  1. I saw it at APF too. Just thought it looked cumbersome and a prime candidate for getting bent / snapped off. Can't say I'd be keen on buying one.
  2. Ah, ok. Looks like a really useful unit - like it a lot!
  3. That's a great little piece of kit! Yours or hired in?? What sort of price to buy??
  4. Brilliant! Free to all 'expert' customers.... "Warning - Don't tell me how to do my job" T-Shirts & Hoodies by PuppaBear27 | Redbubble
  5. Typical! Probably thought you'd been sitting at home just waiting for their call! I haven't progressed the RB project yet ):0(
  6. Pull your finger out or get yr cards? Would that qualify as an incentive scheme?
  7. Great pics start to finish in this thread!
  8. Spot-on! And I agree with Darrin's suggestion of "giving some jobs away", but only to people you know /trust and maybe one day when they're flat out and you're quiet they'll pass you a job or 2 back. It's worked for me before!
  9. It may seem counter intuitive Matty, but sometimes you have to say "No" or at the very least, give the customer a long lead time before being available to start (caveated with - if you want quality, it takes time, if you want quick & cheap you'll have to live with the consequences) I find most customers have been "thinking" about getting that work done for years, they call and want a quote immediately, take 6 months to consider the price, then call today and want the job done tomorrow! I tend to say, take as long as you need to consider the work spec / quote, but phone as soon as you can and we'll put it in the diary. Once it's in the diary it's fixed but be prepared for a 1-3.month lead time from confirmation call to start date. I lost several jobs between Jan-Mar because I simply couldn't get back to them in good time. Sure it feels bad but what's the alternative - drive yourself into the ground or take on more staff - I don't want to do either at the moment.
  10. The nuts are apparently great for eating. Hugh Fernly Whatnot did a cookery show featuring them - better than toasted pine nuts apparently. Looking forward to an opportunity to try em one day.
  11. A fairly wild sweeping generalisation but I guess it's always somebody else's fault when a business fails through failing to adapt & evolve. I don't mean to have a poke, but as somebody that has come into the trade as a "second career" I can assure you it's not a hobby (although it is a lifestyle choice.) I've invested considerable time, training & money into my second career, I love my work, never been happier on a personal level but it's unlikely my quotes undercut others, quite the opposite in fact, I select my potential customers carefully and don't mess around with customers that quibble or haggle over a few squid, not worth my time or energy. Just a suggestion, but based on personal experience, the "second career" brigade you suggest are undercutting the old boys, probably have a minimum price per day they can even be bothered to leave the house for, based on previous salary, so I wouldn't have thought that's a realistic cause for the downfall of long standing outfits.
  12. Link works Robbie. Good link, if I understand it correctly, it's grant funding for farms that dictates no laying between 1 Mar - 31 Jul and the countryside wildlife act that requires no "intentional" disturbance of nesting feathered friends. So domestic or non stewardship subsidised farms (otherwise known as hens teeth) would be ok.
  13. The answer to that question is in the detail of the great post above. It's all down to ease or difficulty of extraction, accessibility, road transport etc. If there was real "return" on the investment it would either already have been extracted and the value realised, or it wouldn't be for sale because there is potential for return when the trees mature.
  14. Totally agree! I even laugh at crap jobs I haven't quoted for!!
  15. Speedos for grass cutting??? A horrifying thought! Reading the thread with a tangential interest in the date to stop laying debate. I wouldn't know anything about regional societies or associations rules or guidelines on the date to stop but would expect they'd be based on the premise that nesting birds etc shouldn't be disturbed (and timber reactions at different times of the year.) It would only be an offence under wildlife & countryside act if nests were intentionally disturbed: http://www.legislation.gov.uk/ukpga/1981/69 I had to explain to a customer that there isn't a "closed season" for tree felling due to nesting birds but that a survey, and if clear, carry on.
  16. Spot on! And totally agree with "woodyguy" post#20 as well!
  17. Always pleased to see them back, not seen yet but won't be long!!
  18. If it feels right, it probably is right, if it feels wrong it probably is wrong! Trust your instincts, that's what keeps us alive.
  19. Been across the Tamar 3 times this week! That's my yearly allowance used up in 1 week!
  20. Campbeltown! That's a hike to get to wherever you are travelling from!
  21. Let me know if you find a Loler course, fancy that myself!
  22. I shouldn't worry too much old chap, it'll only prematurely age you. But to reinforce the comment I made above, here is a definitive description of the difference between the British Standard (that which I referred to) and the CE mark: http://www.bsieducation.org/Education/about/what-kitemark.shtml Hope that clears up any confusion you may have? I've no comment to make on the BSEN you have referred to, I'm not familiar with it. Have a look at the link and see if you find enlightenment!
  23. If you speak to Allen, mention I passed you on their link. They've got some good courses / instructors so hope it works out for you. Might even see you there one day!
