining a full Level 3 in Forestry and Arb Qualification with topics such as Tree Pests and Diseases, and Tree Surveying. We are also in the process of being approved for the ABC Level 4 in Arb which will be available in Spring 2018 (a first for ELCAs it seems). See our ELCAs page here:

    http://lynhertraining.com/elcas/

As an Independent Training Provider we can flexible with course dates (most of the time) and arrange training into blocks to suit you. All our training takes place in and around the Devon/Cornwall border.

Hope you find your perfect training programme.

  4. Yes, a medium tree (felling over 380mm) would count as refresher for your basic chainsaw (chainsaw maintenance, cross-cutting and felling up to 380mm). The NPTC 301 schedule covers maintenance and cross-cutting elements too. But in future they will be required ('HSE advised') to refresh all these felling/windblown elements by completing a refresher course with a trusted training provider (preferably taught by a current NPTC instructor/assessor) to ensure continued best practice and cover any new HSE or legislation requirements.

  5. Hi Ben,

We are Lynher Training on the Devon/Cornwall Border. 30+years as a land-based training provider and a few years as a NPTC Test Centre. We are always available to help with any advice you may need when starting out and obviously have links with lots of local arborists. We may also be able to offer some funding towards getting your NPTC qualifications and moving up the knowledge ladder. So if you'd like a informal chat then do give us a call. 01822 832232.

  6. Hi Stuart,

As the UA certifications are a NPTC qualification; these all have to be assessed by an approved NPTC Test centre. So to find your nearest Test centre go to the NPTC website >select your qualification> click find your nearest centre.

    So this link for UA

    https://www.nptc.org.uk/qualificationschemedetail.aspx?id=296

    Click find a centre.

    Then a postcode.

This shows all the local NPTC test centres who can provide the test. They may or may not provide the training but they will know who will if you contact them.

    Hope that helps.

    Kind Regards,

    Lynher Training

  7. We are now running the Arboriculture Association's 'BS5837 Tree Surveying and categorisation' 1 day course on the 1st November in the Tamar Valley (Devon/Cornwall Border). Instructed by The Arb Association's Simon Scotting (who teaches most of our L3F&A theory courses - as listed in the above post). The cost is £235 including lunch. Get in touch to book your place. Thanks. 01822 832232. [email protected]

  8. We have a Lantra Basic Tree Inspection running on November 1st in the Tamar Valley on the Devon/Cornwall Border. Alternatively we also run a more advanced course which is a 3 day course achieving the City and Guilds Level 3 in Forestry and Arboriculture Unit 314 - Undertake Surveys and Inspection and Analyse the Data - this runs on the 8th-10th November. This 3 day course is more thorough and a good step towards achieving the Lantra Professional Tree Inspection (our next Lantra PTI runs on the 24th July.) All courses run on the Devon/Cornwall border.

Other units available through the City and Guilds/NPTC Level 3 Forestry and Arboriculture qualification include Tree Pests, Diseases and Disorders, Tree and Plant Science, Tree Identification and Planting, Tree Planting and Aftercare, and Woodland Management. All of which can be achieved separately or contribute towards a full Level 3 Forestry and Arboriculture Qualification (Certificate, Subsidiary Diploma or 90-Credit Diploma). If you are interested then do get in contact with us. Most of these courses are running in November 2017.

  9. Obviously its at the discretion of the insurer as to what they include in their policy but I believe that awarding bodies/HSE state that a 16/17 year old can achieve their nptc qualifications but then must be supervised at all times until they are 18 years old.

We have co-funding available for a 19yrs+ apprenticeship in the Devon/Cornwall area if anyone is interested. Training is flexible and takes place in and around West Devon and East Cornwall. The sign up would need to be before the 1st of May as new funding rules apply from this date (employer levy etc) If you have 50 employees or less then you can apply for a £1500 AGE grant to help with costs. Get in Touch ASAP if you are interested - 01822 832232.

  10. Lynher Training based on the Devon/Cornwall border is running a 2 day course on January 17th and 18th. Installation and Maintenance of support systems in Trees. It is an NPTC IA (integrated assessment). The price is £395 including NPTC assessments. No VAT. Still 2 places available. Contact us at [email protected], or phone on 01822 832232.

Please note this is a 2 day course for people with some experience in bracing and propping systems, and/or qualifications such as ISA cert tech, NA Arb covering bracing, or similar.

  11. As a training provider who isn't part of a college we offer a more flexible approach to apprenticeships. Our apprentices don't need to attend every week or fortnight but they do have regular review visits. You should be able to apply for an AGE grant for £1500 to help towards paying your apprentice during training (not on Teabags). It may be worth you contacting your local funding agency to see if there are any non-college providers near you to help with flexibility.

  12. Hi All,

We offer the Lantra 1 day Basic Tree Inspection and the Lantra 3 day Professional Tree Inspection (next PTI running 2-4th November) . We also offer a 3 day Understanding Tree Surveys and Inspection course which sits in between the two. Its part of the City and Guild Level 3 in Forestry and Arboriculture Qualification and on completion achieves a City and Guilds Unit Certificate. This qualification unit can be used as refresher training and it can also become part of a full Level 3 qualification by studying other units such as Tree Pests & Diseases and Tree Science. So there are options out there for refresher training and further training if desired.

  13. Hi Amberleaf,

    Do check out our packages:

ELCAS Service Leaver Packages | Lynher Training

Candidates come from all over the uk to train and we can work out a schedule to suit you.

Regarding Kingswood, they no longer appear on the ELCAs website so do double check that they are approved to supply your training.

Dave and Kevin - Thanks for the recommendation. You were both excellent students.

    Kind Regards,

    Lynher Training
