No it's a separate one that holds category's called ME's these cover everything from hitched trailer, 3 point linkage ploughs front loaders, front linkage, pto machines, anything that get bolted to a tractor in one way or another. Wounded if anyone knew if this would cover an agri mog that is agri reg, as I can pull a load of upto 34t on it with tractors that are agri. So mogs have to Come under the same licence as there agri? I know not a lot of people know the me category as I have asked people before about them and they knew nothing. Would get hold of dvla and ask them as they issue them but don't want to knacker it for anyone else doing it?????

What about a tractor licence, I have tractor trailer, god knows how many ME category's on it.

No I call telling some not to put 12 volts across a solenoid simple. If he puts the wrong wire on he will most certainly blow the wiring causing fire etc plus blown fuses. No way I'm getting the blame for that train wreck? Plus it's simple for me I can understand it with ease. It's the correct way to test the system.

Well I thought he was as trying to explain things in simple terms so he doesn't go wrong gets you slated on this forum?

Little bit of a high jack here. If a mog is on agri can this be driven on tractor license or not? Do you still need the license for it?

Disconnect BOTH battery terminals IGN ON all the time. Measure between white wire tag and RED + Battery LEAD terminal, not the battery + post. It may help if I say that on a RESISTANCE scale, your meter acts like a tiny BATTERY, and sends a very small voltage out of one of its test leads - usually the red one goes positive. Let's say you clamp this red lead to the detached RED battery-cable terminal. There OUGHT to be a clear LOW RESISTANCE connection all the way to the white lead tag IF the IGN is ON. This path goes through the IGN switch or a relay. IF, BUT ONLY IF, a continous circuit exists, some of that voltage will reach the other end of the test which means the tag on the white wire to the solenoid will have some voltage on it. You now connect your black test lead to that tag, and the meter can work out the RESISTANCE because it now knows what the voltage drop is in the "circuit". It's OHMS LAW at its best. V = I times R .............. or to put it another way ...... Volts = Amps times Resistance. R = V divided by Amps ............. or to put it another way ...... Resistance = Volts divided by Amps. If you were careful, and if you have a good meter (!!!) you could try to measure the CURRENT the white tag can pass when the battery is connected again and the IGN key is ON. It ought to be HEAPS of amps, and it SHOULD send your 10-amp meter off the scale. You will probably have a separate terminal for the RED lead of the meter to read the 10 amp scale, AND set the knob. Test this only for an INSTANT! Else you may fry your meter and blow a fuse. But, as we expect now, if there is no apparent reading, set your meter to current 200m (move the red lead back to normal place first) that's 200 milli-amps, one fifth of an amp max. Test again. You will probably get a low reading. I test you can carry out to find out if it is ignition or solenoid at fault. Depends on how mechanically minded you are.

The vehicle suits the job. If mobs work for your business then fair enough if the Landry is better fine, if a hi lux works thats fine. You run what bests suits the work you do, I'm sure if I worked in a office I would have a car of some sort.

How safe are your feet? Chainsaw boot test

This is too true, ppe is only there as a last line of defence, it is down to the operator to ensure that he or she takes all neseccery steps to avoid an accident. Bit like health and safety is only there to protect when all else fails. -
Not sure about the freelanders have heard some horror story's about them... Don't think I would choose one over anything really.
-
This is too true, if you provide him with work he will either deny it or own up and apologise, relising he has been stupid he will know that no more work will come his way.

Compression intermittent would be first sign of failing work when cold as engine heats up metal expands so cylinders expand causing gaps around rings. When engine cools cylinders shrink. It was said it happens after short drive. Then takes time to start again.

Same as gardenkit. Use a small grinder with a disc, I use a stainless steel cutting disc. Really thin. Seen the mess a blunt one can make of conifer hedges.

