1. A wise arborist once told me to always double your original estimate when working with 'maccys'
2. Cheers Scott, was in two minds about including the spinning shot, but decided to use it as it was just a different camera angle (attached to the lowering line directly). The access was awful, so it took a week to complete the work and extract all the brash and timber. The winds gusting up to 35 knots didn't help... Great fun though, and our biggest dismantling job to date. http://www.coastaltreecare.co.uk
3. Hi all, and Happy New Year! I have to admit to being an infrequent contributor but like to dip in and out to keep up with what's going on out there. I'm based in Weymouth, Dorset and have just taken my first tentative steps into video Having been inspired by August and several others, I've recently joined the GoPro club, and have just posted my first arb video on YouTube. I know it's not up to the high standard you can find elsewhere, but maybe in time, who knows... I hope you enjoy it! Dale Coastal Tree Care [ame= ] [/ame]
4. Evening all. I have managed to 'lose' a large red silver bull rigging kit bag stuffed with shiny new things! Gutted doesn't cover it. It went missing early this afternoon in the Lanehouse area of Weymouth at a domestic felling/clearance job. I have reported the incident to the police but they have had no such items handed in - surprise, surprise. All kit is virtually brand new and mostly unused - 60m teufelberger yellow bull rope 16mm Portawrap III Orange whoopie sling Three steel DMM carabiners Three DMM bat rigging plates Six assorted slings in various colours and weight classes Reward offered for the safe return of my hard-won new kit.
5. Good point, but have a couple of grand to spend (end of year etc) and thought it might be worth buying IF it was any good. I appreciate that you get what you pay for :-)
6. I'm looking to get an inexpensive stump grinder as I don't have many clients asking for the service currently. Does anyone run the Lumag BSF15, and if so, how does it perform? Cheers Dale
7. Sorry but images do not appear to have loaded. I tried uploading direct from my iPhone - help?!
8. I came across this semi-mature ash yesterday. It has cavities and vertical cracks up through the east and west sides, extending at least 10cm into the crown. No evidence of fruiting bodies currently, but clearly some fungal pathogen(s) have been feasting over recent years. Possibly bacterial canker + Nectria sp.? There are a number of small dead limbs in the crown, but superficially the rest of the canopy and foliage appears healthy. I did not see the tree prior to the storm on Monday, but there is no evidence of fresh cracks in the stem or buckling. The tree is right next to an office building and overhangs power lines on the east and south sides, so the question is - does it need to be removed, or is there a case for retention and regular inspection? Thanks in advance for your comments
9. Hi. Which clinometer app do you use? Cheers Dale
10. Hi Nick I received a copy three weeks ago. Dale
11. Evening all. As an aspiring professional arborist I'm weighing up membership of the Arb Association and the ISA. I have a fledgling business picking up private jobs, and am keen to slowly expand into more corporate work. I understand the apparent benefits of approved contractor status, but wonder whether it would be worth pursuing membership of both organisations, particularly in respect of CPD and securing larger contracts. Any advice based upon your experience would be gratefully received Dale
12. Thanks for the warning Spud. As it happens, the problem revealed itself to me when, armed with a printed sheet with your sage words of advice, I removed the saw's top cover... ...to find that the rubber cap was not attached to the top of the spark plug. I had obviously failed to properly secure it when I had last checked in there. I pushed the cap back on (properly) and it started first time! Thanks for the advice though - I've put it with my manual to be of future use. Cheers Dale
13. Cheers for the advice spud - I'll follow your advice and post the results! As a newbie I'm a bit apprehensive about the 1" flame bit around petrol!!!
14. There's no difference in the sound made whether the choke is in or out... keep sending your suggestions though, everyone.
15. I use it for felling and cutting firewood, with 15 and 18 inch bars.
16. Thanks, but I think the choke is OK - the mechanism looks and feels exactly as it should...
17. Hi Haven't had any experience with many other saws, but have loved the 455, and this is the first time it has let me down in 4 years.
18. Bloody hell! hope you have a speedy recovery, and those painkillers kick in properly. Best wishes Dale
19. Hi everyone, hope you had (or are still having) a good Xmas break. I'm hoping that someone can help me to fix my Rancher, cuz I don't want to have to pay to get it fixed if I can possibly help it! My 455 won't start. When I pull the starter cord, it makes a lower-pitched sound than normal, and the decompression button pops up on virtually every pull without the engine turning over. I've checked all of the (to me) obvious things, like fuel (correct mixture), fuel filter, air filter, spark plug renewed. The bar is correctly fitted and the chain tensioned properly. Exhaust looks fine. I last used the machine a couple of weeks ago for some light de-limbing. On that occasion it started fine, but cut out after about 4 minutes, and I've not been able to start it since. Fingers crossed that someone out there will be able to help... Thanks in advance, Dale
20. Open fire with an interesting mixture of bramley apple, tibetan cherry, c. macrocarpa and elm - all seasoned for 3 years and drizabone :-)
21. Thanks for the advice - I'm booked on a course in a few weeks and want to have my own kit to use if possible. I've done some other climbing in the past so know what I'm letting myself in for, but appreciate it isn't for everyone. In particular, I'm 6'4" and over 16 stone so want to make sure that the harness is comfortable (not being built like your average tree monkey). Do you know how Sorbus and Honey's compare in terms of their ranges? Cheers Dale
22. Thanks Albere - noted. Guildford's around 2 hours by car so perfectly doable in a day! I'll check out their website beforehand, but do you know if they stock a wide range in the showroom? Hoping to make some comparisons between different items - especially harnesses...
23. Hi all, As a wannabee arborist, where's a good place to go and try out harnesses and related climbing kit before I make a load of expensive purchases? I'm in Dorset, and don't want to travelling all day if I can help it Thanks in advance Dale
