  1. Anyone have any recommendations / contacts for a short break (1 week) stay in Staffordshire Moorlands?? Wife has found a couple of options but thought I'd see if any of you guys have chalets / log cabins etc that are available for hollibobs???
  2. Much better to talk about it rather than lock it away in my opinion. I once had it explained that it's like just keep pushing another box / bag of stuff into that cupboard under the stairs so that you don't have to deal with it today. It's all still there, it's not been sorted, but the pile just keeps getting bigger until one day the cupboard is full and it all comes tumbling out. Then you're faced with a bigger pile of stuff to sort out. Keep talking!!
  3. That sounds like really hard graft for not a great return (after tax, fuel/oil, wear&tear on saws etc.) must have been less than £100/day for what sounds like a grueller!?!
  4. Just a thought, because I'm faced with a loosely similar situation... What was the date the TPO was initiated and has it been reviewed since implementation? Would the tree in its current status / form warrant a TPO today? I'm working on some >100yo Mont Pine, group TPO initiated in the 60's. Little if any active "management" of dead / hanging limbs on record since TPO in 60's, several trees terminally damaged and TPO approval gained to fell. I informally asked TO if a reevaluation of appropriateness of sustaining the TPO might be an option. Response was loosely along the lines that there are insufficient resources to review existing TPOs.
  5. Hubble space telescope! We're all DOOMED!
  6. Could you describe part or all of the rationale for the objection?? Does the land owner want to develop or do they not "like" the tree or is there a perceived risk from it? Not directly related to the original question about public view but might help (me) to understand the "why" of the appeal / objection. No worries if you think that would be indiscreet or inappropriate.
  7. It's thought provoking! Does the tree have to be seen from a (technically defined) public open space or does the view of the tree by many residents of "private" spaces make it a public view to be enjoyed for its amenity???
  8. There's some great debate in the "valuation of amenity trees" thread from back in Jan this year. I'd be interested to know a bit more of the background to your question. For example are you looking to challenge the imposition of a TPO, perhaps on the basis that the tree is not visible from a certain place??
  9. Had a cash advance of 2k to cover travel costs in advance in a previous job (we did a lot of travelling), I bunged it into PB and have had a reasonable tickle every now and again. Nothing significant, but it's a real pleasure when a cheque drops in the mail - it's money I wasn't expecting so it's nice to do a slap up dinner or the like. One think not mentioned so far, watch your upper limits in a bank account, I think it's 80k government sponsored guarantee return of your money if the bank goes bust (that really isn't as far fetched as it might seem) on a sole account, it's higher on a joint account. I've been meaning to dump some cash into PBs, I just like the thought of not letting the greedy, shiny assed traders making investments with my money!
  10. I (think) I get the frustration you're expressing (if I read it right from your text) I too used to get frustrated by losing a job (esp if it's to a clown or a job that I really fancied.) But, with time, I've come to realise that it's actually the customer that is responsible for choosing the outfit that will do their work. If the customer is ignorant or disinterested in standards or focussed solely on price, the reality is, I don't actually want to do their work and so everyone gets want they want in the end! Let them pay cheap and get shat on while you have a beer and think about the next job!
  11. It's a tricky situation. The forum rules don't allow "naming & shaming" but if there is a consensus of opinion, how can anything change/be changed?? Footnote: I actually have no idea which institution appears to be alluded to!!
  12. There might just be something in that old saying "once bitten, twice shy" maybe he didn't know that one??? Muppet!
  13. Sounds like you may have encountered some, maybe less scrupulous, organisations are creaming the funding and failing the students, the industry and the tax payer!
  14. Dammit! Just read yours and roared! She asked what I was laughing at..... Why didn't I just say 'a joke' instead of telling her the truth??? Think I may have instigated another 2 hours of stern silence...... (Ha, bliss!)
  15. Totally agree! I don't have mud eating tyres mind, but couldn't get up this with empty trailer this morning after last night rain. (I know the hard core 4x4ers will slate me for that!) but, to be fair (and I know you won't be!) the pics don't show the gradient or the mud bath in front of the stables and the thought of trying to get out with a load on was a non starter! Dry, I'd have a Riko fast tow on this job in a flash!
  16. Great vid!! I wouldn't say I was a fan of any one over any other.... I want them all! Was watching the vid and wifey looking over my shoulder, she kept saying "is something exciting going to happen?" I just gave her the 'are we watching different videos?' look. She was not impressed but it wasn't as bad as last week when she was telling me about some sad-sack at her work. My response "don't go into too much detail, I'm not really interested" really didn't go down well. I only meant to think it, but it came out loud, that keeps happening!
  17. I think there may be an element of chest beating and bluster from Union boss trying to maintain his profile too. There are certainly inherent hazards associated with construction, just as there are many other sectors: sat diving, explosives, farming, fishing, tree work, window cleaning, steeple jack the list is endless! Our builder fell off the roof - but that was because he was an old fashioned man who was using unsafe practices - the accident was inevitable! I think it's a poorly conceived and unsubstantiated article (other than the actual number of deaths) but if it causes a focus of attention maybe people will buck up?? Talk about shining the spotlight on yourself! HSE will just add more scrutiny to the building trade if their own union is making statements like that.
  18. Construction is the most dangerous industry in the UK, 32 per cent of all workplace deaths occurred in the construction industry in 2013/14. - See more at: South West construction deaths remain too high | UCATT Are more deaths in any particular industry sector really an indicator of the 'dangers' associated with that sector or are they actually an indicator of poor practice, lack of adequate training, carelessness and ignorance?
  19. 2 options I can think of: 1 keep a very low profile, stay under the radar and if caught out / grassed up, claim it's for personal use as you're a hoarder / prepper! 2 (and if you've already talked to VO) fess up and take it on the chin. There are business rates (maybe rebate able??) potentially VAT, liability and 'contents' / stock insurance all to consider. It's a world of admin / cost for limited return IMHO. Good luck!