Didn't say the battery was 3 volts said the resistor puts out 3 volts. The battery can be what it wants to be. Some are 12 volts but not on a bigger one, sounds like you have been lucky so far with putting 12 volts onto soleniods. And you have yet to encounter the low ones. I have never seen a 12 volt in any 4x4 ii have worked on or any heavy diesel truck, lorry, or large car. Think I have seen quadruple engines over my time and also spent 5 years with college and one at a uni studying them, also keep well up to date with new specs that are being developed at the moment. Refresher courses are always taken on mechanical engineering. Somehow I seem to know what I'm talking about. Dartmoor this is an open forum and you can take whatever advise you deem fit. I am not in the mood to argue with anyone over an engine I will never see or fix. It is in your hands what you do to it. All I can point out is when someone gives wrong advise in checking a fault and reply with the correct way to find a fault without destroying something that could cost money to replace without the need to do so in the first place.
-
The voltage is a range of 2 to 3 volts depending on how the resistor works. Seeing as if it was a straight 12 volts the engine would not start if the battery has less than 12 volts or if the alternator was to defect while driving that battery would soon drain of 12 volts killing the engine as it would not have enough power to keep gate open and allow fuel through. Hence why it is a range voltage it would not go above 3. To "jiggle" the wiring loom would be inefficient as the gate or plung valve would still not open if it is worn and sticking. I think to use terminology as jiggle to someone when you are trying to give them sound advise on a technical matter is un professional and if I was to give a customer to whome vehicle I am fixing with advice of ' yeah try jiggling it mate see if that helps' they would soon leave my workshop and not return. Just the way i see it. Again as I have said if the solenoid was at fault you would get an intermittent non start and after a few tries it will fire up, this would not happen on travel as once the valve is open it stays open until power is switched off. If it was a loose connection on the wiring then no amount of "jiggling" the wires will recreate it so it could be a waste of a frustrating hour.

Spot on. Hand prime. If air coming through then yes pipe broken or connection loose. If no air move on to the pump and open the bleed screw on and look for fuel, if air on this part then look on pipes from hand primer to pump. If nothing that side crack off the injector pipes a bit and turn over with key, if fuel here all is fine, but remember that if it stop solenoid it would be intermittent so you would have to wait until it does it then check the injector pipes when it stops to see if fuel coming through if no fuel it's the solenoid if fuel could have missed something either on the pump or the pipes.
-
Agree is it really him or is he trying to be a big mouth....
-
Do NOT do this..... The feed is not 12 volt it is 2 maybe 3 volts. Put 12 volts across it and you will fry the solenoid. Then you will be paying for another one, use a voltage tester on it first to make sure there is power going to it.
-
Yeah sounds like it. Again go for a fault finding excercise and start at the filter. I would change th efilter again as I service all vehicles very 6 months, oil, filter and fuel filter. Again go for the hand pump and place fuel pipe into a clear container or bottle and pump through fuel looking for air bubbles as you go. Seeing as it stops after a run and takes its time to fire up again I would say there is a slow blockage and the fuel is taking its time to fill pump back up. It might do it once in a trip or it could do it a couple of times. Try and get your head away from electrics the only electrics are going to maybe be a stop solenoid on the pump, this fault would be diagnosed by the engine failing to start at all or stop. It could only be fuel at this stage without testing the system out or the compression when the engine is hot.
-
Not sure about cut off. I don't think so and have never come across one. Diesel engines only need two things to make them run fuel and compression so it can only be one of these things. Try the compression on hot engine easy to do with a tester and takes 5 mins. Once that is done and it comes up ok it's only a fuel issue. Again start from the tank and work forward throu the system, if I was near you I would have a look for you. When was the filter last changed?
-
Too late the words have been written. I don't like hilux but I agree they are good trucks. Mogs are good if they are set up right, always wanted the cherry picker one with the huge winch on the front. Landys I like and would always have one, there bad name comes from the old ones but for vehicles over 50 years old that are still on road I can't disagree, like to see a modern car still going in 50 years time.
-
Fuel issue, filter, pump, stop solenoid could have had it. Carry a spanner that fits the injector in pipes union when it does it again undo the fuel pipe and turn over if no fuel fuel problem. You will have to fault find from there, start at the tank and work through to injectors.

Are you putting quotes together tonight?
Rich2484 replied to button1803's topic in Business Management
Was thinking about the verbal quotes been said. Surely they would only except the quote there and then if they have already had quotes and yours was the cheapest. Or they don't care about money and anyone will do. Or you have been recommended so they except the quote purely on recommendation. Just thinking out loud -
Enough on the titanic, what about the lancastria

Well of course it won't, it was during our defeat. No country likes to make programmes about there defeat. -
Sorry cant help you out with this one but i did think it was going to be about swimming in northants tho. Lol
