Blimey prices have come down a lot then, sounds a great deal. I use OTISS and a sony xperia tablet, sold as waterproof but I use it in a case anyway. I wouldn't get carried away with gps performance figures, if you use aerials as base mapping you can correct easily. Remember the bulk of Trimble and others products are developed for the survey market, which has far higher requirements than we need to produce an accurate tree survey plan.

  2. Not as far as I know, but arcpad costs ~£500 a license I think, and plenty of android software will do the same thing for much less. Are you being provided with survey software written for arcpad, or just want to edit shp files in the field?

  3. Hi

thanks for the advice, I dint realise there not waterproof. could be a problem.

think arcpad will work ok on it.

    many thanks

Used arcpad on a juno a lot years ago, and worked well, but as already said don't expect great things from gps accuracy. Didn't have a problem with bad weather, survived many arb surveys and a fair bit of forestry work, which was often pretty soggy!

Unless you're already tied in to esri products I'd look at android devices, will likely do all you need for a lot less.

  4. Try a company called sattrak. They come to site to fit. Bear in mind that any wired in tracker is easily ripped out. I have a small wireless magnetic device that just needs a recharge once a month, no monthly fees, and uses a mobile sim. It can be hidden anywhere.

Which one do you use Dan? I tried one that sounds like yours but the battery life was only a couple óf days.

  5. Flicking through a copy of the posh hunting magazine 'The Field' last week, I came across this letter from a reader claiming he had 'cured' his Ash from Ash dieback!

I suspect that perhaps the tree didn't actually have Chalara dieback but it did make me wonder if anyone else had heard of any successful treatments.

This short report on which fungicides were successful via foliar treatment may interest you Paul if you've not seen it, hopefully there will be similar success with the stem injection trials.

  6. Came across this tree in a plantation-strange discoloration on bark.

    Is this chalara?

Lumberlover, may well be a target type canker caused by phytophthora either with or without the presence of chalara. Definitely contact FC plant health as David suggests, as depending on your location you may have only the second incidence in the country of this.

  7. I have a couple of chinese ebay specials that have been better than expected, but no guarantee they won't go up in smoke tomorrow. Watch where you charge them, but they have been good enough to forward by/work at night with, and are miles cheaper than petzl etc, which seem not to last long anyway.
