I've noticed during my internet trawling of anything remotely connected to burning wood/logs, there's quite a lot of reference to collecting/having access to free wood.... I just wondered where they stand legally, if anyone knows that is... I know collecting on private land obviously requires land owners permission but ...is it legal to collect from a council owned wood on common land? I'm only thinking of fallen branches etc....I'm not contemplating taking a chainsaw to a 100 year old oak tree or anything remotely similar....

I am a domestic buyer (for my Rayburn) so no expert. I have been looking on ebay at £60 per meter cubed of chopped logs. They only say dry/seasoned not how dry in terms of moisture content reading. I don't know whether to trust ebay as they look like amateurs and it could all be softwood. If I were to buy from a reputable local source/company who sell it regularly I know they charge £80 (last year) per meter cubed of chopped logs. - Delivered. Obviously I try not to buy and always on the lookout for free stuff even if it is just felled so that I can chop it and season it myself so that I know what I am getting. I have received a couple of meter cubed this year with Freecycle and Arbtalk so far this year.

Can you retro fit a thermal store to allow the heating to be used early mornings? We have a multifuel Rayburn and using anthracite until we get some free wood off Arbtalk. Need some near HP23 4QU please. It does all the hotwater, radiators, cooking etc in winter. In summer we use electric immersion heater for hot water or just use electric shower. How much would a thermal store cost to retrofit?

I am always on the lookout for timber in the Beds, Bucks, Herts area they want to get rid of.. I would happily come get it from you as long as it’s free/cheap. Any now or in the future please send me a pm. I am not in the industry just looking for stuff to season for my Rayburn to keep the bills down so not too fusy what I receive. Let me know if Long Marston, Tring. close enough. I would like your Hardwood timber please. Especially if you can just dump it on our drive. 4 Demi-Johns Blackberry wine. But you have to remember when it is blackberry time. Too stingy to pay for the kits. Also been told to leave it at least a year to mature so will be ready for Christmas next year.

Admittedly did also say: Cordwood won't become firewood without a lot of effort. By the time I have paid for the wood, a lorry, a decent chainsaw (not a B&Q Chinese special,) protective gear and possibly a training course, I won't have much change compared to the commercial price of wood and not only that it is mostly softwood. Plus, all sorts of wildlife like living in big woodpiles. LOL It's likely to be full of all sorts of knarly lumps that would be very difficult to split. Otherwise, you would have chunked it up and flogged it as logs or even sold it on to King Acre. There is also a fair amount of big stuff in it that you'd have a job getting through without a hydraulic splitter, and I don't mean one of those dinky little machine mart things - same goes for the chainsaw - a B&Q £80 special isn't going to deal with half of it.

What do you think to this? FIREWOOD - LOGS - APROX 200 CUBIC METRES MIXED CORDWOOD I made my polite enquiries as usual. Admittedly I am a newbie. Regardless to say I did not pursue the enquiry any further.

But it is soo frustrating when the damn things don't fit. Especially when still in yer PJ's trying to get fire going on a cold day. The last thing you want to do is go outside in the frost/snow and find a smaller bit or chop a bit off. I am more organised though now after three years. Our Rayburn is 10" by 12" so the smaller bits get stacked one way and the longer lengths go the other and if they a bit too long they get stacked diagonally otherwise they get put to one side to be chopped up.

What and where would you hire (on a car licence) to pick up the odd few tonnes of firewood? I don’t want to keep on overloading our VW transporter. Or even better who would you hire to get the job done? What’s the most cost effective way? I am in Tring.
