  1. Anyone know how the rope wrench performs in serious minus temperatures, ice and snow?? Does it affect its ability to share the friction with the hitch?

I will tell you after Christmas as I'm gonna buy a load of sshiny new bits for myself as treat

  2. Thanks buddy your a star.

What parts of the tree are better than the uk and what bits are worse

How did you sort out Visa's and accommodation

Do many people speak english out there

How did you get your foot in the door out there

Ill think of more :sneaky2: I know some of the questions may be different for different firms but its a start for me to built knowledge

    thanks again

Like u say it completely depends what firms your with. I'm with a really good one fortunately. U have to be careful which one u go with . Heard the Swedish companies take this pics with the English. Best to go with a Swedish company but owed and run by English. I got the job off arb jobs. Was quite fortunate as a lot applied for it  there are companies on there at the min advertising for English climbers.

The winter now and it's really harsh. If u read the post "frozen ropes" on here u will get an idea of the weather ect. That was my friend that made it who I work with.

Tree wise it's nearly same as home just bigger. Depends which part of Sweden u go to but im in the middle ish so there is a lot of spruce, pines, massive birch, oak, aspens.....not that many ash as most of them have had it. Big elms but same as ash there nearly all out as well. Good thing is I haven't climbed a single tree yet with ivy on. Nice and clean. All we actually do is climb, very really have to clean up. Do a lot of council work so they clear it up. Haven't fed a chipped for over 5 months now

If you do end up comin out get a good comfy pair of spikes u will use them a lot.

Regarding if they speak English the answer is yes and very well. We can have full conversations with like 8 year old's. It's taught in school here so they are very good and they like to speak it. The older they are the less English they speak but you can get by very easy.

I completely love it here climbing compared to England just coz the trees are bigger and better. Plus it's just so much more relaxed. Haven't got your boss breathing down your neck to get the job done asap coz he's under quoted it 0to beat other companies. ( does depend on company but think they are all chilled to be honest ).As there ain't really that much compitition in companies coz each one is so far apart.

It's a really good experience and looks good on your cv :sneaky2:

Hope this helps a little more

  3. I thought most accommodations in Sweden had a "Torkskåp" that would not only allow you to dry your clothes, but also all your ropes and gear overnight - and leave it nice and warm. It operates with forced airflow with moderate temperatures (20 - 40 C).

I built one myself using an old metal locker with a hole cut in the base and top, and a small industrial heater placed on top forcing warm air (thermostat) through top-to-bottom. Dries everything (boots, clothes, ropes, the lot) within an hour or two much more gently than a tumble drier.

Most of use are subbies out here but get our digs paid for. This means hostels, hotels and anything else which is cheap. Would be nice for some where like that to dry rope instead of stinking my room out on the radiator ha

  4. Hey mate....I have one, had it about 11 months now. Absolutely love it . The fits perfect to your head. It's light and when you move your head it stays in position unlike the old petzl vertex I had. Admittedly it's a tad more sweaty in the summer months but the good thing is u can take the padding out and stick it in the wash instead of having to buy new hygiene kit . My friend has the new petzl and he really rates that. I would definitely give the thumbs up to getting one but this is only my opinion. Hope this helps

  5. I am aiming to get abroad after I have got my 5 years experience or when i feel like i am in a good postion is go abroad.

Been talking and looking into NZ and Oz, but havent given colder countries a thought.

What would you like to know mate about Sweden. Currently working here and have been for a while now. Could more and likely answer most questions or give it my best shot. :001_smile:

  6. -13 this morning. Bout to try my sj out as vt didn't work yesterday. Rope is warm but how long I don't know haha look on arb jobs mate there is few on the at the min. Most English climbers go home for winter I think. Were still here braving it out

  7. I will have a completely dry and warm rope tomorrow, I will let u know how long it lasts. Temp is gonna be around -11 so I'm guessing maybe a hour max then back to square 1. Having tantrums up the tree and asking myself y I'm actually here ha

  8. MIKELAWN - Your a Grimsby lad? You know Ben Winson of Clee Tree Services? Or any of the lads from Greencuts? How long you been in Sweden?

Yeah from Grimsby. I know Ben well, I do work for him when I go home from Sweden. And I worked for green cuts for a short while. If u know green cuts u will know why it was a short while. AA approved?? Pppfftt lifting council lime trees with pole saws is there speciality there. Didn't want my name associated with them so I left.

    What's your name?

  9. Winters are great fun over there! Wait til your revving the nuts out of ya top-handle saw with the exhaust pointing onto your VT to thaw it out, just so you can move! Two pairs of gloves on trying to open frozen biners, Not being able to feel your limbs all day! Oh how i miss it!

Ropes need thawing out and drying overnight! I left mine in the truck overnight a few times, frozen solid the next morning in all sorts of interesting shapes! It came out the rope bag in one solid LUMP!!

Funny you say that, I left mine in the van last nite. Tried climbing with it 2day and it really wasn't playing. Even had a tantrum up the tree....u know the sort or tantrum u had when u first started and couldn't do something or get out some where haha

  10. Nz Paul where abouts Sweden u working? We are around orebro area a lot. Doing commercial, rail and private. Getting cold now. Ropes are doing our nuts in. Vt is just unusable. Gonna take my rope to bed and warm it up and try my spider jack.

  11. Mike, Honey brothers were knocking up something identical at the APF. I think Sid made it up on the day so its probably not on the website yet. I'm sure if you call and ask them for a stiffy they'll oblige :sneaky2:
