Cheers, thats kind of what I thought. The benefit I suppose is a greater surface area to dry?....will have a go today

Hi all, I've cleared a good area in the field next to my house, and I've acquired a decent amount of larch, spruce and pine for next years season. Now that I've got space, and a lot of wood, I'd like to have a go at making billet stacks...I've never made billets before, whats the best way?

My English Mastiff can smell a ***** van at 100m.....and goes mental. Not a pretty sight.

I'm pretty ruthless- if there's a pain in the arse who moans about perfectly good logs, I won't deal with them again. Its funny as f**k when the moaner phones up wanting more logs, and I tell them that I won't supply them!

i picked a flexi one for nownt the other day, so you think a cowl is pointless? i hope so as spending money is a pain
No need for all that cowl stuff as far as I can see. When it rains most, we are using the stove so the rain doesn't present a problem. When the stove's off, as it were, only the heaviest rain might run down the chimney- bear in mind the size of the chimney aperture is relatively small, and, if it's raining, you normally crack the stove on, even just for the purposes of cheerfullness, which also negates the rain issue.....
-
Fixed mine over the old chimney pot. Haven't got a cover on it, and given that we live in Argyll, where, occasionally it rains a wee bit, no problems. To be fair, stoves on 24/7 from sept to apr. We had the same set up when we lived in another similar property, again with no dramas!!

Ps Mine is a multifuel and I burn coal, logs, peat etc, as per Graham if its just wood you are going to burn a lighter liner will do. I did mine in a weekend. Including hearth and all the fannying around with roofs and liners etc

Are half-size barrow bags available? Might be a better bet when my current ones fall apart (glad i'm not lifting them into a landrover/pickup though it has to be said).
Think there's ones half the size with wee handles at each corner. Hefting about 50k's no worries compared to the Big Uns. Can't remember where I saw them though, will look

Check these folks out: Wood Burning Stoves, Woodburning Stove, Multifuel Stoves UK
I put one in our old cottage last year (had an open fire before) and used the heaviset grade, I think its 960? No problems

"these logs must be old rubbish because they're bone dry"........

Mine hold about 90Kg, and I've been humping them on and off a Landy 110 and latterly a trailer- I find them a total pain in the arse, just too heavy to handle comfortably, just too awkward a shape to make manual loading easy. Not doing 'em now after the present stock of bags is used up, will go down a size and use ones about half the size.

I'm 41! No problems.......

Interesting, this. My woodshed here in North Argyll faces the prevailing wind (SW, which is frequently strong), and is made of pallets....It gets a good blow straight across the front of the pile regularly, and since building the store facing the wind, I've noticed that my wettest timber dries significantly quicker. The store is fully vented, via pallets, but has a solid roof, finished with roof felt to keep the top of the stack dry, the floor is also made of pallets.....

Spruce and larch in the woodburner, no dramas. Am mixing it with a wee bit of oak for longevity....

Hardwood, any type, wanted. North Argyll, Scotland.
Thanks,
JOHN

Yes, thanks again. I am an fan of old saws, the new 660 I've got doesn't run worth a Funkeys Muck sometimes.....
-
Thanks Spud, in fact I'm just back in from taking the old beast to bits, and I found a hard lump of sawdust in the wee hole behind the bar...after I poked it out with a screwdriver and fired her up, the oil started running nicely! Brilliant! I thought it might have been something terminal! I love the 041!!
-
I've got an old Stihl 041 AV- run it on a 20" bar and it starts and cuts great. I'm wondering about the oiler though, in as much as I don't think its putting out as much as it should. Can anyone tell me what I should observe if I run it without the bar and chain on, where should the oil be coming from ? Think it might be blocked behind the bar.....

Have found out that there is quite a bit of help going particularly business start up from argyll and bute council! Am looking at the various EU initiaitives to see whats going!
-
Thanks form the replies folks, I've had a look and I think there's definately potential for grants, in fact I've found an organisation up here that promote renewable energy who are willing to help....!! Happy days
-

As a small firewood business just starting out, I wondered if anyone knows anything about EU grants or if the Forestry Comm have any assistances available for firewood businesses. It strikes me that there should surely be some sort of EU assistance available for renewables?
