  1. From my experience of work travel I don’t know how a freelance climber makes any money. After my b&b or travelodge, fuel and grub I walk away with x, I try as best I can to factor in travel and food but I can’t always get it right when quoting. If you’re a freelance climber you’re getting £150 a day, so after all expenses you go home with what, maybe 60 to 80 quid, this industry is struggling for climbers for a reason.

  2. Top of North Yorkshire

Unfortunately you just to far out my reach, unless you have multiday jobs then I can justify it.

I seem to be getting more work north of London than in Kent, I have no idea what’s going on with the tree industry in Kent but that’s what I’m experiencing.
  3. Hello chaps and chapettes,

I’ve got a few days available if anyone if interested in hiring us out for a day or two.

  4. Brave man stepping into this den. I think you'll find the majority of people here look at it as "I cut it, I get paid".

I'd like to add it's not down to the company doing the work, the problem lies with the council. If the company in the video didn't take the contract another company would have.

  5. When will be a good time? It is never going to be a good thing but it will happen.

Im not sure why people choose a forum primarily used by Tree surgeons to try and get justification on stopping people taking trees down.

It is a perfect oxymoron if ever I have seen one.

I'm not trying to stop anyone, I just support the stopping of felling these specific trees in this specific case, or alternatively a planned Fell with a planting plan over many years.

So any arborist who doesn't feel the need to Fell everything in side should find a different platform? Interesting.
  6. Great ain’t it, price to  remove a tree >1500cm girth

    Highway location requiring TM?
    Ivy?
    Power Lines?
    Telephone lines?
    Immovable targets?
    Access?
    Decay- requires Mewp?
    Mewp Access?

Just provide a cost based on girth!

No wonder, I think, most overprice

This is for surveys, but the tender is for multiple sites, however they've neglected to say where and how many exactly! If it's not many sites then the contract could be a good one, if it's many ranging all over the uk then it will be a waste of time.
  7. You see, this is half the problem.  The protestors, like you, think that they are right and that's that.

In this case Gary what's the justification? The council ignored the residents of the street, you have to admit that losing an avenue of mature trees in a time when planting trees by councils is at an all time low is really not a good thing.
  8. But it's not about that specific tree, the guy in question said he did it because he knew as long as the crew were wrapped up dealing with him then no other tree would come down. The residents protested the trees coming down legally in multiple meetings and a fat cat in the council went ahead and drew up a nice contract to have the work done anyway. If this is what must be done to save these trees then so be it. At what point do we stop cutting g down mature trees in this country? Especially ones that are decent avenue trees like these.

  9. When I first saw this story I went to get the full picture unlike the majority on this thread throwing around comments.
I found out who the protester was and exactly why he did it. This group of residents are trying to prevent the trees in this street from being cut down by the council. The guy in question was holding on to the brash because it stopped the crew from working thereby stopping the trees from coming down. As was stated earlier these trees are a monument to ww1 soldiers who didn't come home.
These trees should not be coming down! End of.

  10. Good on the protesters (that wasn’t easy to say), the fact these trees are marked for removal is ridiculous. If we don’t get a grip on removing mature trees we’re going to find ourselves in a bad position tree wise in the not to distant future. These trees are monuments to our fallen too.

  11. I don’t see how you can tender if you don’t have the specs.
You need to know exactly what they want and when it needs doing by.
When you know that you can price for it.
Then breakdowns of of everything that will be done and importantly anything that would not be inclusive in the price and need to be agreed separately.
    Include insurances qualifications etc

I've sent off all my requests for detailed info and now I wait.
